Taxi association slams police after passengers shot in KZN
The North Coast Courier reports that, according to initial accounts, members of the Police Emergency Services task team identified a taxi matching the description of a hijacked vehicle and attempted to intercept it.
Police spokesperson Captain Ntathu Ndlovu confirmed that Umhlali police are investigating two counts of attempted murder.
'Police received information that a stolen vehicle was spotted on the N2, resulting in a high-speed chase. After various unsuccessful attempts to stop the vehicle and observing its blatant disregard for road safety, officers opened fire to bring it to a halt,' said Ndlovu.
No arrests have been made, and no fatalities were reported.
Among the injured were a 39-year-old man, critically wounded after being shot in the chest, and a 26-year-old woman who was shot in the leg.
The owner of the taxi, who asked to be identified only as Mr Ndlovu, said the driver noticed a vehicle following him after dropping off a passenger in Shaka's Head.
As he approached the Umhlali traffic lights, shots were fired.
'That's when he stopped. But I'm told the police continued firing even after the taxi had halted. The vehicle had number plates, passengers and association stickers. They could have just pulled it over,' said Mr Ndlovu.
Richard David, the spokesperson for the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association, condemned the shooting.
'There was no need to open fire. Taxi drivers are stopped regularly. This was reckless and now innocent people are injured. It could have been avoided,' he said.

Third burned female body found in east, police investigate
Police in Silverton have launched a murder investigation, following the discovery of three burned female bodies found between June and July along the railway line between Waltloo and Denneboom train stations. According to provincial police spokesperson, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, the bodies were found at the same location on separate dates over the past month. 'The details surrounding the incidents remain unclear, and investigations are ongoing,' she said. She added that in all three cases, members of the public alerted police after coming across the bodies. It is reported that the murders share a similar modus operandi, but the motive behind the killings remains unknown at this stage. JMPD steps up patrols against illegal street racing
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmed an increase in reports of alleged illegal street racing in parts of the city, particularly Rosebank, Fourways, and Midrand. This comes in the wake of a tragic accident on Jan Smuts Avenue on July 12, in which an Uber driver lost his life. JMPD Superintendent Xolani Fihla, said JMPD attended the scene, and a case of culpable homicide has been opened, with the South African Police Service (SAPS) currently investigating. 'These incidents highlight the severe dangers posed by illegal street racing.' The department acknowledged growing concerns raised by community members, as well as by Michael Sun, DA Gauteng spokesperson for community safety, who recently called for visible enforcement and greater accountability. 'While we strive for a constant presence, illegal street racing often occurs spontaneously and across various locations, making real-time enforcement challenging. However, we are enhancing our information gathering and tactical responses to deal with these incidents more effectively.' Fihla said that collecting specific statistics on street racing-related arrests, injuries, and fatalities is complicated, as such cases are frequently recorded under broader traffic offences, such as reckless and negligent driving, excessive speeding, or driving under the influence. Despite these challenges, Fihla reaffirmed JMPD's commitment to road safety. He said the department is ramping up patrols and working closely with other law enforcement agencies to hold offenders accountable under the National Road Traffic Act. 'We urge residents to continue reporting any suspicious activity. Public co-operation is vital in helping us keep Johannesburg's roads safe for us all.' Elderly couple killed, 6 others injured in KZN house fire
Two people were killed and six others were injured in a house fire on Midmar Road in Shallcross, south-west of Durban. According to Garrith Jamieson, director of ALS Paramedics Medical Services, they arrived at the scene this morning at about 06:30 to find the eThekweni Fire Department already fighting the blaze. 'Paramedics stood by and assessed six people who had managed to escape from the residence and had sustained minor injuries. 'Paramedics were called to enter the house once the fire had been extinguished by the fire department, and unfortunately, [came across] the gruesome discovery of a couple believed to be in their late 60s that had suffered fatal injury as a result of the fire,' said Jamieson. The couple was declared dead at the scene. 'At this stage, the cause of the fire is unknown; however, SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.' This incident comes after an electrical fire set two Durban flats ablaze yesterday morning. The fire that started in the apartments adjoining the Grey Street Mosque in central Durban was successfully put out by the eThekwini Municipality's fire department on Monday. The fire, allegedly sparked by electrics, was first reported to the fire department at 10:00. Two flats adjoining the mosque caught alight in Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street, Durban Central. According to the Grey Street Mosque's chairperson, Av Mohammed, it took the fire department 20 minutes to put the fire out. There were no injuries reported.
