After Karnataka HC rap, transport staff suspend stir till Aug 7
While the impact of the strike was limited in Bengaluru, passengers in other districts were severely affected. Nearly 50% of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), North Western Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) and Kalyana-Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) bus services were affected by the strike.
Respective district administrations and regional transport offices arranged private vehicles across the state. Security was beefed up at major bus stands. No untoward incidents were reported across the state, except stone throwing on KSRTC buses at Hubballi and Kolar. Two masked men on a motorbike followed a KSRTC bus, which was heading from Hubballi to Hosapete with nearly 25 passengers, and threw stones at it.
As Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus services were disrupted during the first half of the day, autos allegedly fleeced customers. People who couldn't miss their hospital visits and check-ups said they had to pay through their nose for the ride. Some office-goers said they took the Metro, while Bengaluru saw increased traffic during peak hours as many took out their vehicles.
Those heading to the Kempegowda International Airport said the fares of taxis were higher than normal.

While private buses were deployed to assist stranded passengers at the Kempegowda Bus Station (Majestic), by 10.30 am, there were hardly any passengers, rendering the effort largely ineffective. Frustrated by the low turnout, private bus drivers said, 'This is a day of income gone down the drain for us.'
KSRTC Staff and Workers' Federation president HV Anantha Subbarao announced around 4 pm that the strike is being suspended temporarily till August 7 and requested the employees to immediately report to duty, after which the services gradually returned to normal.

Police foil cattle theft bid near Hejamady
Udupi: In an operation near Hejamady tollgate, Gangolli police foiled an alleged cattle theft and slaughter attempt that turned violent. Acting on a tip-off, officers intercepted a brown SUV carrying five to six cattle. The suspects allegedly tried to run over police personnel in a bid to escape, injuring two personnel and damaging public property, before abandoning the vehicle and cattle in Ullal. One accused was arrested on the spot, while three others fled. Basavaraj Kanashetti, sub-inspector, Gangolli police station, was assigned cattle trafficking duty. On the night of Aug 4, he and his staff, along with PSI Pavan Nayak and his team in another vehicle, acted on credible information that the suspects arrived in a brown SUV that was going towards Udupi to steal cattle. It was later confirmed that after moving through Kundapur, Udupi, and Kaup, the suspects stole cattle near Hejamady, and were transporting them from Padubidri towards Mangaluru. PSI Kanashetti stationed the police vehicle near Hejamady tollgate to intercept them. Around 5.20 am on Aug 5, officers spotted a KSRTC bus in lane No. 3, behind which was a car, and behind that, the suspected SUV. Inside were four persons, including the driver, with five to six cattle tied inside. While the vehicle was being checked, one suspect in the rear seat allegedly told the driver not to spare the police. The driver then accelerated towards the officers, allegedly with intent to kill. PSI Kanashetti dodged but suffered a hand injury when the vehicle approached him. Unable to move forward due to traffic, the driver reversed, hitting police constable Sandeep and injuring his right shoulder and little finger, before colliding with a toll patrol vehicle, which in turn hit PSI Nayak's car. The driver was pulled out and secured, but another suspect took the wheel, rammed into a car in the toll queue, and fled. The driver was identified as Mohammad Sharoz from Suratkal, while those who escaped were Safwan and Azeem from Kaup, and Raziq from Bajpe. The accused are suspected of stealing cattle to slaughter them illegally and sell the meat. A case has been registered at Padubidri police station under various provisions of the BNS, the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, IMV Act, and the KPDL Act. Ruckus at petrol pump over ‘layoffs'
1 2 Kolkata: The alleged sacking of some employees from a petrol pump by the facility's owner at Phoolbagan last month led to a ruckus on Tuesday afternoon. A local office-bearer of the TMC-affiliated labour union, Kavita Gupta, was accused of barging into the petrol pump with its former employees, who were removed from their jobs, and assaulting Sumana Das Roy, the owner. The former staffers allegedly misbehaved with Roy's daughter. When the pump employees intervened, the accused INTTUC leader and her group allegedly attacked them as well. Declining any wrongdoing, Gupta claimed she only protested against derogatory remarks made by Roy. Both parties filed written complaints at the Phoolbagan Police Station. In June, these employees had staged a protest with several demands, leading to 14 of them allegedly leaving their jobs. The employees, though, claimed that they were sacked. Police said some demands, including hike in salaries, were met, but the employees did not withdraw their protest as their PF was not being paid. The PF dispute lead to a case at the high court, cops added. The owner apparently hired new employees. Gupta claimed the removal of old staffers was unjust. Probe is on. Cops have detained three.
