Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka advanced to the semi-finals of the WTA Canadian Open on Tuesday with a comprhensive 6-2, 6-2 triumph over 10th seed Elina Svitolina.
Osaka, chasing her first WTA Tour-level title since the 2021 Australian Open, needed only 68 minutes to dispatch the Ukraine star and book a Wednesday semi-final with Danish 16th seed Clara Tauson, who stunned reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys 6-1, 6-4.
"I'm just having a lot of fun playing. I'm glad to be here," Osaka said. "I think I'll be seeded in the US Open because I won my match. That was a really good goal for me. I'm just really excited."
Tauson dedicated her victory to her late grandfather, who died on Sunday as the Dane was dispatching Polish second seed Iga Swiatek, who won her sixth Grand Slam title last month at Wimbledon.
"Two days ago, my grandfather unfortunately passed away so I really wanted to win for him today," a tearful Tauson said after beating US sixth seed Keys.
"I was told the day after I beat Iga so I really wanted to come out and show my best tennis for him. Hopefully he's watching."
The US Open hardcourt tuneup in Montreal is the first event where Tauson has beaten two top-10 foes, with Swiatek and Keys exiting at her hand.
Tauson dominated the opening set and took full advantage of Keys giving up a break on a double fault to open the second. The Dane won 12 of 19 points on her second serves and kept Keys at bay most of the night.
Keys joined a scrap heap of Montreal seeds, with the top five seeds and seven of the top 10 seeds ousted before the quarter-finals.
Tauson, 22, seeks her fourth career WTA title after the 2021 Lyon and Luxenbourg Opens and this year's Auckland Open, where Osaka retired after winning the first set of the final in their only WTA meeting.
"She's really tough," Osaka said of Tauson. "I played her in Auckland this year. I had to stop halfway because I was injured. So I'm really excited that I'm healthy."
First title as a mom?
Osaka seeks her eighth WTA-level title, and her first since a maternity leave comeback last year. She last won a WTA-level title below the Grand Slams at the 2019 China Open.
Osaka broke for a 3-1 edge in the opening set and exchanged breaks in the last three games to capture the set after 38 minutes, then cruised through the second set, taking the triumph when Svitolina hit a forehand wide.
Tauson is one win away from her second WTA 1000 final, having lost the first in February at Dubai to Mirra Andreeva.
The Dane dominated Keys in the first set, breaking in the fourth and sixth games, and Keys double faulted away another break to begin the second set.
Tauson held from there to win, never facing a break point in the second set before holding at love in the last game to end matters after 70 minutes.
Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, and 18-year-old Canadian sensation Victoria Mboko will meet in Wednesday's other semi-final.
Rybakina won their only prior meeting 6-3, 7-5 last month in the second round at Washington.

Tennis: Canadian teen Mboko outlasts Osaka to win WTA Montreal crown - Omni sports

Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko conquered four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Thursday, capping a fairytale run at the WTA Canadian Open with her first WTA title. Mboko, 18 and playing in her first WTA final, denied Osaka her first tour-level title since the 2021 Australian Open, wearing down the Japanese star, 27, who has struggled to find consistency since returning from maternity leave early in 2024. Mboko, who was ranked outside the top 300 to start the season and had climbed to 85th entering the week, is now projected to rise to 34th in the world. Before an ecstatic center-court crowd of 11,000, she converted eight of her nine break points, seizing her fourth win of the week over a Grand Slam winner. She ousted former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in the second round and toppled reigning French Open champion Coco Gauff in the fourth before saving a match point en route to a semi-final victory over former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina. "It feels unbelievable right now," Mboko said, adding that "words cannot really describe how the day went." It started with an MRI on the right wrist she injured in the semi-finals, and ended with a come-from-behind victory over one of her childhood heroes and a final ovation from delirious fans who have taken her to their hearts. "I think when I had that winning moment and seeing so many people standing up and cheering for me, it was kind of a surreal experience," Mboko said. "I would never have thought that something like this would have come so suddenly. "I think it just proves that your dreams are closer than you think they are." Displaying vintage power and precision, Osaka gave her inexperienced opponent little room to maneuver in the first set, gaining an early break on the way to a 3-0 lead and pocketing the set when Mboko, who had 22 unforced errors in the set, misfired on two forehands to drop her serve a second time. Mboko turned the tide in a second set that featured seven breaks of serve. Osaka looked bewildered as Mboko ramped up the pressure, the Canadian breaking her at love for a 5-2 lead. Serving for the set, however, Mboko coughed up three double faults and was broken. Osaka capitalized on the reprieve with a hold at love, but Mboko took the set in the next game when Osaka sailed a forehand long on set point. Osaka appeared demoralized as she was broken at love to open the third set. Mboko, who had 13 double faults in the match, couldn't consolidate the break. 'Allez Vicky' But Osaka was on the ropes again in the third game, drawing a warning for batting a ball skyward in frustration after missing her first serve on break point -- which she surrendered with another errant forehand. That launched a run of five straight games for Mboko. Winners were proving hard to come by for both players, and when the Canadian saved four break points to hold for a 3-1 lead, Osaka had a mountain to climb that finally proved too steep. When Osaka smacked a backhand into the net on match point, Mboko dropped to the court as the crowd -- who had backed her all the way with chants of "Allez Vicky" -- roared one more ovation. Osaka, who came into the tournament ranked 49th in the world, had appeared energized in Montreal after a coaching shakeup. But she couldn't maintain her positive attitude as Mboko pulled away for the win. "It's kind of funny. This morning I was very grateful. I don't know why my emotions flipped so quickly, but I'm happy to have played in the final," she said. "I think Victoria played really well," added Osaka, who was so dejected she neglected to offer her congratulations at the trophy presentation. While Mboko will skip the Cincinnati Open that started, Thursday, Osaka was looking forward to seeing how she responds in the final tuneup for the US Open. "I felt like I could have played better, but I'm not really sure which aspect... it's going to be interesting to see what my next match is and how I'm going to play." Tennis: Sinner lukewarm on expanded Cincinnati format - Omni sports

Jannik Sinner on Wednesday gave tepid approval to the 12-day jumbo version of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Masters while confessing that he would actually prefer to keep the event to the usual one week length. The world number one will be defending his title at the final big event prior to the August 24 start of the US Open. Extending the ongoing Canada event - and Cincinnati - to 12 days with 96-player draws also means that WTA and ATP events in Canada will stage unorthodox finals on Thursday while play is beginning in Cincinnati. Sinner said that given the choice he would opt for the classic system of one-week events for an increasingly crowded calendar. "We (top players) cannot control everything," the Italian said. "The fans now have two weekends to hopefully watch some good tennis. "That is exactly what we need in this sport." But the Wimbledon champion who skipped Canada to rest after his triumph two weeks earlier in the final at the All England Club over Carlos Alcaraz added: "I would prefer a one-week event, it's something that I like. "But it's OK, I'm here and I'm very happy." Other top 10 players, including Novak Djokovic and Alex de Minaur, have also complained in recent days about the wholesale calendar rewrite which has the enthusiastic endorsement of the ATP and WTA. Sinner said that he enjoyed his time away from the courts, spending time at home with family and friends. "Then it was back to practice to try and get as ready as possible for the US swing." He said Wimbledon, where he beat Alcaraz after losing to the Spaniard at Roland Garros, "felt very, very special."
