Best AFC 2025 NFL Draft picks
USA TODAY's Tyler Dragon breaks down which teams in the AFC drafted the best this year.
Sports Seriously
The Pittsburgh Steelers offense is making a colossal shift in 2025.
The quarterback room has been overhauled. They moved on from veteran quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
They brought back former third-round pick Mason Rudolph in free agency. They also drafted Will Howard from Ohio State in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
In early March, Pittsburgh acquired wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. They didn't stop there, trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a package that includes a third-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Aaron Rodgers may still sign with the team, as he was spotted training with Metcalf earlier in the offseason. However, there have been no recent updates regarding his decision.
So how will that new-look offense stack up against Pittsburgh's 2025 slate? Here's a look at the schedule for the Steelers in 2025.

Steelers record prediction 2025
Record prediction: 8-9
All signs point toward the Steelers' historic run of finishes at .500 or better ending in 2025.
The AFC North is a challenging division each season. Currently, the Ravens are the team to beat, led by the dynamic duo of Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. The Bengals have one of the best offenses in the NFL and can compete with anyone. Fortunately for Pittsburgh, the Browns are currently in a more complex rebuild.
Some still expect Aaron Rodgers to sign with the Steelers, but in order to predict the Steelers' record for 2025, we need to focus on the players who are currently on the roster. Considering their current quarterbacks, it may be challenging for the team to maintain regular-season success in the upcoming season.
Pittsburgh boasts a strong defensive lineup, highlighted by perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate T.J. Watt. He, along with Cam Heyward, Alex Highsmith, Patrick Queen, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Joey Porter Jr., form the team's core. With the 21st overall pick in the first round, the Steelers selected defensive tackle Derrick Harmon to strengthen the unit further.
They have a championship-caliber defense, but the offense could struggle mightily.
To make matters worse, Pittsburgh has the 24th-hardest schedule in 2025, per Sharp Football Analysis. That said, a team coached by Mike Tomlin can never be counted out.
The Steelers face challenging road matchups against the Lions and Chargers. Additionally, they will play at Soldier Field against a Bears team expected to show significant improvement. At home, they will host the Bills, Dolphins, Packers and Vikings, teams that likely have the upper hand.
Overall, the Steelers' 2025 schedule does not offer many easy victories. However, they will likely compete with their run-heavy offense, supported by their strong defense.

Roger Goodell sees Apple and Google, not NBA and MLB, as NFL's competition
Once upon a time, the NFL competed with other American sports. Once upon a time, the NFL competed poorly with other American sports. Now, the NFL doesn't even view other American sports as competition. A recent email regarding Ken Belson's upcoming book — EVERY DAY IS SUNDAY: How Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft, and Roger Goodell Turned the NFL into a Cultural & Economic Juggernaut — shares a quote Commissioner Roger Goodell private made in the aftermath of Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. 'We're not competing with the NBA or MLB,' Goodell said. 'Our competitors are Apple and Google.' He's right, even if the NFL is doing business with Google and could soon be doing business with Apple. The NFL keeps growing. Its influence expands to business beyond football. It's the one thing that can consistently attract millions to watch an event live, from the significant (like the Super Bowl) to the trivial (like the Hall of Fame game). Even the draft, which could be done via group text, has been shaped into must-see TV and a live event that draws hundreds of thousands to witness, well, not much of anything. Regardless of where the NFL goes from here, it has left other American sports in the dust. And, yes, it is targeting much bigger fish. There's another competitor that Goodell didn't mention. On the surface, it seems ridiculous to even discuss. But the NFL surely hopes to chase, and to catch, soccer. Yes, it's ridiculous. At least as ridiculous as it would have been to suggest that pro football will catch Major League Baseball in the '30s, '40s, and '50s.

Former NFL QB Sounds off on Commanders in Fiery Rant
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With the start of the 2025 season just around the corner, the Washington Commanders remain caught up in one of the biggest off-field storylines in the NFL. As extension talks with Terry McLaurin continue to drag on, one former player did not hold back when giving his thoughts on the organization. Prior to the arrival of quarterback Jayden Daniels, McLaurin was the foundational piece of the Commanders' offense. He's arguably been one of the league's most consistent wide receivers, stacking up five straight seasons of at least 1,000 yards. McLaurin has been eager to secure a new deal with the Commanders this offseason, but the two sides have failed to work out an agreement. This led to the veteran wideout putting in a trade request last week, but Washington made it clear they have no plans of honoring it. Photo by/Getty Images Dan Orlovsky goes on fiery rant about the Washington Commanders During Monday's episode of First Take on ESPN, Dan Orlovsky weighed in on the Commanders as things with McLaurin remain unresolved. He sounded off on the organization, labeling it one of the most head-scratching situations of the offseason. "You can't trade him. This is one of the dumbest things that has been apart of the NFL this offseason. It's one of the most maddening situations that I have been watching this NFL offseason, it ain't that hard," Orlovsky said. "Respectfully, Washington you were a dumpster fire for years. You were a laughing stock. The only thing good about your organization was that young you don't have him, you erase everything that you did that last year." "Respectfully Washington, you were a dumpster fire for years. ... The only thing good about your organization was [Terry McLaurin]." —@danorlovsky7 on McLaurin's contract negotiations being "one of the dumbest" NFL offseason situations 😅 — First Take (@FirstTake) August 4, 2025 There is no denying that McLaurin was a driving force in the Commanders' success last year, racking up a career-high 13 touchdowns. As a viable deep threat capable of breaking off a big play at any moment, he certainly made life easier for Daniels as a rookie trying to find his footing in the NFL. Also read: New Developments Echo Unlikeliness Of a Terry McLaurin Trade Coming off a season where they nearly reached the Super Bowl, the Commanders are eager to remain in the hunt for a title. However, they won't be able to do that if they don't have an engaged and focused McLaurin. Seeing that the Commanders are entertaining trades, it remains a mystery when the front office and McLaurin will work out a deal and put this dragged-out saga behind them. Panthers RB Rico Dowdle looks to prove he's worthy of being NFL starter after leaving Cowboys
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers weren't necessary looking to add a starting-caliber running back in free agency after giving Chuba Hubbard a four-year, $33 million contract extension last November. They found one anyway. Coach Dave Canales said he's been "ecstatic" since the Panthers signed Rico Dowdle in March, giving the team added depth in the backfield with a second 1,000-yard rusher. In so doing, they've added a highly motivated player who's eager to prove that he's still worthy of being a No. 1 back — and being paid like one — after the Dallas Cowboys opted not to re-sign him. 'I definitely thought I would have had the opportunity to get a shot with the ones this year, but it didn't come down to that,' Dowdle said of his time on the free-agent market. Some running back-needy teams opted for the draft to fill their needs rather than sign the 27-year-old Dowdle. So he chose to bet on himself, agreeing to a one-year, $2.75 million contract with the Panthers that could pay him up to $6 million with performance incentives. Dowdle hopes that if all goes well he can parlay his success into a big contract next spring. In the meantime, he felt Carolina, with an improving offensive line led by highly paid guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis, was the best fit for him. It also afforded him the opportunity to return to the Carolinas where he played high school football in Asheville, North Carolina, and college ball at South Carolina. 'Great to be home,' he said with a smile. Despite rushing for 1,079 yards and averaging 4.6 yards per carry and catching 39 passes for 249 yards and totaling five TDs in his first year as a starter, the Cowboys didn't express much interest in re-signing Dowdle despite a late-season surge that included three straight 100-yard rushing games. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones instead drafted Jaydon Blue from Texas in the fifth round and signed veteran free agents Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, who was Hubbard's backup last season. 'To have two 1,000-yard backs in the same room and guys with experience, guys who can really do it all — can pass protect really well, catch the ball out of the backfield, I mean I was ecstatic," Canales said. "When we were kind of working through things (in free agency) and it starting looking like we were going to have a chance to get this guy, I couldn't have been more excited." Hubbard remains the starter in Carolina, coming off a career-high 1,195 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns in 2024 — despite sitting out the final two games. But Canales sees a role for the 5-foot-11, 215-pound Dowdle, although he was sparse on the details. Dowdle could have to compete for reps with fourth-round draft pick Trevor Etienne from Georgia, who has looked strong and fast in training camp. Carolina selected Texas' Jonathon Brooks in the second round in 2024, but he'll miss the entire season after reinjuring his ACL as a rookie. 'He's exactly what we're looking for out of our running backs,' Canales said of Dowdle. 'Our backs, they run the runs exactly the way they're supposed to be run — with discipline. And once they get past that first level they run with violence. (Dowdle) does those things.' Dowdle would love to parlay a big season into a big paycheck. But for now he said he's here to help the Panthers win. He's in a familiar position, having to prove himself all over — just as he had to do coming into the league as an undrafted rookie in 2020. 'Coming from the position of being undrafted and obviously having to make the roster every, every year, I always feel like I got something to prove," Dowdle said. 'And I will have something to prove until I get to where I wanna go.' Browns to visit The Panthers practiced Tuesday in a downpour and more rain is in the forecast for Wednesday's joint practice with the Cleveland Browns. Despite the weather, Canales said he expects practices to go on as expected with plenty of full-contact drills and live hitting. ___ AP NFL:
