(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: A 48-year-old man claimed trial in the Sepang sessions court today to 11 charges of making offensive comments on Facebook against former MP Nurul Izzah Anwar earlier this year. Ruslan Mat Ali, a father of three, pleaded not guilty before judge Ahmad Fuad Othman after the charges were read, Harian Metro reported.
Advertisement In making his plea, he claimed he had dropped his handphone while fishing and had no idea how the Facebook comments were made. He was accused of knowingly using his Facebook account to send offensive comments against Nurul Izzah with the intention of annoying others. He was charged with committing the offences between Jan 2 and Feb 26. The charges were framed under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act, punishable by a maximum RM50,000 fine, up to one year's imprisonment, or both, upon conviction.
Advertisement Deputy public prosecutor Fadhli Ab Wahab asked the court to fix bail at RM15,000. However, Ruslan, who was unrepresented, sought a lower bail amount, saying he had no income, was divorced, and had to look after three children. The judge granted bail of RM10,000 and fixed July 18 for mention. GENERAL BUTTERWORTH, June 20 (Bernama) -- The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is finalising the investigation papers for action to be taken in court against the bus company operator involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students Its director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the investigation is now in the final stages before being handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor to decide on the charge recommendation. Regarding the allegation that the JPJ could not record the bus company's operator's statement because he suffered a heart attack, Aedy Fadly said his side was not informed about the matter. "He (the bus operator) had a heart attack, it has nothing to do with the JPJ and I have not received any reports saying otherwise. We will still take action; if he goes to the hospital we will wait," he added. In the incident on June 9, 15 UPSI students died when the bus they were in overturned in an accident at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. The bus carrying 42 university students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when it collided with a Perodua Alza before overturning.

His lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, confirmed the development on Friday, stating Najib is relieved to have fewer cases weighing on him, particularly after multiple previous requests for a DNAA. The High Court here today granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak over three money laundering charges involving RM27 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd. - Bernama file photo With this, he said Najib can now concentrate fully on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case. The High Court allowed the DNAA application filed on June 11. The decision followed Najib's failed bid to have the charges dropped after the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) rejected his representation on July 31, 2023. Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul had initially requested the court to set a new date for trial. However, Shafee again pressed for a DNAA, pointing out that the case had been ongoing since 2019 with over six years of delays. When asked about the possibility of an appeal, Shafee clarified that the deputy public prosecutor cannot challenge the decision, as the prosecution retains the option to pursue the case again once they are prepared. 'Of course, we hope they do not, because this case has already prejudiced against Najib. So I hope the Attorney General will use his discretion and authority to close the case,' he said. Najib was charged on Feb 3, 2019, with receiving RM27 million from illegal proceeds through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank, Jalan Raja Chulan, on July 8, 2014. The charges were brought under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, which carries a maximum of five years in prison, a RM5 million fine, or both, upon conviction. Despite this discharge, Najib continues to serve his sentence at Kajang Prison for misappropriating RM42 million from the same SRC International fund. He began serving his sentence on Aug 23, 2022. He was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison and a RM210 million fine, which were upheld by the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court. However, a royal pardon petition filed on Sept 2, 2022, led to the Pardons Board reducing his sentence to six years and the fine to RM50 million.
