Flooded Escape Tunnels Trapped Pahalgam Killers. Forces Hunted Them Down

NDTV5 days ago
New Delhi:
An all-nighter by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, scientists working through the night, a special plane from Srinagar to Chandigarh, and test-firing to match bullet casings -- it took all of this to confirm that the three terrorists killed in Operation Mahadev near Srinagar Monday were the same monsters who murdered 26 innocents in cold blood in Pahalgam's Baisaran Valley on April 22.
According to sources in the government, the Home Minister wanted to be sure before informing the Parliament that the three terrorists killed in Operation Mahadev are the ones involved in the Pahalgam attack. He was up through Monday night and constantly monitored the developments at the Chandigarh Forensic Science Laboratory over phone and video calls as scientists matched bullet casings and guns recovered after Operation Mahadev. Sources said the Home Minister was up till 5 am, communicating with scientists for a confirmation, and rested for a few hours before heading to Parliament for the big day.
Addressing the Lok Sabha during the Operation Sindoor debate yesterday, Mr Shah said, "There is no room for doubt. I am holding the ballistic report, six scientists have cross-checked it and confirmed to me over video call that the bullets fired at Pahalgam and the bullets fired from these guns are a 100 per cent match."
Operation Mahadev: 3 Terrorists Gunned Down
As Defence Minister Rajnath Singh began the debate on Operation Sindoor in Parliament on Monday, an encounter was underway at Lidwas near Srinagar. A joint team of the Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir police had zeroed in on a hideout after weeks of constantly intercepting terrorists' communication. In the gunfight that followed, three terrorists were gunned down and sophisticated weapons such as assault rifles and rifle grenades were recovered.
The forces suspected that these three terrorists were the Pahalgam killers, but the government wanted to leave no room for doubt before it went public. So, while multiple media reports linked Operation Mahadev to the Pahalgam attack, no official confirmation came through.
A Perfect Match
Security forces had earlier arrested some local residents on charges of assisting the terrorists. They were brought in for the identification of the bodies of the three killed in Lidwas. They confirmed that the terrorists killed in Mahadev were the killers of Pahalgam. But this was not enough. The government insisted on a foolproof match.
The terrorists' weapons recovered after Operation Mahadev were then flown to Chandigarh on a special plane. An Air Force cargo plane flew a machine from Ahmedabad to Chandigarh. At the Chandigarh forensic lab, shots were fired from the weapons recovered. The empty bullet casings, generated after the test firing, were then matched with the casings recovered from Baisaran Valley after the attack. It was a 99 per cent match, according to sources.
During this entire process, the Home Minister was constantly in touch with the scientists till the final report was ready and sent to him, the sources added.
Guns Never Fired After Pahalgam
During the matching experiments, Home Minister Shah was told that the last time the terrorists' guns -- an M9 and two AK-47s -- were fired was during the Pahalgam attack. For three months, the terrorists Suleiman, Afghani and Jibran -- were in hiding. All of them Pakistani nationals, they could not return because of the security forces' strategy to prevent their escape.
According to sources, the home minister and security hawks chalked out this strategy when he flew to Kashmir hours after the Pahalgam attack. Mr Shah, sources said, had made it clear to the forces that the terrorists must not succeed in returning to Pakistan.
The forces identified an 8-km path that they could use to cross over and security was beefed up in that region. The forces located secret tunnels used by the terrorists for infiltration and dug up to flood them. This blocked the routes and foiled their escape plans. Eventually, the forces tracked them down and eliminated them.

Sanjay Dwivedi writes to PM Modi, demands aid for Pahalgam victims' kin

Sanjay Dwivedi, father of Pahalgam terror attack victim Shubham Dwivedi, has written two letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded compensation for the families of the April 22 deadly attack victims and a grant of "martyr status". He also described AAP MP Sanjay Singh as "one of the few leaders who stand with truth", and highlighted the issues of the families of the Pahalgam terror victims in Parliament. Dwivedi, while speaking to the ANI, said, "He is one of the few leaders who stands with the truth. He presented our issues in the Parliament with all his might... I hope he will stand by our demands in the future too... I have written two letters to the Prime Minister (demanding compensation for the families of the victims and for the victims to be given the 'martyr' status). This is not a matter of party politics. This is a national issue." Sanjay Singh on Sunday met the family of the Pahalgam terror attack victim Shubham Dwivedi during his visit to Kanpur. After the meeting, he spoke to reporters and called on the Union government to grant martyr status to victims. The AAP Rajya Sabha MP stated that he had also raised the demand during the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament. Singh said, "I had raised this point in the Parliament that the victims' families demand that all those who died in Pahalgam should be given the status of martyrs. Shubham's father also demands that the tragic incident that happened cannot be compensated in a lifetime, but the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and the government should definitely take the steps they can. This will also be a message against terrorism." The AAP leader also criticised the government over what he termed a "delay" in providing compensation for the families of the victims."The government must provide compensation and jobs to the families of the Pahalgam terror attack victims. There has been a lot of delay in that," Singh said. Shubham Dwivedi was among the 26 people killed when terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists and locals in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam. Indian armed forces carried out Operation Sindoor on May 7 to avenge the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, which killed 26 people. TG emerging as an international handloom hub: Kishan Reddy

Hyderabad: Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has underlined that the Centre, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has actively promoted the textile sector through the 'Make in India' programme and is implementing the '5F' strategy: Farm to fibre, fabric, fashion, and foreign markets. In his speech, after inaugurating a week-long festival to celebrate National Handloom Day on Sunday, he observed that the handloom sector had experienced consistent growth over the past 11 years. According to him, this sector currently contributes 2.3% to the country's GDP, with 13% of industrial production and 12% of exports coming from handloom products. As a result, India has become the sixth-largest exporter of handloom and textiles worldwide, with exports valued at Rs. 3 lakh crore for the 2023-24 period. The Modi government aims to increase this figure to Rs. 9 lakh crore by 2030. Additionally, comprehensive support is being provided through the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. The Union Minister emphasised the crucial role of the handloom and textile industry in India's economy, stating that it provided employment to millions and significantly boosted foreign exchange reserves. After agriculture, the handloom sector generated the most jobs, employing approximately 5 crore individuals, both directly and indirectly. Through the National Handloom Development Project (NHDP), the central government supported handloom weavers by providing marketing opportunities in international markets and developing essential infrastructure, the Minister said. Additionally, subsidised loans were available to weavers. The Modi government also offered a monthly pension of Rs. 8,000 to national and state award-winning weavers, along with scholarships of Rs. 2 lakh per year for the children of weavers interested in pursuing higher education in the textile field. Additionally, efforts were being made to recognise weavers by offering them support to participate in both domestic and international exhibitions. 'Approximately 20 handloom workers from Telangana showcased our weaving art at expos in Australia, Germany, Italy, and the United States. Consequently, local handloom workers gained valuable insights into the global market and how to promote our products.' All told, Telangana was emerging as an international handloom hub, with its weaving prowess gaining worldwide recognition. The state had over 17,000 handloom weavers and about 48,000 associated workers, who were essential to the handloom sector. Their artistry was evident in products such as Pochampally Ikat, Gadwal sarees, Narayanapet cotton sarees, Siddipet Gollabhama sarees, Telia Rumal, and Warangal carpets, all of which had attained Geographical Indication (GI) tags and international acclaim. The accomplishments of Telangana's handloom workers, who had successfully brought the state's art to a global audience, 'are a source of pride for all of us'. To further promote this progress, Prime Minister Modi was encouraging weavers, he said. The Secunderabad MP mentioned that the Centre proposed creating seven world-class PM-MITRA parks (PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel) across the country and the one allocated to Telangana would significantly benefit the region. The Kakatiya Mega Textile Park in Warangal was expected to attract investments exceeding Rs 10,000 crore and create employment opportunities for 2 lakh people, directly and indirectly. Moreover, due to Modi's initiatives, 100 electronic jacquards had been distributed in Telangana, and 31 handloom producer companies had been established, Kishan Reddy stated. The government was quickly implementing programs to revive the production of Himru fabric, Pithambari sarees, and Armoor silk sarees. Clusters in Siddipet, Kamalapur, Dubbaka, and Warangal were being developed, and as part of the Samarth Skill Training Program, over 900 weavers had received training. 'We are providing assistance for adopting modern weaving methods. 'We have provided Mudra loans of Rs 70 crore to establish handlooms and support weavers. Modi is dedicated to advancing the handloom sector in every possible way,' the Minister said. Kishan Reddy urged everyone to support the handloom sector and promote handloom products. 'Only then will our culture receive the recognition it deserves, and our weavers will feel motivated to foster the pride of our nation,' he remarked.

Delhi Assembly set for stormy start to five-day session

New Delhi Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal at the Delhi Assembly premises on Sunday. (Arvind Yadav/HT Photo) Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Sunday kicked off the Delhi Assembly's paperless initiative and inaugurated a solar power project on the premises, clearing the decks for a stormy five-day Monsoon Session from Monday, during which waterlogging woes, CAG audits and new bills are set to be tackled. According to the official list of business, on the first day, the government is likely to introduce the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Bill and table two Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India reports on the previous government's performance. In the run-up to the session, Opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government on the school fee bill, alleging it will lead to 'windfall gains for private schools.' The Delhi Congress announced a march outside the Vidhan Sabha on the opening to protest demolition drives in slums and the alleged failure of the state government to start ₹2,500 monthly assistance to Delhi's women. The session will also mark multiple firsts: Delhi's Assembly's first fully digital session and the assembly complex being run entirely on solar power. Agenda: CAG, edu bill The assembly proceedings will commence around 2pm on Monday, with the assembly tentatively likely to convene over five days, between August 4 and 8. The list of business issued by the assembly secretariat states that the assembly will begin with MLAs raising issues under Special Mention (Rule-280). It will be followed by the chief minister Rekha Gupta tabling CAG reports on the 'state finances for the year 2023-24' and 'Welfare of building and other construction workers' for 2023. CAG reports have been a major friction point between the AAP and the BJP, with the latter accusing the AAP of withholding CAG's findings. In previous assembly sessions, CAG reports on the performance of the previous AAP government related to health, liquor, transport and pollution, among others, have already been tabled. On Monday, education minister Ashish Sood will also introduce 'The Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Bill, 2025' for discussion. Under the proposed law, the government plans to introduce major reforms in the city's school fee regulation regime, which will apply to all 1,677 private unaided schools in Delhi. The bill also fixes factors for determining the fee, stiff penalties for non-compliance and a three-tier fee regulation structure involving committees at the school, district, and state levels, which will institutionalise parental participation in the process. The move comes against the backdrop of widespread protests by parents across Delhi earlier this year, alleging arbitrary and excessive fee hikes by private schools. The AAP has slammed the bill, alleging it would benefit private schools. 'Until now, a single parent could file a complaint, but the new law will empower the education mafia to act with impunity,' AAP state president Saurabh Bharadwaj said. Besides the bill, the assembly will also see the presentation of reports from the Business Advisory Committee and Rules Committee, and the annual accounts report of the power regulator DERC. Paperless session Union law minister Arjun Mehwal on Sunday inaugurated the integration of the E-Vidhan platform, which advances the assembly's digital transformation by enabling a paperless legislative process for administrative efficiency and reducing the institution's carbon footprint. Members, ministers and the chief minister also tried their hands on the new system a day ahead of the formal beginning of the session. Meghwal said that the launch of the NeVA platform under the 'One Nation, One Application' initiative of Digital India 2.0 not only signifies an infrastructure upgrade, but a shift in institutional values. 'With full implementation expected in the upcoming Monsoon Session, the Delhi Assembly will transition to completely paperless operations. This fusion of climate responsibility and administrative reform must begin at the heart of democratic institutions,' he said. Speaker Vijender Gupta said that the work of the E-Vidhan system was completed in just 100 days. 'A trial run of the new system is scheduled for 11am tomorrow, followed by a House sitting at 2pm, which will be held entirely on solar power without using electricity from conventional sources,' Gupta said. The first trial on Sunday offered firsthand experience of the digital interface, which includes smart delegate units with microphones and voting panels, RFID access, multilingual support, real-time document access via iPads, and an automated audio-visual system with cameras. Chief minister Rekha Gupta said that Delhi's capital legislature must lead the way in India's transition to sustainable and efficient governance. 'With the rollout of NeVA in the monsoon session, the Delhi Assembly is poised to offer a more transparent, accessible, and digitally empowered legislative experience,' she said. Solar power On Sunday, a 500 kW solar power plant was launched on the assembly premises, making the complex fully powered by solar energy. It is expected to help save ₹1.75 crore annually. Mehwal said: 'Delhi Assembly's complete transition to solar energy has set a benchmark for legislative and public institutions nationwide.' Speaker Gupta said that the building was constructed in 1912 and housed the country's first Parliament, due to which 'heritage and development will go hand in hand'. 'The financial savings would be reinvested in developmental work for the welfare of Delhi's people. By embracing both clean energy and digital workflows, the Delhi Assembly is contributing directly to India's net-zero targets and setting a national example of climate-conscious governance,' he said. In a statement, the assembly secretariat said that the Delhi Assembly has become the first legislature in India to run entirely on renewable energy.
