Netflix has 15 new releases this week — full list and the 7 you need to watch
Sports fans and documentary lovers will want to check out "America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys," which gives us a never-before-seen look at the rise of Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys as the NFL's preeminent brand. These aren't the only shows and movies worth keeping an eye on. I've found seven top picks in all worth considering for your watchlist this week, including "The 355," a much-maligned box office bomb that is surprisingly beloved by audiences.

"Hostage" is a new political thriller miniseries starring Suranne Jones as Abigail Dalton, the Prime Minister of the U.K. She's in a tense border standoff with the French President, Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy), and they arrive at a summit to hash things out. But once she's there, she suddenly gets a call — her husband has been abducted.
The abductors deliver an ultimatum to Abigail. She needs to give up her power and resign as Prime Minister to get her husband back. If she refuses, she could lose him for good. Of course, the trailer reveals she'll do no such thing. So now, she needs to navigate challenges from Toussaint, the terrorists and her own political allies (and enemies) at home to get her family back without losing everything.

The Dallas Cowboys have been a relevant name in the NFL for decades. Legendary coach Tom Landry took the team to five Super Bowls in the 1970s, winning two of them. But by the time 1989 rolled around, things reached their nadir, and Jerry Jones took advantage to scoop up the franchise for $150 million.

That may seem like chump change today for a franchise worth $12.8 billion, but at the time, failure would have left Jones with nothing. So it was a shock when the first thing he did was fire Landry and hire Jimmy Johnson, the University of Miami coach who Jones played with at the University of Arkansas.
The rest, as they say, is history. The Cowboys would win three Super Bowls in the 1990s — though they've never been back since. "America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys" tells the whole tale, including all the drama, with never-before-seen footage and interviews with Cowboys legends, including Jones, Johnson, Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman, Deion Sanders and Michael Irvin. You won't want to miss it.

"The 355" stars Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, Diane Kruger and Lupita Nyong'o as rival spies all hunting for a special decryption program drive that can access any digital system on Earth, but they're not alone. Criminal mastermind Elijah Clarke (Jason Flemyng) also wants the drive, and he'll kill anyone to get it.
One of the people he kills is Mace's partner (Sebastian Stan), and it's his off-screen death that throws these women into a globetrotting race against each other, which eventually puts them directly in the path of Chinese MSS spy Li Mi Sheng (Fan Bingbing).
It's important to set your expectations appropriately going into "The 355." While billed as a franchise starting girl-boss team-up between some of the hottest actresses of the 2010s, it's a run-of-the-mill action popcorn flick that just happens to feature women instead of men in the leading roles. Critics hated it, but if you go in only expecting to have a (hopefully) fun time watching these women work against, and then later with, each other, you might have a good experience, like most people who've seen this movie and rated it on Rotten Tomatoes.

If you loved "Bojack Horseman," then you'll want to check out "Long Story Short," from Raphael Bob-Waksberg, who also created the former series. This animated sitcom tells the story of a middle-class Jewish family, specifically the three siblings of the family: Avi (Ben Feldman), Shira (Abbi Jacobson), and Yoshi (Max Greenfield).
"Long Story Short" follows these three and the people in their lives across more than 30 years, shifting back and forth between their highly religious childhood and the experiences of their ordinary adult lives. It's also already been renewed for a second season, so don't worry about committing only for the show to be canceled.
From watching the trailer, I'll admit that I'm a bit underwhelmed by the animation, which looks similar to the animation of "Bojack" but somehow less refined. However, I was not underwhelmed by the story and writing overall, which had me laughing at multiple points during the one-minute and 45-second trailer.

Jussie Smollett was riding high at the start of 2019, one of the stars of the Fox drama series "Empire." But on Jan. 29, he reported to Chicago police that he had been the victim of a hate crime, alleging that he had been physically attacked outside his apartment and assailed with racial and homophobic slurs.
But a mere two weeks later, Chicago police announced that he had instead paid two brothers to stage the assault, and within less than a month, Smollett was charged with a felony for filing a false police report. Here's where things take yet another turn. After a deal that saw the charges dropped following community service — which Smollett completed — he was tried again in 2020, this time sentenced to jail time and significant restitution to the city of Chicago. This saga just resolved itself this past May, with Smollett and the city settling civil claims after the Illinois Supreme Court overturned the conviction, ruling Smollett's due process was violated.
Now, "The Truth About Jussie Smollett?" looks to tell the full story, including a reexamination of whether Smollett was telling the truth this entire time. It also features interviews with Smollett, making this documentary compelling to watch regardless of the conclusion.

"Rivers of Fate" stars Domithila Cattete as Janalice, a Brazilian girl in Belém do Pará whose life seems to be cursed. But things for her go from bad to worse once she's kidnapped by human traffickers who intend to prostitute her in a sex trafficking operation. She's not the only cursed character in this Brazilian miniseries from Oscar-nominated "City of God" screenwriter Bráulio Mantovani. There's also Preá (Lucas Galvino), who is struggling to come to terms with his doomed fate as the leader of a gang of 'water rats,' criminals who operate in the rivers near the city on Brazil's northern Atlantic coast.
Then there's Mariangel (Marleyda Soto), who seeks revenge for the death of her family. All three characters are used to highlight the struggles of life in Pará, and their stories intertwine as they try and shake their cursed fates. Don't miss this gripping miniseries when it hits Netflix this week.

Another foreign language addition to Netflix this week, "Fall for Me" is a German drama set in the Spanish island paradise of Mallorca and it looks gripping. The erotic thriller stars Svenja Jung as Lilli, a German woman who visits Mallorca to live with her sister Valeria for a while. But upon her arrival, she finds her sister is shockingly engaged, soon to be married to Manu, a Frenchman, and the pair plan to invest their money in a high-quality bed-and-breakfast.
Lilli smells a scam, so she starts looking into Manu's true intentions. That digging leads her to cross paths with Tom (Theo Trebs), an enigmatic nightclub owner, and he and Lilli begin a steamy, heated romance. Their affair is either destined to be short-lived or doomed to failure, because Tom seems to have some sinister secrets he's hiding from Lilli, based on the movie's trailer. Don't miss "Fall for Me" when it arrives on Netflix this week.

Remember this? More specifically, remember when a reporter asked Volodymyr Zelensky why he didn't wear a suit, and it turned into a whole thing? Zelensky replied, "I will wear a costume after this war will finish. Maybe something like yours, maybe something better, I don't know. We will see. Maybe something cheaper." People thought the whole thing was "deranged." Marco Rubio couldn't believe it either. And now, Zelensky is back at the White House along with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. People were wondering if Zelensky would wear a suit after that whole thing in February, and today we found out. He showed up wearing this: "First of all, President Zelesnky, you look fabulous in that suit. You look good," the reporter said. "I said the same thing," Trump said back. "I said the same thing. Isn't that nice? That's the same one that attacked you last time," Trump continued. That's when the reporter says, "I apologize to you. You look wonderful." Zelensky had the last word on this one when he told the guy: "You're in the same suit. You see, I have changed. You have not." Then the whole room erupted in laughter. As this person said, "Even Trump had to admit this was a great comeback."

Huda Mustafa and Louis Russell Just Soft-Launched Their Relationship
Huda Mustafa and Louis Russell may have found love outside the Love Island USA villa, but that doesn't mean they couldn't soft-launch their relationship in a tropical destination. According to an Instagram Story post from Huda on Sunday, August 17, the couple is going strong. While they aren't IG official in terms of a grid post, the pair posed for a sweet selfie after snorkeling during a recent vacation. Louis also doubled down on the soft launch, posting a TikTok promoting his new track, 'She Pretty,' on August 18. In the clip, a hand grabs his face off-camera, and fans are convinced it's the Love Islander thanks to the matching tattoos and manicure. The song also seems to be about his new flame, as it features lyrics like 'TikTok know she pretty / IG know she pretty / Going viral 'cause she pretty / They follow 'cause she pretty.' (Shakespeare has been real quiet since Louis dropped this, just saying.) Both soft launches come after the pair held hands on the red carpet of the Weapons premiere on July 31. The timing considering Too Hot to Handle alum Louis Russell is currently starring in season 3 of Netflix's Perfect Match. His Perfect Match castmate, Rachel Recchia, claimed that the move was 'selfish' as it spoiled his fate on the show, which was still airing at the time. 'It's literally airing—we have what, maybe two weeks? It feels, like, a little selfish,' Rachel said during an appearance on The Viall Files podcast on August 5. She revealed that Huda and Louis' red carpet debut came in the middle of the Netflix reality series' release schedule, adding, 'It affects the whole cast.' She confirmed that there's no beef between her and Louis, though. 'I love him as a person. I think he's amazing,' she said. 'I get along with him so well. He's such great TV.' As for Huda and Louis, they seem generally unbothered by the whole thing. According to fan reposts, they could not be more in love. With Denzel Washington's Co-Sign, Ilfenesh Hadera Became Highest 2 Lowest's Secret Weapon
Spike Lee trusts her. Denzel Washington knows what she can do. Now is time for the rest of Hollywood to wake up to the powerhouse that is Ilfenesh Hadera. 'Put me in, coach,' The Harlem-born actor said to Refinery29 in a recent Zoom interview. In Spike Lee's latest joint, Highest 2 Lowest, Hadera stars opposite Washington as Pam King. The neo-noir thriller, which is an adaptation of Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's High and Low, follows David King (Washington), a successful music executive who gets extorted by an up-and-coming rapper (A$AP Rocky). David faces the ultimate moral dilemma as he's forced to make a decision that could either cost him his family and legacy or his empire. Though the choice is ultimately David's, his wife Pam becomes a critical sounding board. She's the film's 'North Star,' Hadera said. Her voice also offers the thesis for the underlying message in the film: when did the art we make become less important than fame and riches that come with it? Like Washington, Hadera has become a regular in Lee's work. She first appeared in Da Brick, Oldboy and Chi-Raq and then landed a more significant role in the Netflix adaptation of She's Gotta Have It. She said his sets foster a freedom to be creative and fly or fail without fear. 'On a Spike joint, he keeps the same loyal, capable people around project after project. So despite the newness of it all on a movie set, everybody feels really relaxed and kind of at home,' she said. 'You don't always get that and you have to feel free as an artist to play and maybe not get it right.' And though the role of Pam King is a dream the Harlem-born actor manifested, she's nowhere new to this. With an acting career that spans 15 years, she's worked her way up the call sheet through dozens of projects, including Billions, Master of None and Chicago Fire. She's currently starring in Godfather of Harlem, which is heading into its fifth and final season, opposite Forest Whitaker. *Minor spoilers ahead.* Refinery29: There wasn't a role for you in the script initially. How did your role as Pam King come about? Ilfenesh Hadera: I saw that Spike had this collaboration coming up with Denzel on this Kurosawa film. And I was like this is incredible first for Spike as a friend and supporter of his, I know how much he loves Kurosawa's work. I saw that announcement and I was so stoked for him. And then, of course, I'm like is there a role for me in this? Spike actually asked what my upcoming schedule looked like so I was like, this might be a good sign. As I'm watching the original film, I'm thinking there aren't many female roles in this movie. I reached out to my agent, and asked if he read the script. And he very, like, bluntly, said, 'There's no role for you in this.' But I still held out hope, because Spike had asked about my availability. And then the calls from Kim Coleman, Spike's longtime casting director, started coming in, and the rest is history. It was such an emotional roller coaster. It's like a testament to the idea that closed mouths don't get fed, right? IH: Truly. I mean, I don't like to ask for much. Spike has become such a dear friend of mine, and he's kept me in work for so many years. He knows my artistic abilities. So, if he doesn't think of me for a part, I don't want to come to him who's given me so much already with hands out. I'd much rather him come to me and say, 'Hey, I've got this idea.' Maybe it's a smaller role, maybe it's the role of Pam King, which is a more significant role. But, you know, I always like to let him initiate conversations about casting. ' Spike trusts me. He's not gonna put my name in the mix if he's not sure that I can bring it... [but] it feels nice to know that I got the Denzel Washington co-sign and it wasn't all Spike's pull. Ilfenesh Hadera ' IH: At this point, I'm like, wow, Spike trusts me. He's not gonna put my name in the mix if he's not sure that I can bring it. We've worked together for many years and are close, but he said to me going into the chemistry read with Denzel, 'This is going to be Denzel's choice. He brought me this project, he's a producer on it, he's the star of the show, so this decision will really be his in the end.' So it feels nice to know that I got the Denzel Washington co-sign and it wasn't all Spike's pull. I can't even imagine the feeling as an actor. Of course, Denzel has been in so many Spike Lee joints. So to have not only that trust from him, but also that trust from Spike. He's tapping you in similar ways that he's tapped Denzel throughout his career. IH: It feels great and validating, but also, at this point in my career, I'm like give me a chance, man. Put me in, coach. I know what I can do. You just hope that the people around you trust you and will let you do what you know you can. It's not every day that people have faith in your abilities and let you show them and rise to the occasion. What role do you think Pam has when it comes to her husband's decision? IH: I think she gives him the freedom to figure it out. People have been calling her the moral compass. I think she guides him gently towards what they both know is the right thing to do. She's not naive, despite knowing what the choice to make is to the implications of giving up basically all they own. What does this mean for their life, for their lifestyle, for what they've worked so hard to build? But I think she lets him come to the right conclusion on his own while guiding him with a gentle hand. I love how this film emphasizes the value of Black art over fame and riches. But a lot of times art does get compromised for business. I'm curious if this film challenged or influenced how you think about and approach art going forward? IH: If you're lucky, you get both. And that is such a very small percentage of artists who get the pleasure of doing work that they're passionate about and being able to live a nice lifestyle. You hope people don't go into this with the goal of achieving fame or becoming a multimillionaire. Those should not be the reasons you follow the path of an artist but you shouldn't be demonized for wanting to be recognized by people who consume and love your art and wanting to live a nice lifestyle. When I think about projects that are presented to me or jobs that I choose to do, I'm at a place where I do have some financial freedom. I'm really grateful for not being dictated by the dollar amount attached to the project. I have taken jobs in the past that don't strike a creative nerve but, financially, have been necessary for me at the time, and that's not where you want to be. If you can create a foundation so you can stop doing work because of the paycheck, you're in a really great spot. But I'm not turning my nose up at anyone who chooses jobs for safety. We've all got to live. And it's harder and harder right now in this industry. So it becomes more and more challenging to say no to a gig. Are there any artistically underrated or projects that you've been a part of that you feel like didn't get the attention that they deserve? IH: I know people are starting to get hip to Godfather of Harlem. When Epix greenlit us, it was a pretty little known network. Now Epix is MGM, MGM plus. But I think, at the time, if that show had been on another streamer with more subscribers, it would have exploded. But it has to be this perfect storm, right? I think we're starting to get more love, but I wish it had been that way from the beginning. But then you look at a show like The Wire, when that was on in real time, some people were watching it. But now we consider [The Wire] one of the best television shows of all time. So maybe we just need to take a little time step away from it and revisit in a few years, when people have finally caught up to us.
