Virginia governor candidates vow to end 'car tax'

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia's car tax is widely considered the most-hated tax in the state, and it could be coming to an end soon. Both candidates for the Virginia governor's race have expressed their desire to eliminate the state's car tax. Republican Lt. Gov Winsome Earle-Sears recently announced her 'Axe the Tax' initiative, which would end the state's car tax as well as income taxes on tipped wages. A campaign spokesperson for Democrat Abigail Spanberger said, 'Abigail will work with both Democrats and Republicans to put Virginia on a real path towards eliminating the car tax once and for all.' However, the state estimates an elimination of the state's car tax would cost localities around 2.5 to 3 billion a year, a price some state lawmakers are concerned about. 'You got to wrestle through a way to deal with that. That doesn't leave the localities holding the bag because it's localities who pick up most of the cost. For example, your local police department or your local school divisions,' said Sen. Mark Warner. In a statement sent to 10 On Your side, Sen Tim Kaine said, 'This is a complicated issue that requires delicate balancing, and it's ultimately up to the General Assembly to make changes to the state tax code.' Despite the hefty price, some residents in the Hampton Roads area are still in favor of eliminating the tax. 'I most certainly am in favor of whichever candidate wins to stop, to eliminate, to get rid of the personal property taxes on our cars. There's other avenues, where a city can bring in that extra money so, I would say let's end it and go from there,' said Portsmouth resident Michael Crowell. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Repairs begin on Blue Bridge in Owensboro

OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — Lane restrictions are underway on the Blue Bridge in Owensboro. This is the first phase of repairs that are set to begin after the fourth of July holiday weekend. Currently one lane of Kentucky 2262 will remain open during this initial part of the work which will include flaggers directing alternating one-lane traffic. After the 4th of July the bridge will be completely closed for 90 days this summer. During the closure crews will replace the aging bridge deck, make concrete repairs and repair bridge joints. Officials say only closing one lane at a time is impossible, requiring the bridge to close completely. The repairs will allow for long-term concrete maintenance to be completed helping to keep the bridge safe and open for years to come. The lane restrictions should end June 12th before being closed for 90 days. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. U.S. 41 lanes to re-open as ramps with Lloyd Expressway close

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – A stretch of Highway 41 that has been closed and under construction for months will finally see traffic next week. At the same time, drivers will have to navigate new closures near Highway 41 and the Lloyd Expressway. The southbound lanes of Highway 41 between Diamond Avenue and the Lloyd will reopen on or around June 17, but traffic in both directions will still be down to two lanes as crews continue their work. INDOT also says drivers will be able to turn left all along southbound 41. Also on June 17, the approach to U.S. 41 from Virginia Street will re-open to drivers as crews have resurfaced the area and reconstructed the sidewalks. Drive Clean Indiana eyeing Evansville as its next big E-V charging hub A 3-week closure is set for the ramp from southbound 41 to the westbound Lloyd, with the southbound 41 on-ramp from the westbound Lloyd to close for 2 weeks. Gary Brian with INDOT says this is part of a larger re-construction up and down the highway. 'This has been a stretch of roadway that has needed work for years,' says Brian. 'We know, I think anybody who has driven through Evansville. I knew driving through Evansville, right, that there were areas that were rough, that needed a complete reconstruction. So, you know, every road has its lifespan, and this stretch of 41 had reached the end of its lifespan.' The dates and the construction timeline are weather-permitting. Brian says the entire Highway 41 re-construction should be wrapped up later this Fall. You can read about the full breakdown of these re-openings and closures by clicking here.
