Brawl Between Priest, Police Official Over Loudspeaker During Kanpur Rath Yatra, Cop Suspended
The dispute erupted between police and the priest over the installation of additional sound systems for the procession.
A dispute broke out between a temple priest and a police officer after the latter allegedly misbehaved with the priest over the installation of loudspeakers during Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra in Uttar Pradesh' Kanpur on Friday.
The priest, Mahant Jitendra Das of Panki Hanuman Temple, had allegedly threatened to self-immolate if police didn't allow the Rath Yatra to proceed without removing additional sound systems. This prompted the senior officials to place station officer of the Badshahi Naka police station under suspension, news agency PTI reported.
According to Mahant Jitendra Das and Krishna Das of Jagannath temple, before the Rath Yatra could begin, police officials arrived and instructed that only two speakers should be used in the band. Organisers opposed this and during the conversation, the police allegedly misbehaved with them.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Satyajit Gupta said that Station Officer (Badshahi Naka) Rajiv Kumar has been put under suspension for allegedly misbehaving with Das and also abusing him.
'We have had a conversation with Yatra coordinators. The SHO of Badshahi Naka has allegedly attempted misconduct and hurled abuses. It was said that until he is suspended, 'Shobha Yatra' will not be started… Keeping all this in consideration, I will be taking action for suspension…," he said.
He further appealed the organisers and devotees to continue with the Rath Yatra as it was already delayed.
'We have made an appeal to the mahant, devotees and others to take out the Jagannath Rath Yatra without removing the additional sound systems as it is already delayed and the removal of the additional sound systems will lead to a further delay. A request has also been made to maintain peace and not pay attention to rumours," the DCP added.
As a precautionary measure, reserved police forces and personnel from neighbouring police stations were deployed along the procession route.
What's The Row?
The dispute erupted between police and the priest over the installation of additional sound systems for the procession. According to local residents, devotees got anguished over the demand, following which they sat on a dharna at Nayaganj.
Das told reporters that the officer, along with police personnel from Nayaganj, arrived at the spot and asked them to carry only two speakers with the procession, when they were preparing to take out the Jagannath Rath Yatra at 1 pm.
'When we opposed this, saying no senior official had issued any such instruction, the police personnel misbehaved with us," he said.
Irked by the alleged misbehaviour of the police personnel, supporters of the priest started raising slogans against police. Officials tried to pacify the priest and his supporters, but they were adamant on their demand that the SO should be placed under suspension.
The priest had gave an ultimatum that if no action was taken against the erring police personnel by 8 pm, he would set himself on fire, which prompted top officials to swing into action.
The Jagannath Rath Yatra was taken out around 8 pm, after the SO was suspended.

Jagannath Rath Yatra stampede: Eye witnesses recall horror; ex-CM Patnaik blames 'incompetence' for deaths
Three devotees died and over 50 others were injured in a deadly stampede near the Gundicha Temple in Puri, Odisha, during the annual Rath Yatra festival on Sunday morning. The incident unfolded between 4 and 5 am as thousands of pilgrims had gathered to witness the rituals when chaos broke out, reportedly due to two ritual trucks entering a congested area. Also read: 3 dead, 50 injured in stampede near Puri's Gundicha Temple Officials identified the deceased as Premakant Mohanty (80), Basanti Sahoo (36), and Prabhati Das (42). While the situation was later brought under control, the tragedy has drawn sharp criticism over the failure in crowd management, with eyewitnesses blaming poor planning and VIP arrangements for the chaos. The state government has launched an investigation, and Odisha's Director General of Police (DGP) Y B Khurania was sent to the spot to take stock. This is the first time such a fatal incident has occurred near the Gundicha Temple during Rath Yatra. Eyewitness accounts point to chaos and mismanagement Several eyewitnesses recounted scenes of utter confusion and mismanagement. Swadhin Kumar Panda, a local resident, said, 'I was there near the temple till 23 am last night, but the management was not good. A new way was made for VIPs, and common people were asked to exit from a distance. People started exiting from the entrance itself, which increased the crowd.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What Does My Family Name Mean? beenverified Sign Up Undo He added that unauthorised vehicles had entered the restricted zones near the temple, worsening the situation. 'There was no police or administration present at night… The Odisha administration is responsible for this,' he said. Another grieving man who lost his wife in the stampede said no fire, rescue, or hospital officials responded promptly. 'This is a pathetic incident that cannot be expressed,' he said. Law Minister confirms deaths, promises action Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan confirmed that three people died due to suffocation and six to seven were seriously injured. 'It is an unfortunate incident. We are taking note of that. I spoke with the CM this morning. We are taking stringent action,' he told ANI, adding that the DGP had been dispatched to the site. 'The situation is now under control and the people are having darshan,' Harichandan said. He stated that additional police had been deployed and an investigation was underway. 'We are trying our best to manage the crowd,' he said, assuring that he was personally monitoring the situation and would take necessary steps to avoid a repeat. Former CM Patnaik slams 'glaring incompetence' Former Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik issued a strongly worded statement, criticising the current administration's failure to ensure safety. 'Today's stampede, occurring just a day after the abysmal failure of crowd management during the Rath Yatra that left hundreds injured, exposes the government's glaring incompetence,' he wrote on X. He also said the initial response came not from officials but from devotees' relatives. 'While I refrain from accusing the government of criminal negligence, their blatant callousness has undeniably contributed to this tragedy,' he said, urging immediate corrective measures for upcoming rituals like Adapa Bije and Bahuda Yatra. Chariot procession overwhelmed by crowd, trucks blamed The stampede reportedly began when two trucks carrying ritual materials entered the already packed area near the chariots. Eyewitness Chinmay Patra said, 'The narrow congregation site, combined with limited police presence and scattered palmlog ladders near the chariots, created hazardous conditions for devotees.' The chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra had reached the Gundicha Temple on Saturday, one day after the Rath Yatra commenced. Local resident Debasis Das said that the pulling of Lord Jagannath's chariot had already faced delays due to crowd pressure. 'Sunday's tragedy was a devastating repeat,' he said. Health emergency: Hundreds fall ill, 12 in ICU On Saturday, a day before the stampede, over 750 people reportedly suffered from exhaustion and heatrelated issues due to the massive turnout. Around 230 devotees were admitted to the Infectious Disease Hospital and another 520 to the district headquarters hospital, with 12 admitted to ICU. One critically ill patient was shifted to SCB Medical College in Cuttack.

Jagannath Rath Yatra: Three killed, over 50 injured in stampede outside Puri's Gundicha temple
BHUBANESWAR/ PURI: Three devotees, including two women, lost their lives and six others sustained injuries in a stampede that broke out in front of the Gundicha Temple in Puri during the early hours of Sunday. The incident occurred between 3:30 am and 4:30 am after the chariot-pulling ritual of the Rath Yatra concluded and all three chariots were parked in front of the Gundicha Temple. According to officials, two victims died on the spot, while the third succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Puri Collector Sidharth Shankar Swain confirmed the deaths to the media, stating that six others were admitted to the Puri district headquarters hospital. Three of them have since been discharged. The deceased were identified as Basanti Sahu (36) of Bolagarh, Pravati Das (45) of Balipatna, and Prema Kant Mohanty (78) of Khurda. How it happened The tragedy unfolded when the morning rituals known as pahada bhanga began, drawing a sudden surge of devotees eager to catch a glimpse of the deities atop the chariots. The crowd swelled in front of Lord Jagannath's chariot, Nandighosa, resulting in people falling over each other in the chaos. Eyewitnesses reported that local residents were the first to respond, helping transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Several people slammed the poor crowd control measures in place, especially given the overnight congregation of pilgrims. The situation spiraled out of control when the pahada bhanga ritual commenced. Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan is reported to have briefed Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on the incident, while Director General of Police Y.B. Khurania rushed to Puri to assess the situation. On Saturday, the three chariots had reached Gundicha Temple at around 1:30 pm after resuming the chariot-pulling that had remained incomplete the previous day. Authorities had already acknowledged that this year's Rath Yatra witnessed 1.5 times the usual number of attendees. Sources said the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration had decided to conduct the Adapa Mandap Bije rituals on Sunday, which meant the deities remained atop the chariots overnight. 'Generally, pahada is not performed at night since a large number of devotees gather to see the deities atop the chariots. However, the ritual was conducted between 1:30 am and 2:00 am. News of early morning darshan led to a sudden influx of pilgrims that overwhelmed the available security and crowd control measures,' said sources. Family members of one of the victims expressed their anger over the alleged mismanagement. 'We reached Gundicha Temple after 3:30 am and there was a massive rush. But there were no police personnel to control the crowd. I lost my wife only because of the authorities' negligence,' said the grieving kin. Locals also reported that a truck carrying ladders used for the chariots arrived near the temple just as the crowd was swelling, adding to the chaos.
