On April 11, the BJP ensured a smooth transition in its State leadership in Tamil Nadu. Nainar Nagenthran, a three-time MLA from Tirunelveli who also served as a Minister in Jayalalithaa's Cabinet, was unanimously elected as the State unit president of the party. The next day, he took over the reins from K. Annamalai, a former IPS officer who galvanised the party through his aggressive style of functioning.
Mr. Nagenthran's elevation from the post of vice-president of the State unit was seen as a strategic move by the BJP's high command to strengthen its relations with the AIADMK, which revived its ties with the national party earlier this month, nearly 19 months after walking out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), accusing the then BJP State leadership of slandering its icons.
The political career of Mr. Nagenthran has seen both successes and setbacks. Born in 1960 at Vadiveeswaram in Nagercoil, in Tamil Nadu's southernmost Kanniyakumari district, Mr. Nagenthran traces his roots to Panagudi, a village nestled in the neighbouring Tirunelveli district. With an early interest in the natural sciences, he pursued a Bachelor's degree in Botany from Arignar Anna College in Kanniyakumari. He later enrolled in MDT Hindu College in Tirunelveli, for a Master's in Tamil literature, a course he eventually discontinued to focus on agriculture and his family's business ventures.

A staunch admirer of legendary actor and former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, he was drawn to politics in his college days, inspired by MGR's charisma and ideology. He joined the AIADMK and quickly became active in its students' wing, marking the start of a long and loyal association with the party for nearly three decades. When MGR passed away in 1987 and the AIADMK faced a turbulent split, Mr. Nagenthran threw his weight behind the Jayalalithaa-led faction, cementing his place in her camp.
His steadfast commitment and grassroots connection did not go unnoticed. Jayalalithaa appointed him deputy secretary in 1988 and then district secretary in 1989 of the party's literary wing in the undivided Tirunelveli district. Later, from serving as the Valliyoor union secretary, he rose steadily through the ranks, earning the trust and confidence of party supremo Jayalalithaa, and was eventually elevated to the post of State secretary of the AIADMK's Amma Peravai.
While Mr. Nagenthran, who belongs to the influential Thevar community in southern Tamil Nadu, had long been a dedicated party functionary, it was in 2001 that a major break came his way — a foray into electoral politics. Recognising his years of grassroots work, Jayalalithaa handpicked him as the party's candidate for the Tirunelveli Assembly constituency.
Despite a favourable wave for the AIADMK-led alliance in the 2001 elections, Mr. Nagenthran could only scrape through with a narrow win. To his surprise, Jayalalithaa inducted him into her Cabinet and entrusted him with the Transport portfolio. Later, he went on to become Minister for Electricity and Industries.
In the 2006 elections, the DMK came to power, and Mr. Nagenthran narrowly lost the Tirunelveli seat by just 606 votes. The same year, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption filed a case against him for allegedly amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income, leading to raids on his properties in Chennai and Tirunelveli. He made a strong comeback in the 2011 Assembly elections, winning Tirunelveli by over 38,000 votes. However, he was not inducted into Jayalalithaa's Cabinet. In the 2016 elections, he lost the same seat again by a slim margin of 601 votes.
Joining BJP
Following Jayalalithaa's death in December 2016, he joined the BJP in August 2017 in the presence of the then national president Amit Shah, citing inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed vice-president of the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit.
In 2018, he sparked a controversy by reportedly threatening Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu in a protest over the latter's alleged remarks on Andal, one among the 12 Alwars (Vaishnavite minstrels). A case was filed against him. In the 2019 general elections, Mr. Nagenthran contested from the Ramanathapuram Lok Sabha constituency but lost by nearly 1.2 lakh votes.
After the 2019 elections, the then BJP State President Tamilisai Soundararajan was appointed Governor of Telangana. Mr. Nagenthran was speculated to be her successor, but the party chose L. Murugan instead. In the 2021 Assembly elections, he won the Tirunelveli seat as a BJP candidate. As the senior-most among the four elected BJP MLAs — three of whom were first-timers — he was appointed the legislature party leader. In both the 2019 and 2021 elections, the BJP contested in alliance with the AIADMK.
Even as the legislature party leader, Mr. Nagenthran continued to maintain a composed demeanour in the Assembly during fiery debates. Despite being a sitting MLA, he managed to get a ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but failed to succeed from his home turf, Tirunelveli. With his recent elevation to the State BJP's top post, it remains to be seen whether Mr. Nagenthran would be able to sustain the momentum built by Mr. Annamalai and lead the party to new electoral successes.

Mizoram BJP chief slams govt for ‘misutilisation' of central funds
1 2 Aizawl: Mizoram BJP unit president Vanlalhmuaka on Monday slammed the state govt for not judiciously utilising the funds allocated for implementation of central schemes, resulting in underutilisation of central funds meant for the uplift of marginal sections of the society in the state. Addressing party workers at 'Mipui Run' or Atal Bhavan (BJP office) in Aizawl, Vanlalhmuaka said while some people in Mizoram benefited from the central schemes launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's govt, there are a number of people who have not received full benefits of the schemes due to misutilisation of funds. Making special mention to 'Housing for All', he said a large number of people could not complete the construction of their homes despite receiving funds under the scheme. According to the records maintained by the state rural development & administration (RD&A) department, 25,011 beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G) or 'housing for all' out of 29,966 selected families in Mizoram have completed the construction of their homes which is 83.46% as of May 20. RD&A officials said the PMAY-G was launched during 2016-2017 when the fund was released in four instalments and after 2020 the fund was released in three instalments. They said the central govt has given a green signal to continue the PMAY-G til 2028-29 for which 54,588 families have been selected as beneficiaries while it is yet to be known when the fund will be given to them.

Bengaluru stampede: HD Kumaraswamy calls Siddaramaiah ‘Stairs CM', slams him for putting blame on police
Bengaluru: Union minister HD Kumaraswamy trained his guns on chief minister Siddaramaiah , dubbing him the "Stairs CM" (equating to the stairs in front of the secretariat) for his statement that the stampede incident did not occur in front of Vidhana Soudha and was unrelated to him. Kumaraswamy took to X on Monday and questioned whether Siddaramaiah is the chief minister of Karnataka or only for the Vidhana Soudha stairs. He asked how fair it was to wash his hands clean by skirting the blame entirely on police and why there was a desperate ploy to distract by targeting the opposition. Meanwhile, the KPCC criticised the social media campaign in support of the suspended Bengaluru city police commissioner B Dayananda. KPCC spokesperson Ramesh Babu said no one from Dayananda's community requested the CM to appoint him as the commissioner. It was the CM's call as part of his social commitment to taking all the communities together. "The opinion emerging after the suspensions is BJP-driven," he alleged. He questioned BJP for not appointing Dayananda as the commissioner during its tenure though he was eligible for the post. "BJP is playing politics in the name of caste," he claimed.

India saw rapid changes across sectors in 11 years: PM Narendra Modi
Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government marked the completion of 11 years in office on Monday by unveiling a 176-page 'comprehensive compendium' on India's transformation under the PM's 'visionary leadership' across 14 facets of policymaking — ranging from national security and foreign policy to infrastructure growth, healthcare, women's empowerment, and social justice. 'PM Modi has brought the politics of development — Vikasvaad — into the mainstream, making it a focal point around which political discourse and policy action now revolve,' detailed the booklet, released on Monday morning by the government's Press Information Bureau (PIB). The Modi-led 72-member Union Council of Ministers had taken the oath of office on June 9, 2024. In the afternoon, addressing a press conference at the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) national headquarters here, the party's National President J P Nadda, who is also a Union minister, said that proactive governance has been the hallmark of Modi's tenure as the country's PM. He said Modi has confronted challenges head-on and taken 'bold decisions' once thought impossible, such as the 'abrogation of Article 370', the 2016 surgical strike, the Balakot air strike, and Operation Sindoor of 2025. Nadda listed the banning of triple talaq, the Citizenship Amendment Act, demonetisation, one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha (LS) and legislative Assemblies, ending the distinction between plan and non-plan expenditure, advancing the Union Budget presentation from the 'colonial-era' February 28 to February 1, and merging the railway Budget with the Union Budget as other key decisions over the past 11 years. Nadda said demonetisation — where people queued up to withdraw money without complaining despite the Opposition's intense efforts to provoke them — was evidence of the credibility of the PM's leadership. Referring to the BJP falling short of the majority mark by 32 seats in the 2024 LS polls and, for the first time since 2014, having to rely on allies to secure a majority — with Opposition leaders raising questions about the government's longevity — Nadda expressed confidence that the NDA government will complete its tenure and asserted it will last the next full term as well. 'Our government is strong. It will last for five years in this term and the next too,' he said. The booklet said, 'The success of Operation Sindoor demonstrated a new India: resolute, swift, and sovereign in action.' It added that a dynamic foreign and national security policy is essential to respond to today's global opportunities and challenges. 'The Modi government has consistently delivered on this front, ensuring a stable, strong, and safe nation,' it said. The booklet highlighted vibrant India-US relations as a foreign policy success, terming it 'Modi's adaptive strategy with the US'. It said India has emerged as an economic powerhouse, with the government creating a base for 'growthade' through infrastructure expansion, such as the development of national highways. The government also said it has championed cooperative federalism by incentivising states to undertake reforms voluntarily. It mentioned the all-time high goods and services tax collections in April 2025. It also detailed measures for the welfare of Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and women through schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana, adding that 810 million people continue to receive food security. 'There is highest ever representation for the SCs, STs, and OBCs in the Union Council of Ministers,' it said. The government claimed that welfare measures, such as Mission Poshan, have helped improve the sex ratio at birth, which, for the first time, stands at 1,020 women per 1,000 men. At his press conference, Nadda said the Indian economy continues to grow despite global challenges and that international bodies like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have called it a bright spot. He said over 250 million people have been lifted out of poverty — a figure acknowledged globally. Nadda dismissed Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh's jibe at Modi for not addressing a press conference on the government's anniversary. The Union minister questioned what was wrong with the president of the main ruling party speaking to the media. He also criticised Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's remarks about the Election Commission of India and the fairness of the Maharashtra Assembly polls, likening him to a sore loser in a cricket match who blames the umpire for a loss while claiming credit in case of a win. The Congress on Monday released two booklets that flagged stagnating growth, rising hunger, and 'unfulfilled promises' over the 11 years of the Modi government. At a press conference in the national capital, Congress Research Department Head M V Rajeev Gowda released Ek Aur Baar Jumla Sarkar and 11 Saal Jhoothe Vikaas Ke Vaade. He said the first booklet examines promises made by the BJP in its 2024 manifesto, while the second is a 'detailed exposé' of the BJP's 'hollow promises'. 'In the 11-Saal document, one of the first themes they (BJP) highlight is taking care of the poor and the marginalised. They are very happy that 810 million people are getting free foodgrain under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. But the basic problem of hunger is a much larger crisis in India, and it puts us at 105 out of 127 countries in the World Hunger Index. Its implications: malnutrition is affecting our children in a horrible way, crippling their growth. Stunting is at 35.5 per cent; wasting is at 19.3 per cent; underweight is at 32.1 per cent,' Gowda said. He also alleged that the Centre's claim in the PIB booklet that India added over 5,000 defence items to the indigenisation list was untrue. 'Sadly, 40 per cent of the items listed for indigenisation have not been indigenised as of now. India remains one of the top importers of defence rather than a producer and exporter. If you look at 'mission mode DRDO projects,' 23 out of 55 have been delayed, and the share of research and development in our defence budget is only 5.45 per cent,' he said. He further challenged the claim that India is the fastest-growing large economy. 'So, what is happening in this 11th year of your Sarkar, PM Modi? What is happening is reflected in the response of the private sector. Is the Indian private sector investing in India? If you look at the investment figures, after you have given the bonanza tax cut, nothing has changed. They still don't have confidence in the management of your economy to invest,' Gowda said. He added that fixed capital formation has declined to 32.4 per cent — an 11-year low. 'There is another legacy: the glaring inequality. The share of wealth held by India's top 1 per cent is 40 per cent. The bottom 50 per cent have to make do with just over 3 per cent,' the former Congress Member of Parliament said, adding that this is not the economy the country wants.
