Warning against swimming after sewage spill
Swimmers are being urged to avoid using a beach in Kent due to "pollution from sewage".
The alert at Sandgate Beach, near Folkestone, is expected to last until 24 May, according to the Environment Agency (EA).
Sandgate and West Folkestone ward councillor Tim Prater said a drain near The Sandgate Hotel "seems to be discharging sewage onto the beach".
But Southern Water said a damaged sewer pipe caused the spill, and the discharge had "not affected bathing water quality."
"The discharge from the surface water outfall has not entered the sea," it said.
The water company added that the incident was reported on Wednesday and it immediately sent teams to the Esplanade.
It has since "introduced a series of measures to protect the local environment, including tankers to control flows through the area".
Councillor Prater says the anti-swimming advisory could be lifted sooner than forecast.
Folkestone and Hythe District Council confirmed the EA and Southern Water were "working to fix" the sewage leak and that signage was being installed at the site.
The EA's most recent water quality classification for Sandgate was "excellent", based on samples it took between 2021 and 2024.

Canadian wildfire smoke engulfs Michigan's Mackinac Bridge, causing it to disappear
It's not Halloween, but it looks straight out of a horror movie: The Mackinac Bridge looked like it disappeared into some scary-looking fog Wednesday afternoon. "Unfortunately, what you're seeing today is not fog surrounding the @mackinacbridge but smoke coming from the wildfires and our neighbors to the North," the Mackinac Bridge Authority posted on X on Wednesday. For days, skies in Michigan have been a dull, chalky near-white. The smoke from some 77 out-of-control wildfires in Canada has been dominating the skies over the state. The level of air quality degradation varies from year to year — 2023 was a particularly bad year for wildfire smoke over Michigan. Last year, not so much. In 2025, the smoke has returned. The view from the bridge Thursday, June 5, is a bit clearer, but you can still see the smoke from the fires. England's Reservoirs Drop Further After Driest Spring Since 1893
Reservoir levels across England fell far below the norm as the driest spring in more than a century raises further concerns about water supplies ahead of summer. Reservoirs were 77% full at the end of May compared with the long-term average of 93%, the UK's Environment Agency said. This spring was the UK's sunniest and warmest on record, and England's driest March-May period since 1893, the agency said. While wetter conditions have since provided some relief, it's unlikely to plug the deficit as extreme heat and more dry weather looms.
