BBC MasterChef's self-taught Welsh cook who's modelled for Dior
23-year-old Finley Richards from Newport is on the new series of BBC One's MasterChef, but cooking is just one of his talents
"Making cooking videos online led me to applying as I had amassed a total of two million views, and I had a few comments from friends and family urging me to apply so I thought 'why not?'."
A logistics manager, part-time model and social media chef from south Wales is one of this year's MasterChef contestants. 23-year-old Finley Richards has managed to fit a lot into his young career and now the self-taught chef from Newport is on one of the BBC's most hotly discussed shows.
Finley grew up in Newport where he lives today with his mum, dad, brother, sister and two dogs. Both before and after graduating from Cardiff University, he pursued a career in modelling, where he landed himself opportunities with huge fashion houses Louis Vuitton and Dior.
So how did the leap from modelling for some of the biggest designers to being on MasterChef come about? The idea to apply for the cooking show, which in recent months has been mired in controversy due to investigations levelled against hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode, came soon after Finley began showing off his cooking skills on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.
Viewers will see Finley's journey air after the BBC decided to still show this year's amatuer series because it was the "right thing to do" for those who took part. Torode and Wallace were both fired last month after a report into conduct on the cooking show upheld allegations against them.

The Welsh cook told WalesOnline: "I wanted to challenge myself and see how good I was under pressure so I applied to MasterChef.
"Making cooking videos online led me to applying as I had amassed a total of two million views, and I had a few comments from friends and family urging me to apply so I thought why not."
Finley and his girlfriend Molly went viral on TikTok, accumulating hundreds of thousands of views as they started their own "Come Dine with Me" style series, cooking for each other and rating the dishes. There was one important rule - make everything from scratch.
The popularity of this series not only created a trend, with couples recreating it across the UK, but also sparked some more food content from Finley, where he shows his followers how he makes his 'Sunday morning eggs,' and other fun recipes. "I've always enjoyed cooking from a fairly young age. I think I've cooked for myself since I was mid-teens. At that point it was probably just pesto pasta, but the obsession has evolved," said Finley.
"Cooking at university forced me to get creative and experiment with what I had. It also taught me that if I don't know how to cook then I'd starve.
"If anything, I'd say my dad has impacted my love for cooking the most. He's great and has always cooked at home.
"His late brother was a chef, and his dad also cooked in the army. Perhaps it's innate in me."
"My style of cooking is intuitive and creative. I like to think I can open a fridge or a cupboard and work with whatever is in there.
"I just cook what I love to eat, and I enjoy being creative with it. I've learned a lot from watching chefs online and on social media, but my favourite way to learn is sitting at a restaurant counter, watching chefs cook right in front of me."
As for his plans after the show, Finley hopes to grow his social media platforms and eventually, make a cookbook of his own.
"I'd love to work with food in some capacity. Whether that's on social media or something else."
You can follow Finley on TikTok @finleyrichardss and Instagram @finleyrichards for his latest recipes.
"I've always wondered whether I could cope in a professional kitchen and seeing chefs operate intrigues me," he added.
"I would love to have my own cookbook, but it would have to be really credible. I've got such respect for chefs who do this for real in a professional kitchen.
"I think that's why I applied, to prove I'm capable to myself and everyone else that I can cook under pressure.
"So maybe if I was to be successful one day, I'd create a cookbook with all of my favourite dishes, that I've created myself."
You can watch the start of Finley's MasterChef journey on BBC One on Thursday night at 8pm. You can click here to catch up on BBC iPlayer.

MasterChef with Gregg Wallace and John Torode loses nearly 1m viewers
The latest season of MasterChef, hosted by fired presenters John Torode and Gregg Wallace, has been dealt a huge viewership blow. The first three episodes of the pre-recorded season, which the BBC ultimately decided to air despite the misconduct scandal, are available to watch on iPlayer, and new episodes are airing on BBC One at 8pm. The series, which premiered yesterday, underwent last-minute editing to focus on the amateur chefs over the recently sacked hosts – as well as cut out one of the cooks who spoke out against the series being released. Fans shared their conflicted thoughts about the new series with some believing it was the right thing to give the contestants their chance to shine despite the troubled backdrop. Many online, however, also vowed to boycott the new series which will be the final one helmed by both Wallace and Torode now they are being replaced. This decision seems to have translated to viewership as the BBC News reports just under two million people (1.96m to be exact) tuned into last night's episode. This is a significant drop from last year's premiere which saw 2.7 million viewers watch overnight – although there could be other factors at play including the differing release window and general move away from linear TV watching. Especially as the episodes are also available online already. Critics shared that the feel of this new season does feel different to episodes that have come before. The Evening Standard called it an 'absolute mess' and The Telegraph said it 'lacked pizzazz'. Although The Guardian shared that, for the most part, it seems unchanged. 'It seems the BBC and Banijay have decided essentially to ignore the problem and hope that putting out more or less the same show as ever will suffice,' the review wrote. Wallace – against whom 45 out of 83 allegations were substantiated in the Silkins review including a case of 'unwanted physical contact – was suspended during the filming of this season with Irish chef Anna Haugh stepping in for the final episode. More Trending The 60-year-old TV personality was officially removed from the show last month with his co-host following after him after a racial language accusation was upheld against him. There is no word on whether the BBC plans to release the Torode Celebrity MasterChef season with Grace Dent or the two festival specials he is set to feature in will still be released. The BBC is also yet to officially announce who will replace the pair, although it is believed to be Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt and Great British Menu's Andi Oliver. MasterChef airs tomorrow night at 8:30pm on BBC One and returns for the final three episodes next week. Got a story? BBC to air film about The Vivienne after drag star's death
BBC to air film about The Vivienne after drag star's death "Although she left us far too soon her life was defined by her breathtaking talent, scene-stealing charisma, and infinite kindness" The Vivienne passed away in January at the age of 32 (Image: PA) A tribute film about drag queen The Vivienne is set to air this summer. The BBC has announced the feature film, Dear Viv, will chronicle the life of James Lee Williams, who performed as the drag queen and tragically passed away in January at the age of 32. A coroner ruled that the performer's death was by misadventure when Williams suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest after taking ketamine, PA reports. The star gained prominence after clinching victory in the first ever series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK in 2019 and securing third place in the 2023 series of Dancing On Ice. Williams, who was raised in Colwyn Bay, adopted the drag name as they were renowned for donning Vivienne Westwood clothing. Through a mix of interviews, family photos, home videos and behind-the-scenes Drag Race footage, the film will commemorate The Vivienne's life, tracing their journey from north Wales and Liverpool to the international stage. The film will also feature interviews with Williams' family, early mentors and Drag Race friends including Baga Chipz, Michael Marouli and Danny Beard. Tia Kofi will also appear in the film alongside Cheryl Hole, Raja, Monet X Change, and Trinity The Tuck, as they pay homage to the drag star. The film also addresses the star's self-admitted struggle with ketamine addiction and the campaigning carried out by The Vivienne's sister, Chanel Williams, who advocates for improved awareness around the dangers of the drug. Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, co-founders of World of Wonder, who produced the film, said: "We wanted to celebrate The Vivienne and not just mourn her. The Vivienne was best known for Drag Race UK, which she won in 2019 (Image: BBC) "Although she left us far too soon her life was defined by her breathtaking talent, scene-stealing charisma, and infinite kindness. "We hope her vision and her voice shine through in Dear Viv and that it inspires everyone who watches it. "Although producing it was bittersweet, we are so grateful to friends and family for trusting us to tell The Vivienne's story. Above all, we hope Viv loves the film as much as we loved her." Nasfim Haque, the head of content for BBC Three added: "Dear Viv is a fitting tribute to The Vivienne who truly was a trailblazer in the world of drag. She showcased her artistry and talent brilliantly and paved the way for many to follow in her footsteps". M&S reveals viral treat is going to be axed from UK shelves in DAYS as shoppers scramble to grab
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SHOPPERS have just days left to try this summer's most viral food. Marks and Spencer's issued a "Strawberry and Creme Sandwich alert" announcing it is the last chance to try the unique sweet treat before it is taken off supermarket shelves. The £2.80 luxury sandwich was packed with strawberries and a whipped cream cheese filling, all hugged between slices of sweet bread. It was a huge viral hit on social media with hundreds of food influencers and TikTok stars trying the unusual meal. Even The Sun's Fabulous reporter Leanne Hall decided to put the new creation to the test. 'This new addition to the M&S summer food collection is one you won't want to miss,' Leanne said. 'The concept may seem strange, but it works.' Despite the sandwich being popular across social media, M&S have now announced they will be axed soon. They posted on Instagram: "The summer sandwich sensation - our Red Diamond Strawberry & Creme Sandwich will only be available for a few more days. "Yes, that's right – it's your last chance to get hold of our limited-edition sarnie so make sure you run and don't walk to your local Foodhall to grab a few slices of M&S Food history!" It is unclear if the sandwich will return next year. I went to the UK's best sandwich shop that's gone viral on TikTok due to amazing family history and huge portions But many M&S shoppers have begged the supermarket to make it an annual sale. One said: "Please do this one again next year, it was delicious." A second wrote on social media: "I really like it, please bring it back next year! I will have to buy my last one this Saturday." A third even cheekily added: "I'm having two for breakfast tomorrow!" M&S has a long history of sandwich innovation, having introduced freshly made sandwiches in the 1920s and revolutionising the UK high street with pre-packed sandwiches in the 1980s. Since then, the retailer has sold over four billion sandwiches, making this latest launch a bold new addition to its portfolio. And with summer-themed items now leaving stores across the UK, some major supermarkets are already selling Christmas goods. A Morrisons shopper was left stunned after they spotted a festive display of treats at their local. Joe Andrew was visiting the supermarket with his children Summer, 11, William, six, and four-year-old Jack, when he came across the confectionary. He photographed boxes of Smarties, MilkyBar, and Fruit Pastilles that all had yuletide imagery on them.
