TAMBUNAN: Deputy Chief Minister 1, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan called on the community and the private sector not to look at the shortcomings of special needs children but at their abilities. He said they need to be more proactive in supporting any sports events that are held in the state.
Advertisement 'I see that special needs children are not just a hope but are a source of pride for all of us,' he said when officiating the 13th Sabah School Sports Council (MSSS) Special Education Athletics Championship (KOPK) at the Sports Complex here on Monday. He said the government always supports efforts like this because it believes that every child, including students with special needs, has their own potential to excel in various fields – including sports. Jeffrey, who is also the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, stressed that the government, through its education and human development policies, has never marginalized special children. He said that in the youth development plan, including the State Budget, special allocations are always provided to strengthen special education – including in terms of facilities, teacher training, and personality development programs.
Advertisement 'I also intend to see more programs like this continued and expanded to the national level so that Sabah becomes an example of an inclusive state that leaves no one behind,' he said. He reminded all the athletes who will compete that they are strong-willed warriors because it was not easy for them to get to this point, and they have all already won, they successfully overcame obstacles, constraints and personal challenges. Jeffrey, who is also the Tambunan Assemblyman, said that this tournament is not just a sports event but a symbol of strength, inclusiveness and humanity in the true sense. According to him, this proves that the fighting spirit, perseverance and determination of children with special needs should never be underestimated. He hopes that more parties will open up spaces and opportunities for special children to continue to shine. A total of 736 special athletes, along with 444 coaches and accompanying officers from all 24 districts in Sabah, participated in this tournament. Also present at the event were the Director of the Sabah Education Department, Datuk Haji Raisin Saidin, Senior Assistant Director of the Special Education Sector of the Sabah Education Department, Hajah Bernadette John, District Education Officer, Dr. Haison Jahudin, District Officer, Sobitun Makajil, District Education Officers and Deputy District Education Officers as well as heads of Sabah and Federal government departments, school principals, headmasters, teachers and parents. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Tambunan glad to host event
Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 By: Gerry Lewis Text Size: Dr Haison said the event was not merely a competitive platform, but a space to uncover talent and recognise the exceptional potential of special education students in sports. TAMBUNAN: The 13th Special Education Athletics Championship (KOPK) organised by MSS Sabah which was held over three days here saw 736 student-athletes with special needs from across the State, accompanied by 444 officials and teacher escorts representing 24 districts, making it one of the largest such events held in Sabah. Tambunan District Education Officer Dr Haison Jahudin said the event was not merely a competitive platform, but a space to uncover talent and recognise the exceptional potential of special education students in sports. Advertisement Special recognition was given to Tambunan's Special Education Integration Programme (PPKI), which played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth running of the event, alongside the supporting efforts of student assistants and the wider community. The championship also served as a platform to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Tambunan's special needs athletes who have brought pride to the state on both national and international stages. One inspirational figure was Felicia Mikat of Tambunan who began her education at SKPK Pekan Tuaran, continued to SMK Badin and later enrolled at the Malaysia Sports School Sabah. Between 2013 and 2017, she secured three gold medals in the National Schools Sports Championship in the 100m, 200m and long jump events. In 2017, Felicia brought home three bronze medals at the Asean Para Games in Kuala Lumpur in the 100m, 200m and 400m events. She also earned three gold medals in the 2016 and 2018 Para Sukma for the same events. Advertisement Another was Marell Michael from Kampung Timbou, Tambunan, a student of PPKI SMK Nambayan, who has shown that discipline and training can lead to exceptional success. Since competing in the national-level KOPK MSSM in 2022, Marell has collected three gold medals in the 4x100m relay (each year setting new records), three silver medals in the 100m and 200m events and three bronze medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x400m events. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Joyce wins women's open title
Published on: Tuesday, August 05, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 05, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: (From left) Alder, Ricky, Charles, Joyce and Falvia holding the State flag. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Joyce Heng Shu Xia captured the women's open title at the Felda Strongest competition held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur over the weekend. She accumulated a total of 60.5 point from the six routines (yoke walk, tyre flip, river stone, mystery, car deadlift, bus pull) to take home the winning prize, ahead of two Johor representatives Hurun Ain Hasan (56) and Nur Athirah Hee Abdullah (49.5). The 37-year-old Penampang lass, who won her 30th title since joining the sport in 2017 was delighted with the latest victory despite injury to her arm. 'This time the venue was a bit challenging because it was done indoors. The air-conditioning was so cold making warming up quite hard because your body cools down very fast while waiting for your turn to perform. 'As a result, during my second routine (350kg Tyre Flip) I tore my left forearm muscle and was told to stop, but I insisted on competing and managed to complete all six routines,' she said. She expressed her gratitude to her family and friends for all their support on her self-funded trip and added that her next competition is the Sibu Strongest Man & Woman to be held in September. Advertisement Meanwhile, the five-member State contingent also consisted of Charles Khoo, Flavia Manie Luntak, Alder Ferel Ijap and Ricky Aling and returned with two golds and one silver. The other gold medal was won by Charles in the men's Under-105kg and the silver from Flavia in the women's Under-70kg, while Alder and Ricky finished in fifth and 10th place respectively in the men's Under-105kg. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
