Suriya turns 50: Do you know the actor's first salary?

The Hindu3 days ago
Suriya might today be one of the most popular Tamil actors around, earning crores of rupees. But did you know that his first salary was a mere ₹736?
That money was earned due to his work in a garment factory, where he toiled long before he plunged into acting. The hours were long; it involved him working more than 18 hours a day.

He recalled this phase of his life in an interview with The Hindu before the release of 2020's Soorarai Pottru. 'We all go through this phase once we turn 18, when we start thinking about our future. I did not want to follow my father's [actor Sivakumar] footsteps in the film industry. I got a job in a garment factory, with my first month's salary being ₹736, which I got after 18 hours of work every day. I still remember the weight of the white envelope that had that money,' he nostalgically stated.
Today, Suriya is well known among admirers for his hard work and sincerity, two qualities that have appealed to many of his fans. Even as he awaits the release of upcoming film Karuppu, directed by Balaji, Suriya's penchant to learn and master things that he did not know has made him one of the biggest stars of Tamil cinema.

This is evident not just now, but also way back in 2003, when, in a conversation with his father, actor Sivakumar, to The Hindu, he remarked, 'Before coming into the field, I did not realise how hard you would have toiled to make it big. Only now do I know what it is like to act in public places. I am also learning how to react to public comments and how to overcome difficulties.'

London Cinema Halts Pawan Kalyan's Film Screening After Fans Cause Chaos

Last Updated: The disruption occurred during a screening of the Telugu film Hari Hara Veera Mallu. A cinema hall in London was forced to halt a film screening midway on July 24 due to disruptive behaviour from audience members. The incident was caught on camera and the footage has since gone viral on social media. In the video, shared on X, two staff members from the theatre can be seen confronting a group of patrons after they were reportedly causing a disturbance. According to the video circulating online, the disruption occurred during a screening of the Telugu film Hari Hara Veera Mallu, starring Pawan Kalyan, at a Cineworld cinema. The film was paused after some individuals in the audience were seen creating a mess during the show. The movie officially premiered on Thursday, July 24, with paid previews available a day earlier. One user on social media alleged that fans of the Telugu star were throwing confetti and causing a general disturbance. 'The staff rightly stopped the film and called them out. This kind of hooliganism is unacceptable and deserves strong condemnation," the caption read. The video also showed members of the audience engaging in a verbal exchange with the cinema staff. Some argued that there were no official notices or posters stating that such behaviour was prohibited. One attendee even raised a complaint about the sound system. — Meru (@MeruBhaiya) July 24, 2025 Following the viral video, several social media users voiced their disappointment over the incident, supporting the cinema staff's actions in confronting those responsible. A number of commenters criticised the behaviour of the audience, with some calling for better civic awareness among certain cinemagoers. 'Sad but Indian really need some decorum classes for living in the UK.. just pathetic behaviour all over," one user commented. Another wrote, 'At least they could have said sorry…. That would have been more graceful than trying to argue it out." This is not the first time such an event has disrupted a screening in London. In April 2024, a showing of Tamil actor Vijay's film Ghilli was also paused due to chaos in the theatre. The film, which had been re-released after 20 years, faced a similar disruption when the audience became unruly. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
