Andhra Pradesh attracted ₹9.5 lakh crore investments in 11 months: Lokesh

The Hindu2 days ago

Minister for HRD Nara Lokesh on Wednesday claimed that the NDA-led government under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu achieved in 11 months what the previous YSRCP regime could not in five years—attracting a record ₹9.5 lakh crore worth of investments with the potential to generate over 8.5 lakh jobs.
Chairing a high-level meeting at his Undavalli residence with his cabinet colleagues and senior bureaucrats on employment generation, Lokesh—who also heads the Cabinet Committee on Employment Generation—said 78 major industrial proposals worth ₹9.2 lakh crore and 1,19,580 MSME proposals worth ₹13,895 crore have been signed since the coalition assumed power.
He emphasized continuous monitoring of projects through sector-specific Project Monitoring Units (PMUs) within the Economic Development Board (EDB), especially for key investors such as NTPC, BPCL, Reliance and Tata Power.
Highlighting opportunities in beach tourism, Mr. Lokesh called for speedy permissions and infrastructure support for luxury projects like Oberoi and Varun Beach Sands in Visakhapatnam. He directed officials to accelerate land and utility allotment for renewable energy projects and urged exploration in beach sand and coal gasification mining.
The Minister also underscored the need for a strong skill-based ecosystem to train youth for emerging industries and instructed the integration of WhatsApp governance to fast-track investor approvals. He proposed linking MSMEs with the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) to enhance job creation.
Among those present were Ministers Ponguru Narayana (Municipal Administration and Urban Development), Kandula Durgesh (Tourism), T.G. Bharat (Industries), Kondapalli Srinivas (MSME), Kollu Ravindra (Mines and Geology) and Gottipati Ravi Kumar (Energy), along with senior officials N. Yuvaraj, Ajay Jain, Saikanth Varma, Katamneni Bhaskar, Abhishek Kishore, Kamalakar Babu and Praveen Kumar.

US lawmaker urges Pakistani delegation to wipe out 'vile' Jaish-e-Mohammed

A senior American lawmaker told a Bilawal Bhutto Zardari-led Pakistani delegation the US that Islamabad should do "all it can" to eliminate the "vile" terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed. Pakistan is also sending delegations to select countries to affirm its stance over terrorism, a move similar to India's global outreach program on Operation Sindoor and its anti-terror stand. The Zardari-led Pakistani delegation timed its visit to the US capital around the same time as the Indian delegation led by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, news agency PTI reported. The Pakistan delegation met with Congressman Brad Sherman in Washington on Thursday, with the leader taking to X to say that he highlighted to the Pakistani delegation the "importance of combatting terrorism, and in particular, the group Jaish-e-Mohammed, who murdered my constituent Daniel Pearl in 2002'. JeM terrorist Omar Saeed Sheikh was convicted of orchestrating the 2002 kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Sherman added that Pearl's family continues to live in his district and "Pakistan should do all it can to eliminate this vile group and combat terrorism in the region". Bhutto landed in the US at the same as the Tharoor-led Indian delegation. Bhutto and his allegation also met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres as well as Security Council Ambassadors in New York. They later travelled to Washington as part of their attempts to internationalise their conflict with India as well as the Kashmir issue. However, the delegation got instructed to deal with terrorism coming from its own soil. "Christians, Hindus and Ahmadiyya Muslims living in Pakistan must be allowed to practice their faith and participate in the democratic system without fear of violence, persecution, discrimination, or an unequal justice system," Sherman said. He further urged the Pakistani delegation to emphasise to their government the need to free Dr Shakil Afridi, who continues to remain imprisoned for having helped the US kill Osama bin Laden. "Freeing Dr Afridi represents an important step in bringing closure for victims 9/11," Sherman added. Afridi is a Pakistani physician who helped the CIA run a polio vaccination programme in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to collect DNA samples of bin Laden's family. Pakistani authorities arrested Afridi shortly after the American raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad in May 2011. In 2012, a Pakistani court sentenced Afridi to 33 years in prison.

Govt forms ministerial panel to oversee Puri Rath Yatra arrangements

Bhubaneswar: State govt has formed a high-powered ministerial committee, headed by deputy chief minister Pravati Parida, to supervise the arrangements for the June 27 Rath Yatra in Puri, according to a law department notification released on Friday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The committee comprises four cabinet ministers as members — Prithiviraj Harichandan (law), Mukesh Mahaling (health), Krushna Chandra Mahapatra (housing and urban development) and Bibhuti Bhusan Jena (commerce and transport). Law secretary Manas Ranjan Barik has been appointed as the convener, with Parida serving as the chairperson. "The committee's mandate includes supervising and guiding government-level arrangements for Rath Yatra, which anticipates attendance exceeding 10 lakh devotees. Smooth conduct of rituals, proper crowd management and convenience of devotees will be the focus areas," a senior govt official said. The govt is taking comprehensive measures, including plans to extend invitations to the President, Prime Minister, Union ministers and chief ministers of NDA-ruled states for the annual festival. The celebrations will take place two weeks after the BJP govt in Odisha marks its first anniversary on June 12, an occasion expected to draw prominent BJP members, including PM Narendra Modi. "We will leave nothing to chance to ensure inter-departmental coordination for an incident-free Rath Yatra celebration," the official said. Sources said the committee is likely to visit Puri in a day or two to oversee the preparations and discuss with various stakeholders as well as servitors of the Jagannath Temple.

NCP members' involvement in crimes will be discussed at anniversary event, says Sunil Tatkare

Pune: The dissolution of NCP's entire Beed district unit, the resignation of former Pune city unit chief Deepak Mankar, and the expulsion of Rajendra Hagawane, who was arrested in connection with his daughter-in-law's death, will be on the agenda for discussions when deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar-led party celebrates its 26th anniversary in Pune on June 10. Confirming this, state NCP president Sunil Tatkare on Friday said it is quite unfortunate that some office bearers were found to be involved in criminal activities, and police cases were also registered against them. "We have acted against such members but I feel that a person involved in crimes should not be associated with the party." After the split in 2023, both factions have been organising separate conventions to mark anniversaries in Pune since last year. This time, Ajit Pawar 's camp will hold its event at Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi, while NCP(SP) headed by Sharad Pawar has chosen Balgandharva Auditorium for its convention's venue. Tatkare said senior leadership has taken cognisance of all criminal cases involving party functionaries, and on June 10, they will reflect on them. "All members will be told not to indulge in any criminal activity, or they will face action even within the party." Amidst speculations of a possible merger of both factions, Tatkare said, "I am categorically saying that we have not received any such proposal. We have a core group within NCP which makes all the important decisions, and there has been no discussion on this topic." He further said his party is not deviating from its stand of being within NDA. "The discussion of joining NDA had been going on since 2014, and finally, the party collectively took a call to be part of the alliance under the leadership of Ajit Pawar. Now, those who support our stand and want to join us, we will welcome them." Earlier this year, NCP had to disband its Beed district unit after it came to light that some of the officer bearers were named in the FIR registered in connection with the Massajog sarpanch murder case. Mankar recently resigned from his post after a case of forgery was registered against him in Pune. The top brass expelled Hagawane from the party after he was named in the FIR related to the death of his daughter-in-law Vaishnavi. Later he was arrested.
