Penang governor urges Putrajaya to fund Pan Island Link 1 project for improved traffic management
GEORGE TOWN, May 16 — The Penang Yang diPertua Negri, Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, has urged Putrajaya to approve funding for the state's Pan Island Link 1 (PIL1) project under the 13th Malaysian Plan.
He said the state government has applied for funding for the project under the first rolling plan of the 13th Malaysian Plan, and the application is currently under consideration.
'I wish to call on the federal government to give consideration to PIL1 as this project is expected to give a positive impact in terms of traffic management and dispersal in Penang,' he said in his speech at the state legislative assembly today.
He expressed gratitude to the federal government for its financial support for other mega projects in Penang, including the Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway, the Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, the Sungai Perak-Penang water project, and the expansion of the Penang International Airport (PIA).
'Besides that, I was made to understand that the Silicon Island project, which started on September 22, 2023, has shown positive developments,' he said.
As of April 25 this year, a total of 150 acres have been reclaimed, he said.
'With a targeted overall reclamation of 2,300 acres, this project is now 6.5 per cent complete,' he said.
He added that the project will bolster Penang's position as one of the nation's main economic drivers and its role in the country's development.
Penang's economy recorded a growth of 3.3 per cent in 2023, with a gross domestic product (GDP) of RM116 billion.
'This achievement is supported by two main sectors: the services sector (48 per cent) and the manufacturing sector (46.5 per cent),' he said.
Penang has remained one of the six main contributors to 73 per cent of the national GDP.
'Penang also recorded the highest GDP per capita at RM72,586,' he said.
In international trade, he said Penang recorded a total trade volume of RM788.1 billion in 2024, an 11.6 per cent increase compared to RM696.7 billion in the previous year.
The state has also continued to uphold and promote Islamic values, he said, citing the development of the KITAB Smart City Campus in Bandar Cassia, Batu Kawan.
'This is a large project that will bring about long-lasting impact,' he said.
The project, located on 17.3 acres of wakaf land, includes the construction of a mosque and Islamic centre, a commercial centre, student accommodations, and Kolej Islam Teknologi Antarabangsa Pulau Pinang (KITAB).
On the state's water supply system, he said the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has invested RM1.185 billion in its Water Contingency Plan 2030 to meet increasing water demands by 2030.
'The long-term plan is the Sungai Perak treated water transfer project, which will meet water demands until 2050,' he said.
He noted that the project would benefit Penang and northern Perak through the Taman Perindustrian Hijau Bersepadu Kerian (KIGIP).
Two new bills, the Penang Water Resources Board Bill 2024 and the Penang Water Resources Bill 2025, will be tabled at this sitting of the state legislative assembly, he said.
The aim of the bills, he added, is to strengthen the state's water resource management through the establishment of the Penang Water Resources Board.

Immigration Department denies issuing viral statement on Qurban meat distribution
KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 — The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) has denied issuing any statement regarding guidelines for the distribution of 'Qurban' (sacrificial) meat at mosques in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration. JIM Deputy Director-General (Management) Ismail Mokhtar said the department was aware of the statement, dated June 5, 2025, that had gone viral. 'For the record, the statement is false and has never been issued by JIM,' he said in a statement here today. He also advised the public to always refer to the department's official channels for accurate and authentic information. 'JIM takes the dissemination of false information seriously, especially when it can lead to public confusion. Any unauthorised use of the department's official emblem and name is an offence and may be subject to legal action,' he added. The fake statement, dated June 5, 2025, that went viral, used the name of Immigration Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban. Among the things claimed in the statement was that only foreign nationals with valid work permits and visas, or those with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards, were allowed to receive Qurban meat at mosques. It also said that illegal immigrants who collected the meat would face immediate action. — Bernama

Govt denies blocking MTUC from ILC participation, cites internal dispute
The human resources ministry has urged MTUC to expedite its re-election to restore stability to the trade union movement and ensure Malaysia's full participation in the ILC next year. (File pic) PETALING JAYA : The human resources ministry has dismissed claims that the government blocked the participation of labour representatives to the now-concluded 2025 International Labour Conference (ILC). The ministry said the non-representation of workers at the conference held in Geneva was caused by the absence of legitimate leadership in the Malaysian Trade Unions Congress (MTUC), the country's largest trade union umbrella organisation. 'In February, the Court of Appeal ordered MTUC to conduct a re-election of its leadership within 90 days under the watch of a joint special committee,' it said in a statement today. 'This election was later postponed to August, leaving MTUC without a legitimate leadership to represent workers in any official platform.' The ministry stressed that the selection of the Malaysian delegation to the ILC was made transparently under the guidelines of the International Labour Organization, after seeking advice from the Attorney-General's Chambers. It also urged MTUC to expedite its re-election to restore stability to the trade union movement and ensure Malaysia's full participation in the ILC next year. On June 4, Malaysiakini reported that the joint special committee's chairman, J Solomon, denied knowledge of needing to hold an election within three months of the committee's formation. He had earlier criticised the government for failing to register labour delegates for the ILC.

Issues over Petros nothing to do with Petronas layoffs, says Fadillah
Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said Petronas is relooking its entire operation because of the decline in crude oil prices. KUCHING : Petroliam Nasional Bhd's (Petronas) move to trim its workforce stems from global challenges and is not connected to the national oil firm's issues with Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros). Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said Petronas's restructuring plan is necessary amid the decline in crude oil prices. He said he plans to meet with the company to get more details of the exercise. 'That (the decline in crude oil prices) is why Petronas has to relook its entire operation. I'm planning a meeting with them to get a briefing on the matter and to ensure that the number of layoffs can be reduced, if not avoided,' he told reporters attending the Aidiladha sacrificial event at Taman Hussein Mosque here today. On June 5, Petronas president and CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz said the national oil firm is cutting 10% of its workforce to cope with challenging operating conditions, particularly because of falling crude prices. He said the number of staff involved in the downsizing process stands at about 5,000, and those affected will be notified in stages next year. On May 21, the federal and state governments reached an understanding on matters involving Petronas and Petros. According to the joint declaration, Petronas will continue its functions, activities, responsibilities and obligations entrusted to the company in Malaysia under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 and its regulations. Any agreements and arrangements between Petronas and its subsidiaries with third parties for the purpose of liquefied natural gas sales from upstream operations through to LNG exports to foreign parties remain unaffected. A media statement by the Prime Minister's Office following the joint declaration said all relevant federal and state laws relating to gas distribution in Sarawak are to co-exist and be respected by all parties.
