Amazon shoppers say £6 buy is 'great cost-effective addition to any house'

Edinburgh Live08-07-2025
Amazon has slashed the price of an essential product that's a staple in every British home. Shoppers have been praising its ability to bring a touch of hotel-style luxury to their homes without breaking the bank.
During the summer Amazon Prime Day event, running from July 8 to 11, the online retailer announced reductions on a wide range of goods, including top-tier electronic devices, stylish clothes, beauty products and children's toys. Amongst these bargains was the Amazon 2-Ply Embossed Toilet Roll.
In an impressive pack of 18 rolls, the Amazon own brand batch packs in 200 sheets per roll. Available exclusively to Prime members, families can now bulk buy this bathroom necessity for the bargain price of £5.84.
This means thrifty shoppers with enough storage can pick up rolls that work out at approximately 34p each, making bathroom visits a little less expensive over time. Competing bulk deals are also on offer at wholesalers like Costco with their Kirkland Signature Triple Satin 3-Ply Toilet Tissue (40 rolls, £22.99), and at B&Q with the Nicky Soft Touch White Toilet Roll (32 rolls, £10).
But, many Amazon users have been persuaded to abandon the convenience of high-street stores in favour of the digital deal, reports the Mirror. A satisfied customer said: "I didn't realise what I was missing until I tried the Amazon Toilet Roll, 2-Ply Embossed, Soft. It's soft, strong, and makes me feel like I'm living in a five-star hotel bathroom. Seriously, it's like they took the concept of comfort and turned it into paper."

One more shared: "I have used many different types of toilet paper in my life, from that scratchy stuff we had as kids in the 80s to a posh hotel where they gave you a live white dove to wipe your bottom with. But this Amazon stuff is the best: soft but strong, and it doesn't try to fly off when you use it."
A third added: "I usually buy toilet paper from the supermarket, when I do my weekly shopping, but I ran out, so I thought I'd look an Amazon for a quick option. They are soft, thick enough and clean well. Plus, they're budget-friendly!"
However, not all reviews were glowing, with one user claiming: "It's ok but very thin and fragments and leaves bits where you don't want bits - if you know what I mean." Another cautioned: "Probably the most fragile toilet paper I've ever experienced outside of a public loo; you have to use at least three sheets for any sort of integrity!"

Despite these criticisms, the product has gained thousands of positive reviews online. One such review read: "I've been using the Amazon toilet rolls for quite some time now, and I can confidently say they are a fantastic addition to any bathroom. This pack is an absolute lifesaver, especially for busy households like mine. With 200 sheets per roll, you get great value, and they last ages, so you won't find yourself running out unexpectedly."
A fifth customer praised the product in their review saying: "Fantastic quality, I now use these on a rolling delivery instead of a previous brand. The paper is very soft and has a very neutral scent. The rolls are large and last really long."
Shoppers can benefit from never having to think about buying toilet roll again with Amazon's Subscribe and Save model. This offers a small discount for committing to buy the same products again and again after a certain period of time.

Pouring pints helping to fund grassroots sports clubs across the country

Pouring pints has been helping to be keep grassroots sports clubs alive, thanks to Greene King IPA's Proud to Pitch In scheme. The pub chain has donated more than £1 million since its launch in 2021 with more than 370 teams across the UK supported thanks to pints sold up and down the country. Clubs are able to apply for grants of up to £4,000 as Greene King look to tackle the rising challenges facing clubs. According to Sport England, one in four grassroots sports clubs is at risk of closure due to financial pressure and 42 per cent of adults from lower socio-economic groups are inactive. This is despite the huge benefits that come with being active, including boosts to physical and mental health and creating more connected communities. Gemma Woolnough-Smith, Marketing Manager for Greene King IPA, said: 'Grassroots sport is where champions start out, but more importantly, it's where communities come together, barriers break down, and lifelong memories are made. 'For the clubs receiving this support, it's a lifeline. From park pitches at local parks to paddling out at dawn, these vital teams are doing more than playing sport - they're actively changing lives and strengthening their communities. 'Reaching this £1 million milestone is a proud moment, and as we are now firmly in this year's summer of sport, we want to celebrate all of the sport clubs out there making a difference in their communities. 'The clubs supported by Proud to Pitch In are proof that when you invest in grassroots, you help raise the bar for everyone.' Greater London received the most support to power vital community projects, with 35 clubs funded and more than £93,000 invested, showing strong grassroots engagement in the capital. The West Midlands follows, 17 projects supported and nearly £47,000 awarded in funding. Devon and West Yorkshire also each saw 13 clubs supported, receiving over £40,000 and £37,000 to feed back into their local sports teams. Mark Shearer, Founder and CEO of ActionFunder, said: 'This milestone shows what real community support looks like. £1 million isn't just a big number. It's surfboards in the sea, ropes ready for international competitions, and vital sessions that give people the chance to train, belong and thrive. 'We've seen firsthand how Greene King IPA's Proud to Pitch In scheme transforms community projects on the ActionFunder platform. It has funded clubs focused on bringing people together, breaking down barriers and encouraging groups to stay active. Whether it's a veteran learning to surf or a teenager stepping onto a pitch for the first time, this is grant giving at its most powerful. 'Through ActionFunder, businesses like Greene King are transforming local communities. We're proud of our partnership to deliver vital funds to community groups across the UK.' Minister insists fuel supplies not under threat despite oil refinery closure

State Oil – the parent company of Prax Group, which owns the Lindsey refinery in North Lincolnshire – collapsed into administration last month, putting hundreds of jobs at risk. Michael Shanks pledged to support the workers who are facing redundancy, but said there is little action the Government can take to improve the statutory redundancy offer. Speaking in the Commons, he said: 'We have worked urgently to ensure the safety of the refinery site, the security of fuel supplies and to protect workers. 'This has also allowed time for bidders to express an interest in the site. 'Following a thorough process, the official receiver has rigorously assessed all the bids received and concluded that sale of the business as a whole is not a credible option.' He added: 'A package has been offered to all those directly employed at the refinery, which guarantees their jobs and pay over the coming months. 'And alongside the usual support that is offered to workforces in insolvency situations, the Government will also immediately fund a comprehensive training guarantee for those refinery workers to ensure they have the skills needed and the support to find jobs, for example, in the growing clean energy workforce.' The Lindsey site is one of only five large oil refineries remaining in the UK after the recent closure of the Grangemouth plant in Scotland. Prax Group is led by majority owner and chairman and chief executive Sanjeev Kumar Soosaipillai, who bought the Lindsey oil refinery from French firm Total in 2021. Shadow energy minister Andrew Bowie, who tabled the urgent question, claimed 625 jobs are at risk as he pressed the minister for an update on its investigation into the collapse of the company. He also asked: 'What, if any, assessment has been made into the UK's resilience given the steep reduction in our refining capacity over the past six months? 'What, if any, assessment has been made on the increased reliance on imports that will be necessary as a result of the reduction in British refining capacity?' Mr Shanks said fuel supplies had 'adjusted' in the past few weeks, adding: 'Our assessment suggests there isn't an immediate risk to fuel supplies locally or in the wider area, but we'll continue to monitor that.' On the investigation, he said: 'There is not much I can update the House on at the moment, because the insolvency service is carrying out that investigation.' Conservative MP Martin Vickers, whose Brigg and Immingham constituency includes the oil refinery, said he wanted to see 'the maximum support given to those workers'. Mr Shanks replied: 'We have looked and pushed and pushed to see if there is more action Government can take to change or to give any additional payments. 'It's not possible for Government to do that, not least because the insolvency service has to follow very specific rules in terms of creditors and what their parameters are to operate in the event of an insolvency. 'But I do think the owners of this company have profited from this business, and they should do the right thing by the workforce that delivered that for them.'

Get AirPods for £70 less than Apple and Amazon with rare Wowcher deal

Apple fans can save money on a new pair of AirPods Apple AirPods are often considered one of the best wireless earphones money can buy for iPhone users, but they often come with a big cost. In a new offer, deals site Wowcher is offering a much cheaper price for the pair. The AirPods Gen 3 are being sold for £99 on Wowcher, that's £70 cheaper than Apple's original £169 launch price. They have immersive spacial audio - so the sound will stay equal when you move around. This creates a more immersive experience for the listener as the audio level dynamically adjusts. Despite not being the newest Apple AirPods 4, launched last year, the pair have a handful of quality features. Including a decent battery of up to 30 hours playtime, smooth Bluetooth pairing between Apple devices, and IPX4 rating - which means they are sweat and water resistant. There is one thing to note, the pair are refurbished and come packaged in a A++ condition, however they have not been worn before and instead are from returned, opened boxes. As Wowcher states: "Grade A++ (Very Good). These are unused products that were opened by a customer and returned to Apple. "Close to pristine—with only minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. Functionality is fully intact." Another note of the condition, is that the tech 'won't arrive in Apple packaging', something which is also outlined by Wowcher. This specific model of AirPods was launched in 2021, so they are three years old, but that doesn't mean they scrimp on capabilities. The wireless pair is still supported by MagSafe charging and has built-in microphones so users can take calls. However, a downfall is the lack of active noise-cancelling tech. This can be found on the newer 2024 AirPods Gen 4, which are now selling at Apple from £129. However, the active noise-cancelling pair starts at £179 at Apple or £149 at EE. For shoppers who'd prefer the AirPods Gen 3 but a pair that hasn't been returned by previous shoppers, Amazon is an option. The retailer is selling the AirPods Gen 3 for £167. This may be over some shoppers budgets, and if so there are cheaper wireless pairs to look at. The first is another budget Amazon find, the Bluetooth 5.4 earphones for £21, and while not a brand many may have heard of I have tested them out before. Rating them 'as good as big name brands' this is what I said: "They'll never be able compete with the likes of Galaxy Buds, Pixel Buds, Bose headphones, or Apple's newest AirPods Gen 4 - and by no means am I trying to say that - but for the price I have found these to be a bargain. "Perfectly suited for basic listening. And the sound quality has been surprisingly good, considering. The Btootos A90 True Wireless Earbuds are an ideal choice for casual listening, targeting users who desire good sound quality, comfort and wireless charging. "I've worn these while working from home and travelling on the tube and long-haul flights when I haven't wanted to take my Bose headphones with me." Another option is over at Argos, as it stocks the affordable JLab Go Air for £19.99. Despite the much cheaper price, these have a combined playtime of up to 24-hours. And similar to Apple AirPods, users can connect to an individual earbud, if they only want to wear one at a particular time, using the Dual Connect feature.
