Mom Shares ‘Non-Negotiable' Rule to Prevent Her Kids From Bickering on Playdates

Yahoo10 hours ago
A mom of four has a definitive rule to make sure her children stay 'forever friends': No fighting with your siblings on playdates.
'However you treat your sibling, is how you open the door for other people, including friends, to treat them,' Hannah Driscoll tells TODAY.com.
Driscoll, whose children are 8, 7, 2 and 1, explained on TikTok:
'I don't let my kids play with friends if they're not getting along,' Driscoll said in her video. 'My big kids just had a bunch of neighborhood kids in our backyard, and they were all playing and my son started being mean to my daughter.'
Driscoll said her 8-year-old son kept pushing his 7-year-old sister, down a slide while she yelled, 'Stop!'
'I called both of them in and asked what was wrong, and they talked to me about it,' Driscoll said in the clip. 'I said, 'OK, we're done playing with friends.' I told my son to go tell the other kids that they had to go home.'
In Driscoll's video, she said her son took personal responsibility for the canceled playdate because, 'It's not my fault they have to go home.'
Driscoll said her son told his friends: 'Hey, you guys have to go home because I'm not getting along with my sister.'
She added, 'If they want to play with friends, they have to be getting along with their siblings.'
It's not that I expect them to get along 100% of the time — it's that I expect that if they're going to be playing with friends, they treat each other well.'
Driscoll said that after the canceled playdate, all was forgotten.
'Do you know what all my kids are doing right now?' Driscoll said in the video. 'They're all in the same room playing together and having fun. Because they know that those are their forever friends.'
Moms with more than one child, agreed.
'We call it, 'The Same Team Rule.' Siblings are on the same team, always, and I'm the coach. If you're not playing like a team, the game is over.'
'I tell mine, 'If you treat your brother/sister bad, your friends are going to think that they can also treat your brother/sister bad.'
'YES! I always told my kids, 'If you can't get along with each other, you can't get along with your friends.' This made such a difference in how my children treated each other.'
'We don't tolerate meanness. Good on you for setting this standard with your kids.'
'My rule has always been, 'Everyone plays or no one plays. They have grown to respect this rule, whether they like it or not.'
'Also ... my kids will not allow other kids to mistreat one of their sisters.'
Driscoll tells TODAY.com that her eldest are 17 months apart and share neighborhood friends, who are between the ages of 6 and 9.
'My kids fight sometimes, but they typically get along and have always had a close relationship,' she says.
'Learning how to resolve conflict with a sibling will help you do it at school or in the workplace,' says Driscoll, adding that she doesn't want other kids to mistreat her children based on what they see between her children.
Driscoll knows from experience since she grew up with a similar rule.
'When my brother and I would fight, my mom wouldn't separate us — she would make us sit on the couch and hold hands,' says Driscoll. 'As a kid, I was annoyed by this but my brother and I ... are super close now. I appreciate it.'
When her children's playdate ended early, Driscoll says her children begged for a second chance, but she insisted.
After the neighborhood children left, says Driscoll, her kids continued playing with each other, explaining to TODAY.com, 'They didn't miss a beat.'
'Removing a privilege like a playdate when siblings are not getting along is grounded in basic behavioral principles,' Francyne Zeltser, clinical director of mental health and testing services at Manhattan Psychology Group, tells TODAY.com in an email.
'From a clinical perspective, playdates are privileges, not rights,' says Zeltser. 'If the family rule is that playdates are contingent on sibling cooperation, then it's logical that conflict between siblings may result in that privilege being revoked.'
Zeltser says 'prioritizing family relationships' is the message.
'Reinforcing the value of getting along with siblings before engaging with peers can help children learn to maintain harmony in their closest relationships,' she explains. 'As children grow older, peers often become more influential than parents or siblings. By establishing early on that family comes first, parents can instill a sense of loyalty, mutual respect and advocacy within the family unit. This can serve as a protective factor during adolescence, when peer influence becomes stronger and not always positive.'
Zeltser notes the potential downside of canceling a playdate, especially if it happens a lot and kids continue to argue.
'It could result in fewer invitations from peers who don't want to risk their time being cut short,' says Zeltser. 'In that case, it's worth reassessing the approach and possibly incorporating other strategies, like coaching the children on conflict-resolution skills or using positive reinforcement for cooperative behavior.'

Breaking Down the 'Ironheart' Season Finale's Big Marvel Reveal and Post-Credits Scene

After two weeks on Disney Plus, Ironheart aired its season finale during a three-episode drop on Tuesday night. Though the show didn't serve as a vehicle for Riri Williams' introduction into the Marvel universe, it's brought in new and not-so-new characters that we recognize from the comic books and greater MCU -- even if some of them were only present in spirit. The penultimate episode saw Riri, Ezekiel/Joe and Parker confront their daddy issues in their own ways, with the latter putting a gun to his father's head and seizing his home and company. Though he has Ezekiel under his thumb, he still doesn't know Riri is alive. She got busy working with her family and Zelma Stanton to forge new armor made from parts of her stepfather's car. Sadly for her, by the end, she lost her bestie and AI assistant Natalie when magic was uploaded to her suit. That's a double heartbreak over Natalie's loss. Magic has a price, doesn't it? It's something we've seen with Doctor Strange, Agatha Harkness and Scarlet Witch. Still, Riri put a plan in motion to take on The Hood in the lead-up to the finale. She wants the cloak for her own reasons. I'm going to break down what happened in the finale episode, that being who showed up at the end and what it could all mean for the MCU. If you haven't watched the series or these last three episodes, do not read any further. Spoilers ahead. Getty Image/Zooey Liao/CNET Parker's path to The Hood and his undoing Opening this episode with Parker's path to demonic deal-making helped viewers realize how he wound up with the hood and the markings on his body. In the past, Sacha Baron Cohen's Lucifer-like character ("What is your greatest desire?") appeared with nefarious intentions, including his insidious act of eating pizza with a fork and knife. This isn't aligned with how they meet in the Marvel comics, but we know Parker basically sells access to his soul in exchange for money and power. Anthony Ramos as The Hood (Parker Robbins) in Ironheart. Marvel When Riri shows up at the pizza spot to fight The Hood, she has to get through Joe first, who's magically programmed like a puppet to protect Parker at all costs. She figures out a crafty way to override his tech and shut him down. After this and the careless move Riri made that got Joe locked up, they're not exactly friends but not raging enemies, either. "Joe's gone. I have millions of dollars' worth of weapons inside me, and no idea where to put this anger." He tells her to handle Parker and lets her know that the two of them aren't done. What does that mean? Parker/Hood isn't too surprised when a fully alive Riri confronts him in his loft, but he's thrown off by her use of magic. They battle, his demon-esque side pops out, and she activates her "emergency protocol" to prevent him from destroying them both. It looks like Riri's blown up her suit -- and The Hood -- as she crawls through pieces of scrap. Parker is fine, aims a gun at a teary-eyed Riri with the intention of shooting her "for John." But it's all a hologram! She appears behind him, snatches the cloak off him and leaves him writhing on the floor in agony. "Don't you see what it's doing to you?" Now, this feels a little hypocritical because she wants the hood for her own designs, but nevertheless, she leaves Parker begging for it back and walks out. With great pizza, comes the great Mephisto Following her tussle with Parker, Riri takes the elevator downstairs to Desperito's Pizza. That cunning fork-and-knife pizza-eating demon is waiting at the table. He snaps Riri out of her suit and makes it vanish while imploring her to sit with him. She realizes he's the source of Parker's hood, and he starts his sales pitch about helping her achieve her dreams. "I've been watching you. Rooting for you. Wanting to meet you for some time now because I love the exceptional, the driven, the dogged -- someone inquisitive and curious." Homing in on her underdog complex, he offers to help and lays it on thick by adding that he's aided all 100 people on Forbes' richest list. Then he hits her with a combo of telepathy and saying Riri's own words aloud of "building something iconic." Her response? It was basically, "Yeah, OK, Dormammu." Marvel A guttural laugh signals that's not who this is, and he tells her she can call him Mephisto. Yeah, it's the Mephisto so many of you have been waiting for since WandaVision, Multiverse of Madness and Agatha All Along. He's here, and he's insulted that anyone would think Dormammu is powering the cloak. How rude of us. Ultimately, he asks her what she wants, then reads her mind as she recalls her memories with Natalie -- the real one and the AI version. He pushes her to accept his help, and assures her "the catch" is something "she won't miss." The camera cuts, ending their interaction before we see her answer. A new scene shows a table covered with magical supplies and candles, and Riri analyzing sorcerous seals and mathematical formulas. A voice calls her name, she looks up, and it's Natalie. Riri says, "It worked?!" and rambles about her advanced AI creation. But this is flesh-and-bone Natalie, brought back from the dead, and they're both shocked and confused. In a flashback, Riri did indeed shake hands with Mephisto, and that's confirmed when we see black lines crawl up her arm as she hugs Natalie. Ironheart's mid-credits scene A short time after the credits roll, Parker appears and walks into Stanton's shop. His head is covered, but there are traces of blackened lines on his face -- so his demonic connection is clearly not broken. It's his and Zelma's first meeting, but he wastes no time asking for magical help. Doubtful that she's capable of more than tricks, he implies he wants to see "what's in the back." Zelma stares him down as he says, "I know you don't know me, at least not yet. But if you're up for it, how about a little abracadabra?" She shrugs, and the scene cuts. What does all this mean for the MCU? Oh, Mephisto's presence can go in multiple directions, but remember this series marks the end of Phase 5. Phase 6 is still in the Multiverse Saga, so as far as realities and timelines go, there's room for resurrections, shape-shifting, dimension hopping, reality bending and more drama in the cosmos. Mephisto's comic book entanglements have him involved with Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, Loki, Victor Von Doom (aka Doctor Doom) and a host of other heroes and villains (yeah, Moon Knight and Scarlet Witch, too). It wouldn't be completely impossible to see Mephisto making deals with Peter Parker or anyone else in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and definitely don't be surprised if Marvel drops him into Avengers: Doomsday. This demon's comic storylines with the Avengers, Doc Doom, and even the Maximoff twins could be reworked for the big screen as well as upcoming TV shows like Wonder Man or Vision Quest. Nothing is confirmed, but it's time to get your fan theories popping.

Buffy Reboot: Charisma Carpenter Hopeful for ‘Poetic' Return After Character's ‘Unjust' End in Spinoff

Despite Cordelia Chase's unfortunate demise in the Buffy spinoff Angel, Charisma Carpenter is game to revive the character in the upcoming Buffy reboot. In June, Sarah Michelle Gellar said her 'dream is to bring back everyone who has died' in Hulu's forthcoming Buffy series. Speaking with IGN, Carpenter threw Cordy's hat into the ring, saying that her return to the series would be 'poetic' after the character's 'unjust' end in Angel's final season. 'To see this actually happen for the fans makes me thrilled. I am so hopeful to be included, for Cordelia to be a part of this new iteration.' Carpenter was a series regular on Buffy through Season 3. She then crossed over to Angel, but after several seasons, she was written out, only to be killed in a one-off guest-spot in Season 5. 'I don't know really what to make of it,' Carpenter told the publication, in reference to her character now being eligible for a comeback. 'I'm sure there are caveats — Cordelia died on Angel, not on Buffy,' she said. 'I don't know what that means for Cordelia specifically, but I'm hopeful that it includes Cordelia, obviously. It would be a dream to be included, and it would just be so poetic for that to occur, and for it to occur with this group. 'These writers are wildly creative, I'm sure they could figure it out if they wanted to, if it was a fan thing, where if there was a thirst or craving or need for Cordelia to be there. I'm sure with one hell of a creative team they have leading the writers' room, it would be possible.' Buffy's 20 Best Episodes, Ranked! View List Carpenter added: '[Cordelia] was built up so big, she'd grown so much, she'd had this remarkable journey, and for her to go out the way that she did just felt so unjust.' The actress previously returned to the franchise in an Audible spinoff series titled Slayers that starred Carpenter as an alternate universe version of her character, one in which Cordelia was a vampire slayer. That audio-only series reunited the actress with other Buffy alums including Emma Caulfield Ford (Anya), Amber Benson (Tara), Anthony Head (Giles), James Marsters (Spike) and Juliet Landau (Drusilla), but it was cancelled after just one season. Ahead of Slayers' release, Carpenter spoke to TVLine about the injustices Cordelia had faced and how her fate was not at all what the actress had wanted. 'The way that things ended for her was absolutely not what I wanted for that character that I had played, and all the blood, sweat and tears that went into her,' she said. 'And also the life that I personally was living and sacrificing for. To bring this character to life and to have it go the way that it did was like a part of me died. And so to be able to bring this about in this way was the ultimate justice for Cordelia.' The Buffy follow-up was officially announced back in February with Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face) attached as writers, showrunners and executive producers. Zhao is attached to direct and executive-produce, with additional EPs including Gellar, Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui and Dolly Parton. (Berman, the Kuzuis and Parton all executive-produced the original series.) Gellar will reprise her former role in a recurring capacity rather than a leading one. In May, Ryan Kiera Armstrong was announced as the series' new slayer. For more of Carpenter's thoughts on both Buffy and Angel, fans can check out her new Patreon podcast, The Bitch Is Back. Bird lovers flock to adopt parrot who is ‘rated R, parental advisory required'

Animal shelter employees were enjoying a rare quiet moment in the lobby when a yell came from a room designated for small animals: 'Shut the f--- up.' Four employees looked at one another in confusion. Then the shriek came again. The culprit? Hendrix, a blue-and-gold macaw who came to the shelter the prior month, surrendered by his longtime owner. The cursing only became louder after that late-May afternoon. Chantelle Rogers, administrative assistant at the Forever Paws Animal Shelter in Fall River, Massachusetts, was tasked with writing a blurb to help Hendrix get adopted. She opted for honesty. 'If you adopt Hendrix, you're basically adopting Samuel L. Jackson,' Rogers wrote on Facebook, referring to the actor who is known, in part, for his delivery of profanity-laced dialogue in movies. 'This bird's language is not for the faint of heart.' Her post only made people more interested. Thousands of people shared the post, which got traction for its candor and its humor. The next day, the shelter received a windfall of about 60 adoption applications, prompting employees to close applications that day. One person was soon selected, and Hendrix's new owner took the parrot home June 21 after hearing the bird curse a few times. 'It's so quiet without him,' Rogers told The Washington Post. 'We do definitely miss him, but we know he's where he's supposed to be.' Hendrix first arrived at the shelter in April. He was surrendered to Fall River Animal Control by his prior owner of two decades, said Cynthia Berard-Cadima, the department's supervisor. Blue-and-gold macaws can live for more than 70 years, according to the Australia Zoo, and Rogers said Hendrix is about 30 years old. Rogers said the first person who popped into her mind when she saw the colorful macaw was the late singer and guitarist Jimi Hendrix. But many of Hendrix's feathers were missing on his roughly 3-foot-tall body and 40-inch-wide wingspan, Rogers said, probably due to malnutrition. The shelter mainly houses cats and dogs, so Hendrix was the only parrot in a room with a few rabbits and a guinea pig. Hendrix was initially scared of people, shaking when an employee approached his cage. The shelter bought Hendrix an extra-large Chewy pineapple toy that employees hung in the parrot's cage and discovered the bird's favorite treats: strawberries, blueberries, dried bananas and peanuts. A few weeks after arriving, Hendrix began opening up, saying 'cracker' when the parrot wanted a dried banana chip and 'thank you' when he received one. Hendrix once told Rogers: 'Good morning, baby.' Hendrix chirped when he wanted attention and tried to mimic barking noises he heard from the shelter's dogs. Near the end of May, employees heard Hendrix curse for the first time. After that, Hendrix used more vulgar language — and said it louder. A new employee was cleaning Hendrix's cage near the beginning of June when the parrot cursed at him. Employees told customers that if they hear profanities, it's coming from a parrot who wants attention, not a person. Hendrix might've learned the vulgar words by hearing them in his previous home, Rogers said, but his foul language probably meant he was becoming more comfortable at the shelter. Hoping to discourage Hendrix's language, employees turned around or left the room to laugh after Hendrix cursed. 'How do you not laugh at that? Like, the bird just cussed you out,' Rogers, 32, said with a laugh. 'So, like, you have to react at some point.' While his language remained salty, Hendrix grew new feathers by eating soft-pellet bird food. By mid-June, Rogers said, Hendrix was ready to be adopted. 'One day he will call you baby and the next day he's calling you MFer I guess is the politest way to type it out,' Rogers wrote on Facebook on June 11. 'He says thank you when you give him snacks but will also tell you to shut up.' 'This bird is rated R, parental advisory required, a real sour patch kid if one side was sugar and the other side was arsenic,' Rogers added. Rogers wrote near the end of the post that they sought an owner for Hendrix who has a cage and experience owning large birds. She added that the owner can't live in an apartment or have children 'because he is loud and explicit.' When one commenter asked whether the shelter can be more specific about the profanity Hendrix uses, Rogers replied: 'Facebook will ban me if I repeat them.' When Rogers went to work the following day, the shelter had received about 30 adoption applications from across the United States and Canada, and more would come in throughout the day. On June 12, nearly 28 hours after posting the advertisement, the shelter added to the top of its post 'APPLICATIONS NOW CLOSED!' 'And just like that, I learned way more about most people than I wanted to,' Rogers wrote on Facebook a few days later. Shelter employees narrowed the applicants to the five most qualified and invited them to meet Hendrix. One woman who already had a room and toys in her house for birds she previously owned was the perfect fit, Rogers said. When the owner took Hendrix home, Hendrix cursed a few times when employees moved his cage. After he left, the shelter became quieter; vulgar language no longer overlapped with dogs barking. Rogers said the owner emailed her a few days later, saying that Hendrix is beginning to feel comfortable. He might be ready to let a new torrent of obscenities fly.
