HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A restaurant in Holyoke held a fundraiser on Saturday for the upcoming St. Patrick's Parade.
Mrs. Mitchell's Public House hosted a fundraiser in collaboration with the St. Patrick's Committee of Holyoke, donating 20% of all food orders to the upcoming parade.
Who won Holyoke's Battle of the Bars?
Families sat down for pancakes and bacon all to support one of the city's largest events. 22News spoke with the President of the Parade Committee, who told us how much the restaurant has supported the cause.
'Orla has been supportive of our crew for many, many years,' said Parade Committee President John Beaulieu. 'With the breakfast she does during Road Race weekend, parade weekend. We really, really appreciate her and her family for stepping up and doing this.'
Orla Mitchell opened this location just one year ago, serving Irish classics Tuesday through Sunday.
One of the members of this year's Colleen Court described what it meant to bring the community together just before the parade.
'It definitely is a very exciting time and it's great to see so many familiar faces come out and support this one fundraiser for the Parade Committee,' said Abigail Huebner of the Colleen Court. 'And just being a part of it is so great, seeing everybody here.'
In just two weeks, 400,000 people will line the city streets to watch floats roll down the streets of Holyoke. While the parade is the main attraction, Holyoke Colleen Court member Erin O'Donnell said there's something else to cherish about March 23.
'I think it's really more of the experience of going to the parade than it is watching the actual parade,' O'Donnell said. 'It's just fun to come together as a city and celebrate our Irish culture.'
For those who won't be attending in person, you will be able to watch full coverage of this year's Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade here on 22News.

Hundreds of protesters turn up to support Irish rapper as he appears in court on terror charge

A rapper from Irish language rap group Kneecap was greeted by hundreds of supporters waving flags and holding banners as he arrived in court on Wednesday morning on a terror charge. Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who performs as Mo Chara, has been accused of displaying a flag in support of the Lebanese group, Hezbollah who are a designated terror group in the UK. London's Metropolitan Police launched an investigation in April after a video surfaced online of Ó hAnnaidh allegedly displaying the flag during a London gig in 2024. Ó hAnnaidh has denied the charges, saying he does not support Hezbollah and called his prosecution a 'carnival of distraction' deflecting from current events in Gaza. A scrum with photographers broke out as Ó hAnnaidh arrived at London's Westminster Magistrates Court, alongside fellow bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh, as crowds waved Palestinian flags and chanted loudly, 'Free Mo Chara.' Ó hAnnaidh spoke to confirm his name, date of birth and address to the court at the start of the hearing. The court heard legal arguments, with Ó hAnnaidh's defense team seeking to throw the case out, arguing it was not brought within the legal limit of six months. Judge Paul Goldspring adjourned the case until September 26, when he will give his decision. The 27-year-old left court without entering a plea, and will be required to appear at the next hearing. Leaving the courthouse, he was met with chants of 'Drop the charges now' from his supporters. The investigation was launched shortly after an appearance by the band at the California music festival, Coachella, at which they projected messages onstage about Israel's war in Gaza. On Tuesday evening, police announced public order restrictions on the protests in order to 'prevent serious disruption,' confining gatherings to a designated area outside the court. From early on Wednesday morning, crowds of protesters congregated outside the central London court. Speaking to CNN, one supporter, Mike McCusker, 62, said he had been following Kneecap since 2019. 'I've seen them a dozen times, they've always stood against oppression,' he said. Kneecap, who rap mainly in Irish, have steadily built up an international fanbase, gaining praise for their efforts to revitalize the Irish language. Formed in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 2017, the band have sought to modernize the language through their rap songs depicting their experiences growing up in the wake of a decades long sectarian conflict, the Troubles. Laden with references to drug and alcohol use and critiques of the British government, the band's music has made them no stranger to controversy over the years. In 2024, the trio released their second studio album 'Fine Art' and a self-titled semi-autobiographical feature film which won acclaim from critics and scooped up awards at both the British Independent Film Awards and the Sundance Film Festival. The band have been long-time advocates for the rights of Palestinians. Their performance at UK music festival Glastonbury in June became mired in controversy after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the group should not have been allowed to perform in light of the charges faced by Ó hAnnaidh. The group are next set to play at several more European festivals this summer before a headline gig in London's Wembley Arena on September 18. CNN's Sophie Tanno contributed reporting.

Cranberries bandmates say Dolores O'Riordan's death was ‘biggest shock'

The Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan has remembered the death of lead singer Dolores O'Riordan, calling it 'the biggest shock of my life'. Hogan said that O'Riordan's death in 2018, from accidentally drowning in a bathtub while intoxicated, came at a time when the Irish alt-rock band were finally working on new music for the first time in six years. 'The day before she passed away, she texted me about songs that we've been working on,' Hogan told the i. Drummer Fergal Lawler said he still wakes up in the mornings to expect an email or call from O'Riordan, adding: 'I don't think it's something I'll ever actually get over.' With the blessing of O'Riordan's family, the band completed their final album, In the End, in the immediate weeks after her death. Released in 2019, it contained O'Riordan's final vocal recordings and demos she had worked on with the band. Lawler remembered how O'Riordan would arrive at recording sessions in the evenings to lay down the vocals, but when they were finishing In the End without her, coping with her absence was difficult. 'When we finished up at the end of the day, we were looking down the hall, almost expecting her to walk in,' said Lawler. Hogan added that the final day of recording the album was difficult because they realised it would be the 'last time we'd all be in the studio together as The Cranberries'. The Cranberries rose to fame in the Nineties, with hits including 1994's 'Zombie', 1993's 'Dreams' and 'Linger'. O'Riordan joined The Cranberries – then called The Cranberry Saw Us – when she was a teenager, after spotting an advert for a female singer in a rock band. The band included O'Riordan, Lawler, Hogan and his brother, bassist Mike Hogan. At the height of The Cranberries' fame, O'Riordan would later say she was 'really sick and screwed up... I felt like a puppet, an object', and appeared to struggle around the release of the band's 1996 record To the Faithful Departed. Reflecting on O'Riordan's legacy, Hogan remembered her carefree spirit and unmistakable talent. 'I mean, she was born with that voice, right? And she genuinely didn't care what people thought. That filter wasn't there. We'd all love to be that carefree,' Hogan said. 'All the other stuff that happened through all the years, it fades into the background. It's the songs people will remember Dolores for.'
