Viktor Gyokeres news will be music to Man Utd's ears as £70m star subject of swap deal
Manchester United's hopes of landing Morten Hjulmand may have been helped by Viktor Gyokeres' move to Arsenal. United have been strongly linked with the Swedish striker, who played under Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP, before his transfer to Arsenal.
The Red Devils are keen on another Sporting player, midfielder Hjulmand, who is also wanted by Juventus, according to reports in Italy. However, rather than an outright purchase, the Turin giants are ready to offer Douglas Luiz as part of a swap deal, with Juve paying an additional fee.
However, that plan is complicated by Luiz's wages, believed to be worth around £4.3million a year, which are well beyond Sporting's current wage structure. Gazzetta dello Sport reports that will make any potential swap deal virtually impossible to complete.
Having lost Gyokeres, Sporting chief would be loath to lose another of their prized assets. And after agreeing a deal worth up to £64m for Gyokeres, Sporting are under no pressure to sell and can afford to hold out for Hjulmand's £70million release clause if they wish.
Additional reports in Italy claim Sporting would consider a fee of around £43m, but no lower. Having already splurged £133.5m this summer – and with RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko high on their list of targets – it remains to be seen whether United will land Hjulmand this summer.
However, given Juve's apparent difficulties in financing a deal, they can afford to bide their time and potentially wait for a future transfer window.
United are looking to offload a number of wantaway stars to help fund the much-needed revamp of Amorim's squad. However, the head coach has warned that players won't be allowed to leave on the cheap and says they could still have futures at the clubs.
Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia were left out of the tour of the United States and have been training at Carrington instead.
United's recent transfer dealings have been widely criticised but Amorim said chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox would not be taken advantage of.
'I know for a fact that these people, Omar and Jason, and the club have a number (price) for these players. If they don't reach that, they will be Manchester United players, no doubt about that,' said the United boss.
'I understand clubs are maybe waiting for the last minute, but they can have a surprise and I'm ready. I'm ready to receive the players.'

After an enjoyable week playing in the European Transnational Championships in Poznan recently (the Mixed Teams), I had time to spare before catching my flight home. The Open Teams had just begun, so I decided to kibitz for a while. I chose to sit behind the iconic Swedish player Peter Fredin, who I've been following keenly ever since he opened a strong No Trump against me with nul points many years ago. My partner and I never guessed we were cold for a grand slam. I soon found out that he was famous for his uncanny ability to read both cards and players. Opponents aren't even safe saying 'Thank you' when dummy goes down: he'll glean some information from the way they say it. He was partnering Artur Malinowski, another player with fantastic imagination and flair. It was a promising combination, and I wasn't disappointed. On this deal, Malinowski was South. Put yourself in his shoes: Being green vs red, you'd like to make a Michaels cue-bid showing both majors – but not at the seven-level. Most other Wests also opened 5♣️, quite a few Easts raised to 6♣️, and in both cases, the majority of Souths passed. Some Souths doubled, but were left regretting it when their partners passed (6♣️ was cold). One South bid a fearless 6♥️. Malinowski's choice? A brilliant 6♦️! He knew he'd be doubled. His plan was to redouble. He was confident that Fredin would be on the same wavelength, and realise it was an SOS, showing the other two suits. He was right: West doubled, Malinowski redoubled, and Fredin pulled to 6♥️, which East doubled. Three down was -500, a great score compared to -1370. Only one other brave South (a top Swedish player) bid 6♦️, but when he then redoubled, his partner passed. Minus 4000 is a score neither will forget in a hurry.

Man Utd make contact with Brighton over deal to sign £100m star
Manchester United have approached Brighton over a potential transfer deal to sign their £100m midfielder Carlos Baleba, according to reports. United have 'made contact' with Brighton via intermediaries to explore the conditions of a summer move, The Athletic's David Ornstein has reported. Posting the story on X, Ornstein credited Indykaila, with that transfer insider claiming Brighton want £90m plus 10m in add-ons to sell Baleba.
