This year, driven by the wave of artificial intelligence, a new generation of billionaires is rapidly emerging worldwide, particularly in Silicon Valley, USA. Experts interviewed by CNBC pointed out that the current AI boom is swiftly becoming one of the largest wealth-creation waves in modern history.
Several massive funding rounds this year have skyrocketed the valuations of startups like OpenAI and Anthropic. According to data from the global market research platform CB Insights, there are 498 AI "unicorn" companies globally—referring to unlisted AI companies valued at $1 billion or more.
Their total valuation? It has reached a staggering $2.7 trillion, with a full 100 of these companies founded after 2023, indicating that many of them are still quite young. Notable examples include:
Mira Murati, the former Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, left her position in September last year and founded a new company, , in February this year. In less than half a year since its inception, the company secured $2 billion in seed funding in July, reaching a valuation of approximately $12 billion.
Meanwhile, another AI startup, Anthropic AI, is reportedly in talks for a new funding round of $50 billion, which could push its valuation to $170 billion. According to sources familiar with the matter cited by CNBC, the company's CEO, along with its six co-founders, are now likely among the ranks of billionaires.
Beyond the funding frenzy in AI startups, the stock prices of AI-related tech giants like NVIDIA, Meta, and Microsoft have also soared in the secondary market. Additionally, companies involved in building data centers and computing infrastructure have seen significant profit growth, while the salaries of AI engineers have surged in tandem.
Among the rising stars in this wave of tech innovation, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has undoubtedly captured the most attention. Recently, OpenAI unveiled its latest model, ChatGPT-5, marking another significant leap in AI development.
It's been just a weekend since the model's release, and it has already sparked polarized reactions across the industry and the general public. On one hand, industry insiders remain optimistic.
"GPT five is a breakthrough in being able to work through that information, not only quickly, but now with a way greater degree of accuracy."
On the other hand, American netizens have expressed significant dissatisfaction with the new model. On the popular U.S. forum Reddit, a post titled has garnered nearly 6,000 upvotes, with many users complaining that GPT-5's performance is inferior to older models.
It's worth noting that OpenAI has yet to turn a profit. Regarding this, Sam Altman has stated that he remains focused on growth and is unbothered by losses.
"I think we should be willing to keep growing, to keep investing in training compute for a long time...I think the rational thing to do is to just be willing to run at a loss for quite a while and continue to do that..."
Finally, from the broader AI industry perspective, CNBC's latest All America Economic Survey reveals a complex public sentiment. While the capital markets are optimistic, the American public harbors mixed feelings about AI. On one hand, over half of respondents reported using AI tools, but they also expressed wariness.
The survey shows that 53% of American respondents have used AI software in the past 2–3 months. However, when it comes to their attitude toward AI, 68% admitted feeling uneasy, primarily due to concerns about AI's impact on jobs.

JonesResearch sees Hut 8's shift to ABTC as re-rating catalyst, issues $31 price target

Hut 8's (HUT) Q2 results marked its first full period operating through majority-owned American Bitcoin (ABTC), a change JonesResearch says has effectively turned the miner into a capital-lighter, royalty-style business. The firm believes this structure, built on contractual colocation and managed services fees from ABTC, offers more predictable growth potential than directly owning mining rigs. Enjoying the read? Get our newsletter directly to your inbox on all things Bitcoin-equities by clicking here. Hut 8 reported Q2 revenue of $41.3 million and Jones-defined EBITDA of $3.7 million, missing JonesResearch's forecasts of $50.6 million and $14.9 million. The gap was primarily due to the absence of revenue recognition for 15 EH/s of Bitmain miners at the Vega site. Core fees from ABTC totaled about $14.3 million from colocation and $0.9 million from managed services, equating to roughly $26,100 and $1,600 per megawatt per month, respectively, across 183 MW of contracted capacity. JonesResearch's analysis of ABTC's standalone results shows $30.3 million in Q2 mining revenue and $2.4 million in gross profit (8.1% margin) at an estimated hashcost of $0.047/TH. Low cash G&A of $2.5 million kept EBITDA near break-even. The upcoming ABTC merger with Gryphon Digital Mining (GRYP) is expected to close in early September, with Hut projected to own 64.37% of ABTC, implying a $4.0 billion stake at ABTC's current implied $6.2 billion market value. Hut's own market cap sits at $2.1 billion. JonesResearch cautions that ABTC's pre-merger valuation may be inflated by Gryphon's limited float and prefers to see post-close trading normalize before drawing firm conclusions. Hut ended Q2 with $216 million in cash, but only $11 million excluding ABTC equity proceeds. Through August 6, the company raised an additional $21 million via its at-the-market equity program. Beyond mining, Hut is advancing HPC projects, including expanding its River Bend site in Louisiana from 300 MW to a targeted 1 GW and building a 50 MW AI/HPC facility in Batavia, Illinois. JonesResearch maintains its Buy rating and $31 price target, based on ~14x EV/EBITDA applied to its 2026 EBITDA forecast of $288 million, adjusted for Hut's ABTC stake and potential time of publication, HUT is up 6.4% and GRYP is up 0.8%. AOL dial-up service to end next month

Internet pioneer AOL is shuttering its dial-up service at the end of September after 30 years of providing its landline-based online connectivity. 'AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue Dial-up Internet,' the company said in announcing the move Monday. The company expects discontinuation will impact few people, as AOL shifted its focus to other programs with the expanded availability of broadband internet connectivity, according to a spokesperson for AOL parent company Yahoo! Inc. CNBC reported in 2021 that the number of AOL dial-up subscribers was 'in the low thousands.' 'This change does not impact the numerous other valued products and services that these subscribers are able to access and enjoy as part of their plans,' the Yahoo! spokesperson said in a statement to The Hill. 'There is also no impact to our users' free AOL email accounts.' The company, which was previously known as America Online, made billions selling dial-up modem internet access — shepherding millions of users online for the first time as web technology grew in the 1990s.
