Energy sector taps AI to address intermittency, streamline operations and manage rising demand

New Delhi: As India accelerates its shift towards clean and intelligent energy systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a defining force across the energy value chain. From grid automation and predictive maintenance in renewables to operational efficiency in oil and gas, energy companies are integrating AI to reshape how power is generated, distributed, and consumed.
Sanjay Gupta, CEO, Apollo Green Energy Limited, said, 'AI is fast becoming the brain of the modern energy system, it's can strategically & radically alter the way we generate, manage, and consume power. It enables real-time fault detection, adaptive grid management, and far more accurate forecasting of renewables like solar and wind, which were once traditionally hard to predict. This increases grid stability and helps to reduce curtailment.'
Gupta said that AI enables smart meters and home automation systems to lower consumption during peak hours, helping reduce costs and ease grid load. 'By intelligentially coordinating distributed energy resources including rooftop solar, EVs, and battery storage, AI is also addressing one of the biggest challenges facing the renewable energy sector - intermittency. But the deeper opportunity lies ahead,' he said.
'With data centres projected to consume 945 TWh of electricity globally by 2030, AI must also help balance this rise through intelligent storage, dynamic pricing, and decentralised energy orchestration. In India, where grid complexity and renewable growth are accelerating, AI offers a chance to leapfrog legacy challenges and build predictive, self-optimizing systems. This change is cognitive, not just digital. And it could be the most defining transformation in energy this decade,' Gupta added.
In the hydrocarbons sector, companies are deploying AI to improve exploration and production processes.

'These technologies allow us to monitor real-time data, equipment performance, and reservoir conditions, helping make data-driven decisions, reduce costs and ensure sustainable operations. Adoption of battery-based IIoT sensors provide early detection of equipment degradation, allowing proactive maintenance to prevent costly unplanned shutdowns. Through pilot implementation, sensors were installed on 25 critical assets, leading to savings of ~USD 40,000 in unplanned maintenance costs,' Gupta said.
He added that Cairn has deployed IIoT-based steam trap devices across its oil facility in Rajasthan, helping visualise data and automate alerts, leading to greenhouse gas emissions savings of 47 tons of CO2. 'Similarly, through Project Digital Twin, we created a replica of our physical assets resulting in 30 per cent reduction in flaring and minimised environmental impact, in our Rajasthan and Gujarat locations.'
'To foster a safe working environment for employees and business partners, we implemented an AI-based Safety Surveillance Monitoring System with AI cameras at strategic locations, resulting in an 80 per cent reduction of manual efforts, over 7000 observations, and enhanced safety trajectories. Our goal is to integrate technology and digitalisation into other operational spheres for continued and enhanced precision, increased performance, and safety to support our overarching goals for sustainable development while creating long-term value for all stakeholders,' he said.

With India's energy landscape becoming increasingly complex and digital, companies are placing AI at the centre of their growth and operational strategies to manage intermittency, enable predictive systems and reduce environmental impact.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 3rd Greenfield Unit and Sri Rama Temple built by Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited in Belur Industrial Area in Dharwad, Joshi highlighted India's unprecedented growth in manufacturing under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and its emergence as a self-reliant nation across sectors and its potential to become the world's third-largest producer, surpassing challenges faced in 2014. 'India will transform into a global manufacturing hub in the future, as it has a supportive environment, resources and an empowered youth that is required for the manufacturing sector,' the Union Minister stated. 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is achieving unprecedented growth in the manufacturing sector today. India today is self-reliant in everything from industry, jobs, education, information technology, transport, and electricity. The import situation that existed in 2014 is no longer there. It is developing as the largest exporting country in the world. Until now, China and Vietnam were the only leading producing countries in the world. Now, India has also joined that list and will emerge as the 3rd largest producer,' he added. Joshi noted the global demand for Indian talent, particularly in Germany, as the country leverages its vibrant youth and resources. 'Today, there is a high demand for Indian youth all over the world, including Germany. Due to the shortage of loyal, educationally qualified employees and technicians, foreign countries are turning to India. India has amazing opportunities in every way, including its vibrant and dynamic youth, resources, and environment, and locals should also take advantage of this,' he stated. Abhijit Khanvilkar, Director of Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited, highlighted local opportunities, stating, 'Skilled human resources were available in Dharwad, but not enough job opportunities were available. We initially set up a unit in Dharwad, which has grown to three units, creating job opportunities for up to 500 persons.' Following the inauguration of the greenfield unit, Joshi also inaugurated the Lord Sri Rama Temple there. Earlier, NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam had said that India's manufacturing sector must grow 15 per cent annually to contribute at least 25 per cent to the country's GDP (or USD 7.5 trillion) through Viksit Bharat 2047. According to Joshi, the greenfield unit would help boost industrial growth in the region of North Karnataka and contribute to local employment generation and economic growth. In a post on X, Johsi added that Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited was committed to sustainability and has inaugurated a 155 kWp rooftop solar power plant at its Pune unit, aimed at reducing the company's carbon footprint. He noted that the Dharwad unit had also adopted eco-friendly measures. 'Moments from the inauguration of the Lord Sri Ram Temple and its third greenfield unit built by Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited at Belur Industrial Area, Dharwad, today. This greenfield unit in Dharwad will boost industrial growth in North Karnataka. It will contribute to local employment generation and economic growth. Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited is committed to sustainability and has inaugurated a 155 kWp rooftop solar power plant at its Pune unit. This will promote the use of renewable energy with the aim of reducing the company's carbon footprint. The Dharwad unit has also adopted such eco-friendly measures and has ISO 14001 Environmental Management Certification,' Joshi stated in a post on X. Kathmandu [Nepal], June 8 (ANI): The foundation stone for the construction of a hostel building and canteen block for Shree Dibya Deep Secondary School at Lomanthang Rural Municipality in Nepal's Mustang to be built under Indian aid was laid on Sunday. As per a release from the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, the foundation stone was jointly laid by Prasanna Shrivastava, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India, Kathmandu and Tasi Nharbu Gurung, Chairman, Lomanthang Rural Municipality, Mustang. 'The hostel building and canteen block for Shree Dibya Deep Secondary School is being built with the Government of India's financial assistance at the project cost of NRs. 37.60 million under 'Nepal-India Development Cooperation',' the Indian Embassy in Nepal stated in a release. The Government of India's grant under 'Nepal-India Development Cooperation' is being utilised for the construction of a hostel building with a toilet, bathrooms, a kitchen block with a dining hall, rest rooms and other allied facilities, according to the release. The project is being taken up as a High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) and is being implemented through Lomanthang Rural Municipality, Mustang. Shree Dibya Deep Secondary School is the only high school in Upper Mustang. It caters to children living in Loghekar Damodar Kunda Rural Municipality and Lomanthang Rural Municipality. The school seeks to provide quality education through experienced and motivated teachers, according to the release. On the occasion, Prasanna Shrivastava, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India in Nepal, expressed happiness over 'the growth, expansion and diversification of India-Nepal development partnership over the years.' He reiterated the Government of India's commitment towards further deepening and strengthening this partnership-based on the priorities of the Government and people of Nepal. The Chairman, Lomanthang Rural Municipality, Mustang, political representatives, Chairperson, School Management and other stakeholders appreciated the developmental support being provided by the Indian government to the people of Nepal. They expressed confidence that the infrastructure being created would help create a better learning environment for the students of Shree Dibya Deep Secondary School in Mustang. As part of his ongoing visit to Mustang, the Deputy Chief of Mission also visited the Lowo Nyiphug Namdrol Norbuling Monastic School in Lomanthang, Mustang. The dormitory building of this Monastic School is currently being built with the Government of India's financial assistance at a project cost of NRs. 41.40 million as an HICDP. Since 2003, the Government of India has undertaken 573 HICDPs in Nepal in various sectors, including education, health, road and bridges, river training, drinking water, electrification, agriculture, culture and social welfare. These projects are spread across the seven provinces of Nepal. Out of 573 projects, 59 projects are in Gandaki Province, including 17 projects in Mustang. In addition to these, the Government of India has also gifted 1009 ambulances and 300 school buses to various hospitals, health posts and educational institutions in Nepal to date. Out of these, 119 ambulances and 40 school buses have been gifted to various institutions in Gandaki province, including 11 ambulances and five school buses in Mustang. These vehicles are helping enhance accessibility to education and health services in the region. In a press release, the Indian Embassy in Nepal stated, 'As close neighbours, India and Nepal are engaged in wide-ranging and multi-sectoral cooperation. The implementation of HICDPs reflects the continued support of the Government of India in bolstering the efforts of the Government of Nepal in the growth and development of its people by augmenting infrastructure in priority sectors.' Issac Paul Olakkengil was a skilled civil engineer specializing in Building Information Modelling, working in the UAE since 2019 Issac Paul Olakkengil, a 29-year-old civil engineer from Kerala, India, died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a scuba diving training session at Dubai's Jumeirah Beach on Friday, June 6. The tragic incident unfolded while Issac was on vacation with his wife and younger brother, partaking in the Eid Al Adha holidays. The news of his untimely death has sent shockwaves through the Indian expatriate community in the UAE, where Issac had built a thriving professional life. A life built on precision, passion, and progress Issac hailed from Naduvilangadi in Thrissur, Kerala. A driven and accomplished engineer, he specialized in Building Information Modelling (BIM), a sophisticated digital process essential in modern construction. After completing a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Calicut University in 2016, he steadily climbed the professional ladder. He first gained experience in India, including a stint with Indian Railways, before moving to the UAE in 2019. There, he worked with prominent firms such as Omnix International, Aspen Creations, and most recently as a BIM Coordinator at PNC Architects in Dubai, a role he held since May 2022. Issac's expertise spanned tools like Revit Architecture, Navisworks, AutoCAD, and Enscape, and he was certified in BIM Technology and BIM Coordination. He was fluent in English, Hindi, and Malayalam, and his colleagues and peers admired his methodical nature and professional diligence. A family of engineers, bound by love and shared ambitions Engineering ran in the family. Issac's wife, Reshma Olakkengil, is also an engineer based in Dubai. His younger brother, Ivin Olakkengil, lives and works as an engineer in Abu Dhabi. The three shared a close bond, not only familial but also intellectual and professional. All three were part of the same scuba diving training session at Jumeirah Beach when the incident occurred. According to David Pyarilos, Issac's uncle, who is currently supporting the family with legal procedures and the repatriation of the body to India, 'It seems they were getting trained for scuba diving, and apparently, he [Issac] couldn't breathe properly and moved away from the pack.' 'So, everyone panicked and was impacted underwater. I was told Reshma was rescued to the shore first, followed by the other two,' Mr Pyarilos told the press. Issac was rushed to the hospital, but despite resuscitation efforts, he could not be saved. His brother Ivin collapsed upon reaching the hospital, overwhelmed by the event. He was placed under observation and later declared out of danger. Mr Pyarilos added, 'Ivin's friends just told me they are concerned about breaking this heart-wrenching news to him, as the brothers shared a strong bond.' According to Khaleej Times, Ivin was only informed of his brother's death on Saturday, June 7. An ongoing investigation Dubai police have since launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities have seized the scuba diving equipment used during the session for analysis, as part of standard safety and procedural checks. The training was conducted in a designated diving area at Jumeirah Beach, popular among beginners and tourists. The family is now focused on completing the necessary legal formalities for the repatriation of Issac's body to India, a process being handled with the assistance of Mr Pyarilos. The UAE's Indian community, especially in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, has expressed condolences, remembering Issac as a hardworking, soft-spoken professional who had earned respect in his field and among his peers. While the incident has been reported widely, it is the story of the man behind the headlines, a committed husband, brother, and engineer, that resonates most.
