SK Hynix unveils 321-layer UFS 4.1 that is faster, thinner and more efficient than the previous gen
Memory maker SK hynix has announced the world's first 321-layer UFS 4.1 TLC NAND flash for smartphones. It's faster, more efficient and thinner to boot – perfect for the next generation of phones that will focus on slim builds and AI tools, says the company.
Compared to the previous generation (which used a 238-layer design) from 2022, these new storage chips have 15% higher random read and 40% higher random write speeds. For sequential reads, they max out the interface at 4.3GB/s.
On top of that, the NAND package is 0.85mm thick, down from 1mm. It doesn't sound like much, but every little bit helps if phones like the Galaxy S25 Edge become popular.
Recent trends aside, the new 321-layer UFS 4.1 design is 7% more power efficient than the previous generation – less heat and more performance are always on trend.
SK hynix says that the sequential read speed will improve on-device AI performance (since it will speed up loading the model to RAM), while the improved random performance will boost multitasking.
The company will produce storage in two capacities – 512GB and 1TB. That's right, there isn't going to be a 256GB variant, so this will be something to look out for when choosing your next phone (like how 128GB models use UFS 3.1 now).
That is a problem for next year, though – SK hynix says that it expects to win orders from smartphone makers this year and to start shipping in volume in the first three months of next year.
It's not just smartphones, though, the company is also working on 321-layer designs for SSDs for consumers and data centers.

OnePlus 13s in for review
Today we have with us the OnePlus 13s. While we can't share all the details yet, we can show off the exterior and talk about some of the features of this upcoming device. The first thing we should say is that this is not the retail packaging. The fancy black box is just for showing on camera but if you place an order for the phone you'll just be getting the red box you see inside. The OnePlus 13s will come in three colors, black, green, and pink that we have here. The green model is exclusive to India while the pink makes the 13s the first OnePlus phone to ship in this color. On the side of the phone is the new Plus Key, which replaces the Alert slider on previous OnePlus flagships. This key can be assigned to various functions, including AI Plus Mind which captures and collates information on the screen within a new app called Mind Space that is part of the new OnePlus AI feature set. The 13s runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset with a sizable internal cooling system. The phone features a 32MP front-facing camera with autofocus, a first for a OnePlus phone. There's also 5.5G networking and an independent Wi-Fi chipset. All of this is packed into a compact body with a 6.32-inch display. We will have a lot more to share when the phone gets officially launched on June 5. Until then, you can check out some camera samples from the phone.

Honor Magic V5 battery capacity could increase 20%
Honor is expected to launch Magic V5 soon, and the device was already certified at CMIIT. The phone with model number MHB-AN10 has a minimal 5,950 mAh battery capacity, which, according to tipsters, translates to a typical 6,100 mAh battery capacity. If this is really the case, the Magic V5 will get an almost 20% bigger battery than its predecessor, which was already extremely thin and powerful. The rumor comes from a post about the vivo X Fold5, which is rumored to sport a 6,000 mAh dual-cell. The leakster, who is usually on point with such rumors, replied in comments that the Magic V5 will have a 100 mAh bigger battery than the vivo's. The increased battery is not a surprise, as many smartphone companies in China follow the trend of Si/Ca cells, which provide more power in less volume. We also heard that the device will be under 9 mm thin, when folded; another improvement over the Magic V3, which was 9.2 mm. Honor Magic V3 We are still waiting for anything official from Honor, so for now, anything on the Magic V5 is treated as a wishful rumor. Source (in Chinese) | Via

It's like Verizon is trying to lose customers
Verizon has a problem: it's losing customers at an incredible rate, and it's trying to fix its problems in ways that further drive its users away. After T-Mobile's recent controversies with the price hikes and the T-Life app, you'd think that this is the perfect time for Verizon to swoop in and snatch some customers online forums are filled with complaints against the company, and it's not hard to see why. For example, Verizon customers are finding charges on their bills that they never asked for. This may be due to representatives trying to earn an extra commission, but it's likely a result of Verizon's AI tools that even its own employees dislike. Verizon has an expansive network across the States. | Image credit — PhoneArena A while ago, I mentioned that Verizon is having a pricing crisis. Looking at what the company's customers are seeing every day, it truly feels like there is a lot of mismanagement going on over at Verizon . While some customers are being offered killer discounts, others are arbitrarily picked for price hikes that make them consider alternatives. As far as the company's users have been able to tell, there is no rhyme or reason to these discounts and price people's best guess is that Verizon randomly offers discounts to retain existing customers. There's very likely some truth to this, as we've seen the carrier offer pretty good deals to people who told customer service that they were thinking of switching to another there has to be a better way to go about trying to keep your user base. Verizon is trying everything it can think of. | Image credit — Verizon Both T-Mobile and AT&T — Verizon 's largest competitors — are performing better. Verizon 's strategy of offering steep discounts often works, and users say that they'll stick around for the time being simply because of how cheap it is. However, it's still not enough to maintain growth. Verizon 's aforementioned AI tools are another way that the company is experimenting with streamlining its services. These tools are supposed to help its employees speed up their work, and provide better service to Verizon 's customers. Except, said employees have to constantly battle these tools just to be able to do their job without being hindered. And now we have almost concrete evidence that these tools have directly contributed to inflated bills: a surefire way to drive customers away. Anecdotal reports from Verizon representatives only corroborate the claim that these tools add extras to a user's bill without asking anyone first. There's a reason so many people still stick with Verizon : it has extensive coverage across the U.S. and usually provides awesome service. Verizon is also partnering with AST SpaceMobile to bring satellite cell service to its users in dead zones, which is an excellent initiative. However, what the company has been doing recently is, in my opinion, a recipe for guaranteed disaster. Verizon is already losing hundreds of thousands of users to its rivals. It's time for the company to get its act straight and devise a concrete plan of action. To continue to do nothing except half-hearted attempts at solving non-existent problems is to give T-Mobile and AT&T victory on a silver platter. If I were someone high up at Verizon , the first thing I'd do would be to make discounts and price hikes make sense for the average customer. Be completely transparent about why someone might be seeing their bill go up. Second, prioritize customer service so that both employees and customers leave satisfied instead of enraged. Yeah, that's easier said than done, and T-Mobile has messed up in that department too. But that's all the more reason for Verizon to get its act together and step up when it has a golden opportunity to do so. Else, it's basically trying to lose customers.
