DOE aids 90 Orang Asli families in Pos Pulat ahead of dam project
GUA MUSANG: The Department of Environment (DOE) has extended support to nearly 90 Orang Asli families from the Temiar tribe in Pos Pulat, ensuring their welfare as the Nenggiri Hydroelectric Dam project progresses.
Kelantan DOE director Wan Aminordin Wan Kamaruddin highlighted the collaborative effort involving 15 government and private agencies. 'With Pos Pulat set to be submerged due to the dam construction, we aim to uplift the community through housing and social initiatives before their relocation,' he said.
The efforts were unveiled during the 4Xplore Teroka Alam programme, marking World Environment Day 2025 at the state level. Nenggiri assemblyman Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani also attended the event.
Wan Aminordin noted the three-day programme (June 26–28) seeks to foster unity between the Orang Asli and urban communities while promoting environmental awareness. 'Sports and shared activities help build goodwill. The Temiar tribe has shown remarkable cooperation, sacrificing their ancestral land for regional economic growth,' he added.

Tuaran: Sabah has always prioritised the environment, recognising it as both an integral part and a strategic pillar of sustainable development, said State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew. In her speech, Liew emphasised the need for policies that incorporate environmental considerations and standards into all development activities to ensure both social and ecological sustainability. She said the ongoing implementation of the Action Plans under the Sabah State Policy on the Environment 2019, carried out by various government agencies, reflects the State's continued commitment to environmental stewardship. 'In 2017, the Sabah State Policy on the Environment was launched, serving as our guiding framework alongside the Environment Protection Enactment 2002,' she said at the World Environment Day 2025 celebration, here, Thursday. The text of her speech was delivered by the Ministry's Deputy Permanent Secretary, Mary Isidore Malangking. Liew said environmental education is a dynamic process that builds awareness, knowledge and skills on environmental issues, ultimately driving behavioural and attitudinal changes that support conservation and sustainable management. To address the complex challenges of environmental education in the State, Liew said the Sabah Environmental Education Policy was developed and officially launched in November 2009, as a vital platform to align stakeholder efforts in implementing comprehensive and effective environmental education initiatives. 'I am proud to say that Sabah is the first state in Malaysia to have an environmental education policy,' she said. Liew also highlighted several key milestones that have advanced environmental education in Sabah, including the launch of Sekolah Rakan Alam Sekitar (Serasi) in 2003 and the establishment of the Sabah Environmental Education Network in 2005. In a related development, she said the Environment Protection Department of Sabah recently conducted a study titled 'Development of Educational Materials and Best Practices Report on the Implementation of the Sabah Environmental Education Policy', which, among other outcomes, produced educational resources aimed at strengthening environmental education delivery. MCMC delivers enhanced connectivity to Kg Bering Baru Orang Asli settlement
KOTA BHARU: Residents of the Orang Asli settlement in Kampung Bering Baru, Gua Musang, now enjoy improved connectivity thanks to proactive efforts by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Among the initiatives introduced is the provision of collective Internet access via free WiFi technology. 'Under this service, residents can access the Internet for free through the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) facility provided. 'Registered users are entitled to 5GB of free data per month, with the option to purchase additional data through appointed agents,' MCMC said in a statement today. Kampung Bering Baru is one of 18 Orang Asli locations in Gua Musang to benefit from BWA services under the National Digital Network (JENDELA) plan. 'As a long-term solution, MCMC has identified a site near Kampung Bering Baru for the construction of a new telecommunications tower. The proposal has been included in the next phase of infrastructure development under the JENDELA plan. 'MCMC will continue to monitor and ensure that communication coverage in this area remains optimal for the comfort and benefit of residents,' the statement added.
