The Citizen6 days ago
Two people were killed and six others were injured in a house fire on Midmar Road in Shallcross, south-west of Durban.
According to Garrith Jamieson, director of ALS Paramedics Medical Services, they arrived at the scene this morning at about 06:30 to find the eThekweni Fire Department already fighting the blaze.
'Paramedics stood by and assessed six people who had managed to escape from the residence and had sustained minor injuries.
'Paramedics were called to enter the house once the fire had been extinguished by the fire department, and unfortunately, [came across] the gruesome discovery of a couple believed to be in their late 60s that had suffered fatal injury as a result of the fire,' said Jamieson.
The couple was declared dead at the scene.
'At this stage, the cause of the fire is unknown; however, SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.'
This incident comes after an electrical fire set two Durban flats ablaze yesterday morning.
The fire that started in the apartments adjoining the Grey Street Mosque in central Durban was successfully put out by the eThekwini Municipality's fire department on Monday.
The fire, allegedly sparked by electrics, was first reported to the fire department at 10:00. Two flats adjoining the mosque caught alight in Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street, Durban Central.
According to the Grey Street Mosque's chairperson, Av Mohammed, it took the fire department 20 minutes to put the fire out. There were no injuries reported.

Elderly couple assaulted, tied up on Free State farm: Suspects caught on same day as robbery

Elderly couple assaulted, tied up on Free State farm: Suspects caught on same day as robbery Two men were arrested shortly after an elderly couple were attacked, tied up and robbed on their Smithfield farm, in the Free State, yesterday. Bloemfontein Courant reports that the couple, aged 78 and 81, returned to their farm at around 13:30 when they were confronted by two suspects. According to Free State police spokesperson Captain Loraine Earle, the wife entered the house while her husband remained outside. 'While approaching the kitchen door, she was overpowered by two unknown suspects,' says Earle. 'They assaulted her, threatened her with knives, and forced her back to where her husband was still approaching the house. The suspects then forced both victims into the house and tied them up with cable ties.' The house was ransacked, phones, cash and jewellery stolen, and the husband was forced to transfer money. 'The suspects then pushed the husband into his own vehicle and drove off with him,' adds Earle. 'They later abandoned him in the driveway of the farm before fleeing the scene in the stolen vehicle.' The couple contacted neighbouring farmers and police. Two suspects, aged 29 and 36, were arrested on their way to Bethulie shortly afterwards. Police recovered the stolen cash and vehicle. Free State police commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane has assigned the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit to lead the investigation. Forensic experts have processed the scene. Earle confirms the suspects remain in custody and face charges of house robbery with aggravating circumstances, theft of a motor vehicle, and possession of suspected stolen property. Motswenyane commended the rapid response: 'The seamless co-operation between the community, our rural safety partners, and SAPS units ensured these suspects were taken off the streets before sunset. This is a textbook example of integrated rural safety,' she says. The investigation is ongoing. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Mpumalanga churchgoers robbed at gunpoint, shots fired inside

A group of women are left traumatised after two armed men stormed their church in Mkhuhlu near Hazyview yesterday and robbed them of cash and valuables. Mpumalanga News reports that members of the Pentecost Church were about to pray at 12:40 when the suspects, wearing balaclavas, entered the church. 'The robbers were armed and fired shots into the church ceiling. They demanded cellphones and collected wallets, handbags and vehicle keys. They also took the cash collection, amounting to R1 220, contributed by the church members,' says provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli. The suspects fled in a white Toyota Fortuner belonging to a 61-year-old congregant. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Marite Trust, near the Carlton fuel station. Mdhluli says police recovered handbags and car keys from the vehicle, but the stolen cellphones and cash were missing. Several spent cartridges were also found inside the church. No arrests had been made at the time of publication. Mdhluli urges anyone with information to contact the nearest police station, call the SAPS toll-free number on 08600 10111 or use the My SAPS app. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel.
