Eilis O'Hanlon: ‘The government should have hired the Queen Vic builders to put up the National Children's Hospital'

The Queen Vic went up for auction in EastEnders (BBC One, Monday, 7.30pm) this week. For those who've been living under a rock since 1985, that is the pub in Albert Square which has been the scene of some of the soap's most iconic moments, including at least three murders I can recall offhand, not to mention two Brannings falling off the roof seven years apart.

EastEnders fans SWITCH OFF slamming 'worst episode' as backlash grows to controversial pregnancy storyline "EastEnders was actually my dream job, I've wanted to be in that show for years. "If I could throw a wish out there it would be that Emma could come back to see Lexi (her granddaughter)." Advertisement Meanwhile, Danny is rumoured to be plotting his own comeback as Mick Carter. Danny claimed to have thrown in the towel three years ago because he couldn't believe his character got paired up with Charlie Brooks' Janine and got her pregnant. Best soap affair love triangles LOVE triangles are a fundamental part of soap-land, but which ones have become the most iconic? EASTENDERS Bradley/Stacey/Max: Stacey Slater began an affair with boyfriend Bradley Branning's dad Max in 2007. Despite their romps, Stacey still married Bradley, but their deceit came out in an iconic Christmas Day episode that year. Grant/Sharon/Phil: Heading even further back in Walford history, EastEnders fans were gripped in the 90s as Sharon Watts had a one-night stand with her brother-in-law Phil Mitchell. Sharon confided in best friend Michelle Fowler - not realising it was caught on tape - and her husband Grant eventually found out and played it in front of everyone at the Queen Vic. Syed/Amira/Christian: Syed Masood was engaged to Amira before realising he had feelings for another man, Christian, which he confessed to him on his wedding day. A devout Muslim, Syed refused to admit his true sexuality and went ahead and married Amira anyway, but when they returned, the two men started an affair before being caught in the act by Amira. CORONATION STREET Shelley/Peter/Lucy: Peter Barlow took the concept of a love triangle and ran with it in Coronation Street - extending it to bigamy. He was in a relationship with Shelley Unwin but started dating Lucy Richards, and quickly married her after she fell pregnant with his son, Simon. But it didn't stop him also marrying Shelley, but he was eventually caught when Lucy turned up in Weatherfield and the two women confronted him. Ken/Deidre/Mike: Back in 1982, Deirdre Barlow started sleeping with her husband's nemesis Mike Baldwin in secret, before confessing all a year later. When Mike turned up at the marital home, Deirdre was being throttled by her husband who then kicked her out, but years later they reconciled. Maria/Aidan/Eva: In 2017, Aidan Connor started sleeping with girlfriend Eva Price's best friend, Maria Connor. Eva eventually found out and she decided to take revenge by faking a pregnancy, spending his money and planned to confront him on their wedding day. But she had a change of heart when a remorseful Aidan confessed, and decided to marry him anyway, only for Maria to arrive and expose her fake pregnancy. EMMERDALE Ross/Debbie/Pete: Debbie Dingle found herself torn between two brothers, Ross and Pete Barton in 2015 in Emmerdale. She eventually decided to marry Pete but yet again, a soap wedding day was ruined when the groom learned of his bride's betrayal via a recording played at the wedding. Chrissie/Robert/Aaron: Robert Sugden was married to Chrissie White and all seemed well - until he began a steamy affair with Aaron Dingle. Robert's ex Katie Sugden almost exposed the affair - but fell to her death before she had the chance. However, a guilty Aaron eventually cracked and told Chrissie about the affair - after which she announced it to the whole pub. Talking on Sky's Smart TV he said: "Mick's got a kid with Janine, how mad's that? That's why I left. "They f*ing put me with Janine, I thought I've gotta fk off! It's the truth!" Advertisement However, he later revealed: 'I was off my nut a lot of that job . . . a lot of Valium and diazepam.' He accused show chiefs of a lack of duty of care for the cast, and also said show bosses tried to stop him from drinking real beer while filming in the Queen Vic pub. But at the NTAs, Danny said: "Bring Mick back, which is the character I played in EastEnders. "So I could be back for it. You never found my body, f*** knows where I am - bring Mick back!" Advertisement Could a double return be on the cards? The new EastEnders boss Ben Wadey has already brought back some iconic characters, such as Zoe Slater and Oscar Branning. And even more returns are in the pipeline - from the likes of Max Branning, Ben Mitchell and Anthony Fox. However, fuming EastEnders fans have recently threatened to switch off their TVs as backlash grows over a controversial pregnancy twist. Advertisement Suki's (Balvinder Sopal) twisted plan to manipulate Avani (Aaliyah James) into having a baby – just so she can raise it herself - has received a huge public backlash. Viewers are slamming the storyline as 'unrealistic' and 'garbage', with some even vowing to ditch the soap for good. To make matters worse, Patrick (Rudolph Walker) suddenly spiralled into a gambling problem, despite two decades of betting without a hitch. Viewers were left scratching their heads and branding the writing "tedious" and "a challenge to watch." Advertisement Can the soap win viewers back? Strictly star finds love with boxer after being linked to dance pro

A STRICTLY Come Dancing star has found love with a boxer after being linked with a BBC show pro. The Paralympian, 32, has showcased her new romance in a cute video posted to her Instagram grid. 6 A Strictly Come Dancing star has found love with a boxer after being linked with a BBC One show pro Credit: Instagram/laurensteadmann 6 Paralympian Lauren Steadman was paired with AJ Pritchard in 2018 Credit: . 6 Yet she's now found love with boxer Bradley Credit: Instagram/laurensteadmann It showed her stripped to a blue bikini holding her man's hand as they strolled into the crystal-clear sea in Sardinia. Back in 2019, Lauren Steadman, 32, was linked to her Strictly partner AJ Pritchard after their "romantic" routines on-stage. Yet now Lauren, who reached the semi-final of the 2018 series with AJ, has found love with a boxer known as Bradley. He appears to keep a low profile not being tagged on her account, yet he appears in both their sweet holiday clip and a post showing them boxing together. Lauren wrote in her holiday caption: "Pausing to make time. "It actually looks like Bradley is just entertaining my morning waffle. "Between my training and his boxing coaching time has been limited but 20mins every morning at the beach has been well worth it." Her followers were quick to react to the post, which showed the pair loved up and holding hands. One wrote: " Awwwwwww my sweeetiee piessss." Lauren Steadman and DJ Locksmith are crowned as co-winner of Channel 4's Celebrity SAS- Who Dares Wins A second put: "This makes me happy. Just saying." A third then gushed: "Great news!!!!!" MOVING ON Since Strictly, Lauren went on to be crowned a co-winner of gritty reality series Celeb SAS. Yet prior to this, she and AJ had been wowing audiences around the country for the last few weeks with their routines as part of the Strictly live tour. After Lauren and AJ performed their touching Viennese Waltz to You Are The Reason by Calum Scott, judge at the time Darcey Bussell praised Lauren on how much her dancing had improved. She then added they had brought "plenty of romance" to their performance, which appeared to make the pair blush and squirm a little. Host Ore Oduba then added fuel to the fire, saying Darcey was "reading between the dance lines", causing the audience to 'ooh', 'ahh' and whistle their approval. It wasn't the first time AJ and Lauren had been romantically linked, as during their series, AJ hinted there could be more than friendship between them. He told The Mirror at the time: "I am very protective of her because we have worked so closely together. 'There are different things that she will talk about in training that she would never talk about on camera." Yet the world champion Paralympic athlete had her eyes on the prize as she celebrated "normalising disabilities" on the prime time BBC show. She and dance partner AJ often had to find new ways to do routines because Lauren was born missing her lower right arm. Alongside this, Lauren had to compete against celebrities like Ashley Roberts and Faye Tozer who were already professionally-trained dancers. 6 The pair captured their romantic getaway to Sardinia on Instagram Credit: Instagram/laurensteadmann 6 Lauren and AJ were praised for their 'romantic' routines

Coronation Street hits back in soap pub wars as they sign up hunky Hollywood star as new landlord

The star is a familiar face to viewers and will make his debut later this year CORRIE BLIMEY! Coronation Street hits back in soap pub wars as they sign up hunky Hollywood star as new landlord WHEN EastEnders legends Kat and Alfie Moon were reinstated as bosses of the Queen Vic, Coronation Street bosses could easily have felt wrong-footed. Instead, in an epic battle of the soap bars, they've hit back by putting new management in place at the Rovers Return in the form of Cath Tyldesley and a very sexy new landlord. Cath's character left the ITV show seven years ago, and is making a spectacular return to the cobbles this week to make scenes that will be shown this autumn. By her side will be Aaaron who starred opposite Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury's boyfriend, Jim Hutton, in the film Bohemian Rhapsody. He also played Jamie Maguire in Channel 4's Shameless. A TV insider said: "Corrie bosses were never going to take EastEnders shrewd decision to reinstate Kat and Alfie at the Vic lying down. Advertisement "So they took their time looking for the perfect actor to play her husband to Eva as she makes her return to Corrie as the new boss of the Rovers. "When Aaron walked in, and once paired with Catherine, bosses knew they had the perfect partnership to run the soap's iconic pub. "Aaron will bring his Irish charm to the pub, and the chemistry between him and Cath is electric. They are both very happy and loved-up. Advertisement Kat Moon takes over the Queen Vic: A new era in EastEnders 4 Kat and Alfie have taken over the Queen Vic in EastEnders Credit: BBC But Aaron's character is also someone not to be messed with, and the locals are going to be in for a shock if they think they can take advantage of his good nature and that cheeky Irish charm. It's the start of an exciting new chapter in the pub's history.'
