Michael Maguire hit with Reece Walsh dilemma after season-ending injury blow
The fullback was training the house down and showed he was ready to replace any star who suffered an injury in the backline with Perham also proving to be a capable replacement for Reece Walsh. However, reports suggest Perham suffered an ACL injury when running up for a hit-up on the weekend.
Footage shows Perham stepping back onto his left, but buckling as he braced for impact. Perham left the field limping with seven minutes left in the first-half.
Unfortunately, reports suggest Perham will miss the entire 2025 NRL season. NRL Physio, Brien Seeney, claimed it appeared to be a textbook non-contact knee injury and recovery time would be around nine months. This would rule the 25-year-old out for his first season at the Broncos after a career switch.
Perham made the move from the Bulldogs to join the Broncos under Maguire with the hope he would get some NRL action. While Selwyn Cobbo could have replaced Walsh at fullback, Perham was selected in the trial game against the Titans and was looking to be a solid deputy across the entire backline in 2025.
Perham was part of the Broncos outfit that looked fit and sharp as they hammered the Titans 50-12 with a number of players putting their hands up for selection. One such player was Corey Paix who is making a real case to be the starting No.9 in round one for Maguire's Broncos outfit.

Bad news for the Broncos with reports emerging new recruit Hayze Perham suffered a ruptured ACL yesterday.Brisbane had hoped he would provide depth in an outside back corps ravaged by injury in 2024 and his loss is a sizeable blow.

Paix has been one of the stars of the Broncos pre-season so far having potentially leapfrogged Billy Walters in the starting side. Under former coach Kevin Walters, Billy played No.9 for the 2024 season with Paix overlooked.
However, Paix continues to push his case to take the starting jersey off Walters and didn't do his chances any harm on the weekend. Paix scored two tries as he showcased his speed from dummy-half in an exciting audition. Paix said he followed Maguire's instructions prior to the game and is ready to take that starting position if given the opportunity.
"I went out and did my job. Madge (Maguire) gave me clear instructions to go out and front-load. I felt really good and I felt comfortable," Paix said. "I always thought I had to go back (to Queensland Cup in 2024) and work really hard. I did that at Wynnum. To train well in pre-season and play well today was pleasing. It is a clean slate here. I knew if I went and worked hard I would give myself a chance to be there round one."
Another potential player who looked promising in the Broncos' first hit-out was Kobe Hetherington. Former coach Walters wasn't overly keen on Hetherington with the forward told he could potentially look for a new club.
However, Maguire reversed the decision and told Hetherington he had an opportunity to show him he could be a starter. And Hetherington pushed his case to start at lock for the 2025 season, which would see Patrick Carrigan move into the front row. Towering Broncos prop Ben Te Kura is also firming for a potential bench position for the Broncos' opening game of the season.

Arizona Cardinals preseason game 2 offensive snap counts, observations
Howard Balzer has a look at the playing time on offense for the Cardinals against the Broncos In the Arizona Cardinals' 27-7 loss to the Denver Broncos, 25 players participated in at least one of the 49 offensive snaps. How was that playing time divided? Let's have a look. Below are the snap counts for every player who got in the game on offense, grouped by position. The first number after each name is snaps, and the second is the percentage. Players in bold were starters. Arizona Cardinals preseason week 2 snap counts, observations Quarterbacks After a five-play possession to start the game, Brissett then led the Cardinals to their only score on an 11-play, 67-yard drive that ended with a 16-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Simi Fehoko. He had a 17-yard completion to wide receiver Xavier Weaver on third-and-7 and then continued the drive with a 2-yard run on fourth-and-1 from the Broncos 23-yard line. He was 5-for-5 for 49 yards in the possession and didn't play again. Tune completed 13 of 20 passes for a mere 56 yards (2.8 yards per attempt, 4.3 per completion). There were two 10-yard plays to running backs Michael Carter and DeeJay Dallas and the other 11 completions were seven yards or fewer, totaling 36 yards. Running backs were 6-for-29 (Carter 4-18, Dallas 1-10, Bam Knight 1-1); tight ends 4-for-12 (Josiah Deguara 2-9, Travis Vokolek (2-3); and wide receivers 3-for-15 (Tejhaun Palmer 1-6, Fehoko 1-5, Bryson Green 1-4). Running backs Carter had a 5-yard run, but seven other carries totaled only five yards. He added 19 yards on five receptions. Demercado played as much as he did because of his ability as a pass protector. The running backs totaled 29 yards on 15 attempts. Wide receivers Weaver had the key 17-yard first down, but also had an early drop. One deep ball from Tune should have drawn a pass interference flag. Fehoko had two catches for 21 yards and the touchdown. Tight ends Higgins wasn't targeted, while Deguara (2-for-9) and Vokolek (3-6) combined for 15 yards on five catches. Offensive linemen Conner suffered a knee injury on the third play of the game when he was ticketed to have a lot of snaps at center. The severity is unknown. Haynesworth replaced him and not Gaines because the latter was unable to snap because of a thumb injury. The top six linemen did not play. Maguire could be forced to drop Broncos and Origin ace after concerning scenes
Broncos great Corey Parker has suggested Michael Maguire could look at giving Patrick Carrigan a rest leading up to the NRL finals after claims his form has dipped. Maguire took over the Broncos at the start of the season and made the bold call to move Carrigan to prop with Kobe Hetherington switching to starting lock. Although the switch did not work with Carrigan and Payne Haas shouldering too much of the grunt work in the forward pack. The Broncos lost five in a row towards the middle of the season and Maguire opted to switch Carrigan back to lock in round 14. The move initially helped the Broncos and Carrigan was selected at lock for Queensland in State of Origin Game 1. But Billy Slater opted to make a change for Game 2 and dropped Carrigan to the bench in a shock move. The selection worked with Carrigan introduced when fatigue started to kick-in. Carrigan only played 33 minutes in Game 2 for Queensland, which saw Melbourne Storm star Trent Loriero play the majority of the game. And Slater may have been on to something at the time. The rigours of NRL footy could be taking its toll on Carrigan who was not at his industrial best against the Dolphins in his side's vital 38-28 win on the weekend. While Reece Walsh stole the show, Carrigan played 61 minutes and made 35 tackles. But he also only contributed 98 metres, which was significantly down from his season's average. He also conceded a penalty and a ruck infringement. While Carrigan's ball playing is valued at lock, the 27-year-old hasn't scored in 2025. A NRL fan called SEN Radio and claimed Carrigan was not playing his best footy in recent weeks. Parker defended Carrigan, but claimed the Queensland forward might need a rest to freshen up those legs if he is going to rediscover his best form. "To be fair, and in Pat Carrigan's defence, he has been up for a long period of time. Maybe he needs a rest. Origin and the not your typical, what we have seen from Pat over recent years," Parker said on SEN Radio. "His standard is very high. But I think if we can get a little bit of rest into Pat and move him onto the semi-final, it should work in our favour." While Carrigan's dip could be down to fatigue, Slater's decision to revert the Broncos forward to the bench in a unfamiliar role might raise some eyebrows heading into the finals. And Maguire would be aware of his team's intensity heading into the final three games of the season. Pat Carrigan's regression this season should probably be talked about more — Rhys 🇦🇺❗️ (@SulloReport) August 16, 2025 Michael Maguire's issue with resting Patrick Carrigan Unfortunately for Maguire, resting Carrigan might not be easy with three games left. The Broncos are sixth on 30 points, but are only four points off the Dolphins in ninth. Two losses and the Broncos are facing a battle to remain in the top eight. The Broncos play a crucial clash against the Storm in round 27. Instead, Maguire might be forced to manage Carrigan's minutes going forward if his team build a lead. The Broncos already carry a brutal injury toll with Adam Reynolds, Ezra Mam and Selwyn Cobbo all going down injured against the Storm two weeks ago. RELATED: Family first as Cameron Smith makes major career decision Fans' telling response after Channel 9's divisive post-game move Although Carrigan claimed a rest after the Origin period did help him feel refreshed. Speaking after Queensland won the series, Carrigan said a few days off helped him reset for NRL footy. "Having won this series, you're always a little bit fresher," he said at the time. "I've just learned over the past couple of years that it's an opportunity to let yourself refresh. I was a bit guilty (in 2024) of just trying to double down and dive back into things. "Madge (Maguire) gave us five or six days off, and that was really good to bring me back level-headed and back to my focus here. I feel really good." And maybe Maguire will look to hand Carrigan less game time to manage the body and feel fresh again.

Broncos' 2024 draft pick looks like a sure cut ahead of final preseason game
Broncos' 2024 draft pick looks like a sure cut ahead of final preseason game originally appeared on The Sporting News Before training camp started for the Denver Broncos, almost everyone would have had running back Audric Estime as a sure bet to make this year's team. But with six running backs on the current roster, he has likely fallen to the last spot on the depth chart. The Broncos used their second-round pick on RJ Harvey before signing J.K. Dobbins in free agency. That pushed Estime down the depth chart, but he hasn't performed well this summer and has seemingly fallen behind the other three running backs — Jaleel McLaughlin, Tyler Badie and Blake Watson. It now looks like close to a sure thing that he will be left off the 53-man roster. and some of that could be due to a poor work ethic and attitude. Consider what former Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay had to say on his show, "The Drive" on Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan. Estime was a fifth-round pick by the Broncos in 2024 and is still just 21 years old. It seems like he has some strides to make as a professional and is not ready to be part of a team coached by Sean Payton. He will get one more preseason game to show that he should still have a chance to stick around, but it's hard to see the Broncos cutting any of the other running backs in favor of him based on what he have seen this preseason.
