Inzaghi complimentary about Feyenoord's Champions League battle plan against Inter

Yahoo06-03-2025

Last night De Kuip bore witness to another fine evening of Champions League viewing. Although Feyenoord were eventually beaten 2-0 by the visiting Italian champions Inter, Robin van Persie's hosts picked up some kind words from Nerazzurri boss Simone Inzaghi ahead of the second decisive tie.
Making his Champions League dugout debut, Van Persie set up his Rotterdam side with a structure that proved difficult to break down. However, with fine goals either side of the interval from Marcus Thuram and Inter's record marksman in European competition, Lautaro Martinez, the hosts were eventually put to the sword.

Speaking with the Italian press after the match, the Inter boss was highly complimentary of both the atmosphere and his opponent manager's tactics.
'My team did incredibly well. It was not an easy match in this stadium. Although we are in a good position, there are always hidden dangers, so we will have to be vigilant for this Feyenoord next week as well.
'Feyenoord have a strong team. They managed to surprise us by playing with four attackers, with Igor Paixão as an advanced midfielder behind them.
'We didn't really know what to expect after Van Persie only led his first match for Feyenoord last Saturday. They played in a completely different formation and system than against AC Milan. Nevertheless, those matches helped us in preparing for this match.'
In addition to his praise, Inzaghi was careful not to underestimate the return leg on Tuesday at San Siro, citing previous the club's previous exploits at the Etihad earlier in the European campaign.
'We won the first match, but we're not there yet. We mustn't forget that Feyenoord managed to score three goals at Manchester City.'
Ahead of Tuesday night's second-leg clash, Inter will play Monza at home on Saturday. Feyenoord have no games between now and the midweek battle under the lights.

Defiant Postecoglou proud of Spurs reign despite sacking

Ange Postecoglou insisted he was proud of his turbulent Tottenham reign despite being sacked on Friday as the Australian claimed he had defied the odds by ending the club's trophy drought. Postecoglou led Tottenham to their first silverware for 17 years just 16 days ago when they beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final in Bilbao. Advertisement But securing a lucrative place in next season's Champions League by winning Tottenham's first European prize since 1984 wasn't enough to save Postecoglou. The Australian paid the price for presiding over Tottenham's 17th place finish in the Premier League, which ranked as their worst top-flight season since they were relegated in 1976-77. Despite the numerous problems that rocked Tottenham during his two-season spell, including injuries to a host of key players, Postecoglou was adamant he had relished the battle to finally deliver a trophy in difficult circumstances. "There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible," the 59-year-old said in a statement after his sacking. Advertisement "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride. "The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. "Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. "That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream." - 'We are forever connected' - Postecoglou, hired from Celtic exactly two years ago, endured months of speculation over his future as Tottenham spluttered through their dismal domestic campaign. Advertisement He had hoped Tottenham's first silverware since the 2008 League Cup would spare him from the axe. But Postecoglou returned from a family holiday in Greece to discover chairman Daniel Levy had made his ruthless move amid reports of the club's interest in Brentford boss Thomas Frank, Fulham manager Marco Silva and Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner. As his team slumped towards a woeful 22 defeats from 38 league games this term, Postecoglou clashed with Tottenham fans, who criticised his overly-attacking tactics. The Europa League triumph softened the relationship and he was serenaded on multiple occasions at the trophy parade, with players backing him to stay after a 4-1 home defeat against Brighton in what proved to be his last match. Advertisement Postecoglou, who delivered on his bold boast that he always wins a trophy in his second year, had jokingly told fans at the parade that the third season is always better than the second in television programmes, a reference to his desire to stay in charge. He won't get that opportunity, but he believes his successor will benefit from his work in north London. "We have laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them," he said. "I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. I know there were some difficult times but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special. We are forever connected." smg/mw

Advertisement Musetti has enjoyed a fine clay court season. A Monte Carlo Masters finalist, losing to Alcaraz, the Italian has found a consistency and calmness to his flowy, showy strokes. The 23-year-old has already knocked out Holger Rune and Frances Tiafoe, but was arguably lucky to still be in the tournament after kicking a ball that accidentally hit a line judge against the the American. According to the rules, he should have been defaulted, but received only a code violation. He has the game to do some damage. No player has won more tournaments in 2025 than Alcaraz, but the second-seeded Spaniard has been inconsistent in reaching the last four at Roland Garros. He dropped sets against unheralded Fabian Marozsan and Damir Dzumhur but in beating Tommy Paul for the loss of just five games in the last eight, the 22-year-old seemed to be back to his bludgeoning best. Alcaraz leads the head-to-head record 4-1, having won the past four meetings, and will start as favorite. Musetti is arguably lucky to be here after accidentally kicking a ball at a line judge in his quarter-final win over Frances Tiafoe, an offense that usually results in disqualification. He'll want to take advantage of his second chance against Alcaraz. The winner will face Jannik Sinner or Novak Djokovic in the final. Tune in to find out who it'll be. The players are making their way to Court Philippe Chatrier now, so get ready to enjoy a potential classic. Gasperini takes over from Ranieri at Roma after successful run at Atalanta

ROME (AP) — Gian Piero Gasperini was named Roma's new coach on Friday, taking over for the retiring Claudio Ranieri following his own successful run at Atalanta. 'I need a significant challenge,' Gasperini said in an interview released by Roma. 'I really believe all the conditions are in place to do good work.' Advertisement He signed a three-year deal for the club owned by Texas-based businessman Dan Friedkin. In nine seasons at Atalanta, Gasperini guided the Bergamo club to a Europa League triumph in 2024, six top-four finishes in Serie A, and a Champions League quarterfinal. The 73-year-old Ranieri was hired in November when Roma was struggling in 12th place, and his contract specified he would take on an advisor role after the season. Rainieri guided Roma to a fifth-place finish as the Giallorossi lost just once during the second half of the season, and was involved in selecting the 67-year-old Gasperini, who is known for his free-flowing attacking tactics. Roma will return to the Europa League. Advertisement Gasperini becomes Roma's fourth coach in the 1 1/2 years since Jose Mourinho was fired, following Daniele De Rossi, Ivan Juric and Ranieri. The only other time Gasperini coached a big Italian club came in 2011 when he lasted just five winless matches at Inter Milan. Gasperini had one season remaining on his contract with Atalanta but announced on Saturday in an open letter published in Bergamo's newspaper to fans that he was leaving. 'Let's not call it a goodbye,' Gasperini wrote in L'Eco di Bergamo. 'I'm ending my term at Bergamo as coach of Atalanta. But everything else will remain unchanged.' In the five seasons since American owner Friedkin took over the club, Roma's only trophy has been the 2022 Conference League. Advertisement Roma has been trying unsuccessfully to build a new stadium for more than a decade. Atalanta did not immediately announce a replacement for Gasperini, with Thiago Motta and Stefano Pioli considered the top contenders for the job. Speculation has also focused on Juric. ___ AP soccer: Andrew Dampf, The Associated Press
