The San Diego Padres have one of baseball's best pitchers in Mason Miller. He has one of the fastest pitches in baseball, capable of reaching 104 miles per hour on his fastball.
Against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the eighth inning, Miller was on the mound, and facing Lourdes Gurriel Jr. with a runner on base in a 5-3 game. The Padres reliever threw a 103.9 mph fastball, which was hit out for a home run to tie the game.
As ESPN referenced, this home run from Gurriel was the hardest thrown pitch hit out for a home run in Major League Baseball since 2008, when MLB began its pitch tracking.
Hitting a home run is hard enough as it is, but to hit one out on a pitch above 100 mph is even more impressive. Gurriel's home run became the fastest pitch a player has ever hit a home run on, with his being a 439-foot blast to left field.
Miller held the previous record, a 103.2 mph pitch to Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ in September of 2024. Aroldis Chapman, one of the game's most iconic flame-throwing relievers, has the next three fastest pitches hit out for home runs.

But Miller is the only pitcher to see a home run hit out on a pitch above 103 mph, with his latest to Gurriel nearly reaching the 104 mph threshold.
The Diamondbacks tied the game in the eighth inning, and Miller allowed his first runs in a Padres uniform. But, with the game going to extra innings, the Padres pulled ahead and won 10-5 in 11 innings.
Gurriel's record-breaking home run off Miller raised his ERA to 4.02 on the season. While he hasn't been like his 2024 self, who was an All-Star with a 2.49 ERA, he's still been an above-average pitcher this season.
This home run didn't cost the Padres the win, but it did break an MLB record. It's not easy hitting a home run on a pitch this fast, and with Gurriel's home run, no other batter has hit a faster pitch for a home run since 2008.

Detroit Tigers rout Minnesota Twins 7-0; Charlie Morton strikes out five over six innings

Charlie Morton gave up two hits and struck out five over six innings and the Detroit Tigers scored five runs in the first inning of a 7-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. Dillon Dingler hit a two-run single in the first, in which the Tigers batted around against Twins starter Pierson Ohl (0-3), who was making his fifth career start. An error by Minnesota second baseman Luke Keaschall led to four unearned runs. That was enough for 41-year-old right-hander Morton (8-10), who bounced back after a rough start against the Angels his last time out. Ohl, who faced Detroit earlier this month, lasted only 2 1/3 innings. Four of the seven total runs he surrendered were unearned. Dingler drove in his third run of the game with a double in the third. Javier Báez also drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers, who are leading the AL Central. Spencer Torkelson reached base three times and scored twice for Detroit. The start of Friday's game was delayed 26 minutes due to rain. Keaschall reached base three times, but his error in the first inning helped open the floodgates for the Tigers. It was the second error of his young 17-game MLB career. Friday was Morton's second start of the year in which he did not allow a run. He also put up a zero in a five-inning start against Baltimore in June. RHP Casey Mize (11-4, 3.50 ERA) starts the third game of the series for the Tigers and looks to win his third straight outing. The Twins counter with RHP Zebby Matthews (3-4, 5.11), who beat Detroit in his prior start against the Tigers this season.

Padres' Dylan Cease gets bad news after latest Mason Miller report

Padres' Dylan Cease gets bad news after latest Mason Miller report originally appeared on The Sporting News The San Diego Padres had the best trade deadline in Major League Baseball, no matter how anyone wants to put it. Of course, one could argue for a few other teams, but the Padres did what they had to do, and they're currently reaping the benefits of that, now leading the Los Angeles Dodgers by one game. Their biggest trade deadline acquisition, Mason Miller, who went for one of the top prospects in Major League Baseball, Leo De Vries, might not just be a closer for the Padres moving forward. Many view him as a potential starter, and according to a recent report from Thomas Harrigan, that could affect some of the Padres' free agents, including Dylan Cease. "The flamethrowing right-hander has given San Diego's bullpen another electric arm, though it remains to be seen how long he'll actually stay there. No, Miller isn't going anywhere -- he's controllable through 2029 -- but there have been rumblings that the Padres could consider transitioning him back to the rotation in the future. With Dylan Cease, Michael King and the newly acquired Nestor Cortes all nearing free agency, how the Friars decide to proceed with Miller could have a major impact on their approach to the starting pitching market this offseason," he wrote. MORE:Padres' JP Sears' minor league outing very important amid Michael King's injury If the Padres plan to stretch Miller out over the next few months, after the season, and convert him to a full-time starter, there wouldn't be much of a reason to keep all three of Cease, Michael King, and Nestor Cortes on the roster. Cease is likely still the best pitcher in that group, but Miller worked as a starter earlier in his career, and if his fastball plays at the level it has in a starting rotation, he'd be dominant, which could lead to Cease leaving in free agency.
