Focus on abilities, not shortcomings of special needs kids, says Jeffrey

Published on: Wednesday, August 06, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 06, 2025 By: Johan Aziz Text Size: Jeffrey lighting the tournament torch at the 13th MSSS Special Education Athletics Championship. TAMBUNAN: Deputy Chief Minister 1, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan called on the community and the private sector not to look at the shortcomings of special needs children but at their abilities. He said they need to be more proactive in supporting any sports events that are held in the state. Advertisement 'I see that special needs children are not just a hope but are a source of pride for all of us,' he said when officiating the 13th Sabah School Sports Council (MSSS) Special Education Athletics Championship (KOPK) at the Sports Complex here on Monday. He said the government always supports efforts like this because it believes that every child, including students with special needs, has their own potential to excel in various fields – including sports. Jeffrey, who is also the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, stressed that the government, through its education and human development policies, has never marginalized special children. He said that in the youth development plan, including the State Budget, special allocations are always provided to strengthen special education – including in terms of facilities, teacher training, and personality development programs. Advertisement 'I also intend to see more programs like this continued and expanded to the national level so that Sabah becomes an example of an inclusive state that leaves no one behind,' he said. He reminded all the athletes who will compete that they are strong-willed warriors because it was not easy for them to get to this point, and they have all already won, they successfully overcame obstacles, constraints and personal challenges. Jeffrey, who is also the Tambunan Assemblyman, said that this tournament is not just a sports event but a symbol of strength, inclusiveness and humanity in the true sense. According to him, this proves that the fighting spirit, perseverance and determination of children with special needs should never be underestimated. He hopes that more parties will open up spaces and opportunities for special children to continue to shine. A total of 736 special athletes, along with 444 coaches and accompanying officers from all 24 districts in Sabah, participated in this tournament. Also present at the event were the Director of the Sabah Education Department, Datuk Haji Raisin Saidin, Senior Assistant Director of the Special Education Sector of the Sabah Education Department, Hajah Bernadette John, District Education Officer, Dr. Haison Jahudin, District Officer, Sobitun Makajil, District Education Officers and Deputy District Education Officers as well as heads of Sabah and Federal government departments, school principals, headmasters, teachers and parents. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Published on: Monday, July 21, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 By: Johan Aziz Text Size: 'Warisan will stand on its own. I am confident that this party can govern with the support of the people,' Shafie said, after receiving 800 membership forms, here. KENINGAU: Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal reiterated that his Parti Warisan Sabah will only work with the people and not with other parties in the coming state election. 'Warisan will stand on its own. I am confident that this party can govern with the support of the people,' he said, after receiving 800 membership forms, here. Advertisement He said if two previous Sabah governments managed to rule Sabah for two terms, Warisan can do so, too. 'Parti Jelata Rakyat Sabah (Berjaya) led by Tan Sri Harris Salleh and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) led by Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan could rule for 10 years even though solo previously. 'We need to work with the people, listen to the people. If we join a coalition, our government will have many policies, many plans, many implementations that will depend on the needs of the coalition, not the needs of the people. Shafie said based on his experience, coalitions do not last long. He also said Warisan would continue to struggle for adherence to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) if the party is given the mandate. He claimed that Warisan was the first to bring the MA63 issue to Parliament in 2019 through the late VK Liew to change what is contained in article 2 and article 1 regarding the position of Sabah and Sarawak. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Keningau students wins Ocean Conservation Creative Contest

Published on: Monday, June 30, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 30, 2025 By: Johan Aziz Text Size: Keningau Students Won Ocean Conservation Creative Competition. KENINGAU: A team of Cosmetology students from Keningau Vocational College (KVC) has been chosen as the champion of the handicraft category in the 2025 International Ocean Conservation Creative Competition for the youth age group. The results of the competition, organised by the International Youth and Children's Education Association, were officially announced on June 13 this year on its website. The team consists of three final-year students: Bevanny Adelia Benedict, Annyss Anastacia Francis George and Nur Nadia Natasya Ahmad Zainul Ariffin. Their project is a stool chair made from recycled materials designed to allow beauticians to perform pedicures outdoors. The bench chair was made from plastic bottles filled with old newspapers and plastic bags, tightly bound and reinforced with discarded items such as wood panels, wires, and used clothing. The stool also includes a compartment for storing tools required for foot treatments. They named the chair 'Elegant Throne' to symbolise the importance of creativity and aesthetic elements in creating practical products using recycled materials. The project's concept aligned with the theme of the competition, which is ocean conservation, as plastic waste is one of the main threats to marine life in saltwater and to animals that rely on ocean habitats. The team leader, Bevanny Adelia, stated that the project has the potential to become a social enterprise that can have a positive impact on the environment and the community. The college director, Lumang anak Lang, expressed immense pride in the students' achievement, noting that the project not only required creativity but also needed to be designed with careful consideration of the materials used, specifically waste materials. He emphasised that vocational college education always prioritises the application of vocational skills and knowledge in innovation. Their competition video can be accessed at:
