Show commitment to securing AIIMS in Raichur before staging rallies
Bengaluru: Minister for Minor Irrigation and Science & Technology, N S Boseraju, has urged Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders to demonstrate their commitment to securing an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for Raichur before undertaking political rallies in the district.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday, the minister criticised the BJP-led central government for its continued inaction on granting AIIMS sta-tus to Raichur, a long-standing demand from the people of the region. He not-ed that despite sustained public agitations and repeated appeals by state leaders, MPs, MLAs, and civil society groups, the Union government has failed to re-spond positively.
'Thousands of days have passed since the demand for AIIMS in Raichur was first raised, but the Centre has not shown any serious intent. The anger among the people of Raichur is directed at the central government,' said Boseraju.
He further alleged that the BJP-led NDA government has dealt social, political, and economic blows to Raichur and the broader Kalyana Karnataka region, which enjoys special status under Article 371(J) of the Constitution. He re-minded that it was the UPA government that eventually accorded this constitu-tional recognition, and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had allocated Rs5,000 crore for the region's development during his tenure.
Boseraju also highlighted that the Nanjundappa Committee had recommended setting up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Raichur to spur educa-tional and economic development. However, the previous BJP government allegedly shifted the proposal to Dharwad, ignoring the interests of the back-ward Raichur district.
'Even after promising AIIMS for Raichur, BJP leaders have failed to deliver. The promise remains unfulfilled. Multiple representations have been made to the Prime Minister, Union Health Minister, and other concerned authorities, but we have not received any positive response,' the minister said.
He criticised BJP leaders from Karnataka for choosing political grandstanding over developmental responsibility. 'They should protest against the Centre's economic policies, including rising prices of gas, petrol, and diesel, instead of targeting the state government,' he added.
Calling for accountability, Boseraju demanded that BJP leaders from Karna-taka—especially those holding ministerial posts at the Centre—should focus on addressing the genuine concerns of backward regions like Raichur. 'Let them first secure AIIMS for Raichur before staging political events here,' he urged.

MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday questioned the rationale behind a Maharashtra government resolution (GR) directing minority educational institutions to process first-year junior college admissions by implementing Constitutional and social reservations. A bench of Justices M S Karnik and N R Borkar asked the government pleader Neha Bhide to seek instructions on whether the government was willing to issue a corrigendum or withdraw the clause in the GR issued on May 6. "Why did you (government) bring in the minority institutes in the (ambit of) the GR? Withdraw the minority institutes from this. Every time you do not need an order from the court. Withdrawing or issuing a corrigendum is not difficult," the bench told government pleader Neha Bhide and asked her to seek instructions. It may be a bonafide mistake by the government for which a corrigendum can be issued, the bench said and posted the matter for further hearing on Thursday. The GR directing the implementation of SC, ST, and OBC quotas for admissions to first-year junior colleges governed by minority trusts was challenged on the ground that such institutions, both aided or unaided, are excluded from applying such reservations for socially and educationally backward classes under Article 15(5) of the Constitution. The petitions claimed that under Article 30 (1), minority institutions can establish and administer educational institutions. 'Judicial activism shouldn't turn into judicial terrorism': CJI BR Gavai
Chief Justice of India BR Gavai has emphasised that judicial activism is bound to stay, but it should not be turned into judicial terrorism. CJI Gavai said the power of judicial review should be used sparingly and only if a statute is violative of the basic structure of the Constitution. "Judicial activism is bound to stay. At the same time, judicial activism should not be turned into judicial terrorism. So, at times, you try to exceed the limits and try to enter into an area where normally the judiciary should not enter," Gavai said in response to a question from a legal news portal. Gavai described the Constitution as a "quiet revolution etched in ink" and a transformative force that not only guarantees rights but actively uplifts the historically oppressed. Speaking at the Oxford Union in London on the theme 'From Representation to Realisation: Embodying the Constitution's Promise' on Tuesday, the CJI, the second Dalit and the first Buddhist to hold India's highest judicial office, highlighted the positive impact of the Constitution on marginalised communities and gave his example to drive home the point. "Many decades ago, millions of citizens of India were called 'untouchables'. They were told they were impure. They were told that they did not belong. They were told that they could not speak for themselves. "But here we are today, where a person belonging to those very people is speaking openly, as the holder of the highest office in the judiciary of the country," the CJI said.

Haryana to chargesheet 80 irrigation officials after samples fail quality tests
The Haryana government has decided to chargesheet 80 officials from the irrigation department after multiple construction material samples from irrigation projects failed quality tests. Haryana Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Shruti Choudhry stated on Wednesday that 48 samples were collected from various ongoing projects, of which 18 did not meet quality standards. Official sources told The Indian Express that as many as 68 officials, ranging from junior engineers to executive engineers, will face chargesheets for major penalties under Section 7 of the Haryana Civil Services Rules. Additionally, 12 superintending engineers will be chargesheeted for minor penalties under Section 8 of the rules. Displeasure notes will also be issued to three chief engineers. The issue pertains to 23 canal rehabilitation projects spread across the state. Minister Choudhry noted that some projects were nearing completion, a phase in which the accountability of officials increases significantly. Following repeated complaints, the department's vigilance wing conducted raids and collected samples, leading to the action. She said that a significant portion of payments had already been made to contractors, adding that authorities would explore ways to recover funds where necessary. Reaffirming the state BJP government's zero-tolerance policy, she emphasised that 'there will be no compromise on the quality of construction material.' About the Kishau Dam project, Choudhry said that it is a national-level project and holds great importance for Haryana. Through this dam, Haryana will not only receive water for irrigation and drinking purposes. The state will get 709 cusecs of water from the Yamuna river through the Kishau Dam, she said.
