Manchester United have made an offer for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko after Newcastle submitted a second bid for the Slovenia international, the PA news agency understands.
PA understands Newcastle made a second approach to Leipzig after seeing an initial offer for the 22-year-old – reportedly worth 75million euros (£65.1m) with a further 5m euros (£4.3m) in potential add-ons – rejected last week.
That improved offer of at least 80m euros (£69.5m) has been followed by Ruben Amorim's United cementing their long-standing interest with a bid of their own.
The Red Devils have tabled a proposal worth a reported 75m euros (£65.1m) plus a potential 10m euros (£8.7m) in add-ons as they seek to take Sesko to Old Trafford.

Russell Martin's bold team selection paid off as Rangers battered Viktoria Plzen 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifier at Ibrox.
The Gers boss hit out at some of his squad following their deflating 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday, questioning mentality, egos and application, and captain James Tavernier and midfielder Nicolas Raskin were the biggest names left out among the expected changes.
Martin got the required reaction as winger Djeidi Gassama scored after 15 minutes with his third European goal in three ties before returning striker Cyriel Dessers added a second from the spot just before the interval.
Gassama, signed this summer from Sheffield Wednesday, scored a third in the 51st minute to put the Govan side into a commanding lead and eventually a comfortable win.

Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been granted conditional bail after appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court on rape and sexual assault charges.
The Ghanaian, 32, has been charged with five counts of rape against two women, as well as a charge of sexual assault against a third woman.
The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player.
His bail conditions include that he cannot contact any of the three women and must notify police of any permanent changes of address or international travel.
It comes amid reports that Partey is set to join Spanish club Villarreal.

Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan expects the crisis-hit club to fulfil their opening Sky Bet Championship fixture away to Leicester.
Wednesday's players refused to feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley on Saturday after wages were not paid on time for the fourth time in five months.
Sheffield Wednesday Supporters' Trust plans to protest against under-fire owner Dejphon Chansiri during Sunday's televised match against the Foxes at the King Power Stadium.
Asked if there was a prospect of players going on strike, Bannan, who on Saturday signed a new contract at Hillsborough, told talkSPORT: 'No, I don't think so.
'We pulled out of the Burnley game at the weekend, that was simply because it's happened too much now and I think it's a lot easier to pull put of a pre-season friendly game than it is a Championship fixture.'
What's on today?
League of Ireland side Shelbourne travel to Croatia to play Rijeka in the Europa League third qualifying round.
There are six matches in the third qualifying round of the Champions League including Nice against Benfica and Feyenoord against Fenerbahce.

Vladimir Weiss targets Celtic revenge mission as ex Rangers star defends dad over touchline meltdown
The veteran has come to his dad's defence after his meltdown on the touchline Former Rangers winger Vladimir Weiss is desperate to tee up a Celtic revenge mission by overturning Kairat Almaty's lead in the second leg. And the veteran has come to his dad's defence after his meltdown on the touchline during the 1-0 defeat in Kazakhstan. Slovan Bratislava boss Weiss Sr was sent off in their first leg defeat after a late penalty was awarded against his side. Despite playing the final 25 minutes with 10 men after Rahim Ibrahim was sent off, Slovan looked set to claim a valuable 0-0 draw in Kazakhstan until the last minute of the game, where Dastan Satpaev stepped up to bag the winner from 12 yards after Kairat were awarded a penalty kick. The veteran boss confronted the ref and the fourth official and stormed onto the pitch before being dragged away against the club he used to manage 10 years ago. His son played on loan for Rangers and helped them to a Scottish title in 2011 and is still going strong by captaining Slovan at the age of 35. And he's desperate to get another crack at playing Celtic in the Champions League playoff as he explained his dad's antics. He said: "He's a very emotional man and this match meant even more to him because he used to manage Kairat Almaty. Just as I would do anything for this team, so would he. "He regrets what happened now, but there's nothing he can do about it now. "Unfortunately, we will miss him in the home leg, but with the quality on our side and with our excellent fans, we will beat them at a sold-out stadium and win through to play against Celtic." Leanne Crichton aiming to deliver league title as Rangers head coach
New Rangers women's team head coach Leanne Crichton has set her sights on winning the SWPL title and making an impact in Europe. The former Scotland international has replaced Jo Potter in the dugout for the new season, which kicks off in ten days time. Rangers won both cup competitions last campaign, but fell just short in the league and eventually finished third behind Hibernian and Glasgow City despite taking it to the final day. Potter then departed for Crystal Palace and Rangers turned to Crichton to lead the side into the 2025/26 season, and she is determined to deliver success in the SWPL. She said: 'There was some contact between the club and myself a number of weeks back, obviously the approach was there and the conversations after that were really positive. 'To win, is the short-term plan, and ultimately for us, the long-term plan. The league title is the one thing that's been missing. 'It's a really successful team that I am taking over, in terms of four trophies from six, but the league title is the one trophy that every Rangers team wants to win. 'With that it would guarantee Champions League football, and for me that would be the ultimate aim to deliver the league title and then get a shot at Europe. 'That is what we will set out to do, I am very realistic regarding how competitive the league is, so the margins will be tight, but it will be up to us as a group to find that 1% extra that will make the difference.' Rangers gets their SWPL season under way with a trip to Montrose on Sunday, August 17.
