Meghalaya: Aspiring entrepreneurs trained in Jaintia Hills pottery craft

News186 days ago
Shillong, Jul 18 (PTI) Thirty aspiring entrepreneurs from Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills were trained in traditional Larnai pottery as part of a seven-day skill development programme aimed at preserving indigenous knowledge and promoting rural livelihoods, officials said.
Organised by the Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community and Skill Development Centre (DDUCC), Wahiajer, a constituent college of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), the programme titled 'Application of Indigenous Knowledge in Pottery Making' was held from July 12 to 18 at the DDUCC community hall.
Renowned artisan Roilin Pyrtuh from Larnai village, known for its centuries-old pottery tradition, led the training.
Larnai, located in West Jaintia Hills, is famous for its distinctive black pottery, crafted entirely by hand without the use of a potter's wheel.
The process includes traditional clay preparation, shaping, open-firing, and finishing techniques that have been passed down through generations.
Pyrtuh learned the craft from her mother, continuing a multi-generational family legacy.
Her family stands among the few still exclusively practising traditional techniques without mechanisation, crafting one-of-a-kind pottery entirely by hand.
The sessions focused on equipping them with livelihood skills while promoting cultural preservation and sustainable entrepreneurship.
The valedictory function held on July 18 was graced by NEHU pro vice-chancellor Prof. S. Umdor as chief guest, and Lukas Jat, member of Wahiajer village, as guest of honour.
Also in attendance were Dr. FR Sumer, principal in-charge, DDUCC; Latu Nartiang, branch manager of Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank, Ummulong; faculty, students, and community members.
Umdor commended the DDUCC team for promoting indigenous trades and encouraged participants to tap into opportunities in local markets and tourism.
He noted that the initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which integrates vocational education with academic learning.
Certificates of participation were awarded to all trainees. PTI JOP MNB

Ola & Uber Now Costlier In Mumbai, Here's Why Fares Just Jumped By 50 Percent

Last Updated: The fare surge means trips that once cost Rs 302.4 (like Andheri to Worli) will now cost Rs 453.6. Mumbaikars are now paying more for their daily app-based cab rides. In a recent development, fares have gone up by almost 50 percent, following the Maharashtra government's recommendation to increase per kilometre base rates for Ola and Uber. This comes after driver unions pushed for fairer earnings, claiming current fares are unsustainable, as per Mid-day. Earlier, Mumbai's base fare stood at Rs 16/km, but the latest recommendation bumps it up to Rs 24/km. Pune has seen a similar hike—from Rs 12/km to Rs 18/km. How Much More Are You Paying Now? Here's a break down of fare hike with some examples: Andheri to Worli (18.9 km): Fare increased from Rs 302.4 to Rs 453.6 Difference: Rs 151.2 Terminal 2 to Vashi (25 km): Fare increased from Rs 400 to Rs 600 Difference: Rs 200 Goregaon to Fort (33 km): Difference: Rs 328 The increase in fare aligns with the new base rate of Rs 24/km, significantly changing the cost of both short and long trips. Why the Sudden Hike? The decision follows weeks of protests and negotiations between driver unions and the government. Union leaders argued that the current rates made it difficult for drivers to make ends meet, especially with rising fuel and maintenance costs. The fare revision aims to offer more sustainable income for cab drivers. What's the Public Reaction? While drivers may benefit from this change, daily commuters and short-distance travellers might need to reconsider their budgets. For many, the fare increase could mean turning to public transport or carpooling more often. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 09:07 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Goa government to lay new optical fibre network to boost connectivity

Last Updated: Panaji, Jul 25 (PTI) The Goa government plans to lay a new optical fibre cable network across the coastal state to enhance internet connectivity and ensure digital access to every household, Information Technology Minister Rohan Khaunte has said. Responding to a question raised by independent MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye during the ongoing monsoon session of the state assembly, Khaunte said in a written reply on Thursday that the proposed network will form the backbone of the state's 'Har Ghar Fibre' initiative. 'The government is committed to providing affordable, high-speed internet connectivity to every household in Goa, enabling access to digital services in education, healthcare, e-governance, commerce and communication," Khaunte said. He added that the initiative is aligned with the Centre's Digital India programme and is aimed at bridging the digital divide, particularly in underserved areas. The project will be executed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model while also leveraging existing infrastructure such as the Goa Broadband Network and BharatNet to avoid redundancy, Khaunte said in his written reply. He said that the last-mile internet services will be delivered through licensed Internet Service Providers (ISPs), using shared or leased access to the network. Khaunte said the project will be rolled out in phases, and regions currently facing limited or no connectivity will get priority. 'Year-wise targets for implementation will be finalised following the tendering process and preparation of the execution roadmap," the minister added.
