Yasmim brace sends Brazil into Copa America semis with 4-1 win over Paraguay
Yasmim opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a curling free kick that nestled inside the far post and she doubled Brazil's lead 12 minutes later with an almost identical effort, catching the Paraguayan keeper off guard once again.
Brazil goalkeeper Lorena produced a superb save to deny a long-range strike from Claudia Martinez before Paraguay's Camila Arrieta was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on captain Marta.
Brazil made their numerical advantage count with Amanda Gutierres making it 3-0 on the hour mark but a lapse in defence allowed Paraguay to pull one back in the 65th minute through the tournament's leading scorer Martinez, who notched her fifth goal of the competition.
However, any hopes of a comeback were short-lived as Duda Sampaio restored Brazil's three-goal lead with a composed finish in the 75th minute.
'I'm very happy for the goals but above all for the result and for the victory,' Yasmim said at the Estadio Gonzalo Pozo Ripalda.
'We are very happy for the qualification to the semis. We have many aspects that we know we can improve. We have to keep working and giving our all for this shirt.'
Brazil remain unbeaten in Group B and will face Colombia in their final group-stage fixture on Friday - a rematch of the previous edition's final.
'Colombia are a very strong team, we know it will be difficult,' Yasmim added.
'This match is like a derby, we have to prepare ourselves in the best way to face them.' — AFP

'Bayer 04 Leverkusen have extended the contract with Czech international Patrik Schick. The striker has signed a contract to 30 June 2030,' the club said in a statement on their website. Schick, 29, was an integral part of Leverkusen's unbeaten German domestic double-winning squad in the 2023/24 season. Since joining the Werkself in 2020, Schick has netted 81 times in 168 appearances in all competitions, as well as laying on 12 assists. Under the tutelage of now-departed coach Xabi Alonso, Schick contributed vital goals on numerous occasions as Leverkusen became the first club to win the Bundesliga without losing a match. He also lifted the German Cup and German Super Cup in 2024. 'I want to and will continue to contribute goals, that's my strength. In addition, I'm also looking to being a key part of the rebuild into a new team capable of winning trophies,' said Schick. The forward's decision to extend his contract bucks the trend of departures this summer from the Bundesliga runners-up. Alonso left to coach Real Madrid and has been followed out the door by star playmaker Florian Wirtz, as well as Jeremie Frimpong, Granit Xhaka and Jonathan Tah. 'With the rebuild in the next cycle at Bayer 04 we see Patrik as a motor of development,' said managing director of sport Simon Rolfes. Fourth-tier Gondomar SC have imprinted pictures of Liverpool and Portugal forward Jota and his brother Silva, who played for Portuguese team Panafiel, on the front of their shirts. The top of the back of the shirts bears the two players' names under an infinity symbol. 'More than a jersey, a tribute eternal,' Gondomar SC, who play in the Campeonato de Portugal, said in a social media post. 'Because football is more than victories and goals, it's legacy, it's family, it's love for our land. 'Our new jersey brings in the great image of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, two sons of Gondomar who left us too soon, but who will live forever in the history of our club and our football. 'Every time our athletes put on this jersey, it's like stepping on the field with them.' Liverpool announced last month that their players will wear a 'Forever 20' emblem on their shirts and stadium jackets this Premier League season. After consultation with Jota's family, his No 20 shirt will be retired across all levels of the Anfield club, including the women's and academy teams. Jota and Silva grew up in Gondomar, a town on the outskirts of Porto.

Brazil great Marta forced extra time with a late equaliser and the veteran struck again in the 105th minute to seemingly seal victory. But a resilient Colombia found yet another equaliser to send the encounter to penalties, where Brazil's experience ultimately prevailed. 'I think women's soccer has been growing a lot. I think the trend is for it to be more competitive. Everyone here deserved a match like this. Congratulations to Colombia too,' Brazil's Amanda Gutierres said. 'This means a lot.
