JMM urges SC to declare SIR unconstitutional

for taking up SIR (Special Intensive Revision) in Bihar and has termed it as an ill-advised move. Speaking to media in Dharwad JMM chief and anti-graft activist SR Hiremath urged the
Supreme Court of India
to declare SIR as unconstitutional and uphold the democratic principles enshrined in the Constitution.
He stated that SIR violates Articles 14, 19, 21, 325, and 326 of the Constitution, as it contravenes the provisions of the Representation of the People's Act, 1950, and Rule 21A of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. If SIR is not set aside by the SC, it can arbitrarily and without due process disenfranchise crores of voters (as much as 30 to 50% of the country) from electing their representatives, thereby disrupting free and fair elections and democracy in the country, which are part of basic structure of the Constitution, Hiremath said.
"This would be totally against the bold experiment of Universal Franchise pledged by our Founding Fathers, who enshrined it in Constitution will be negated. It is important to identify and expose the powers that be, who have made the ECI do this 'retrograde' and 'dangerous move' of the ECI," he added.
Dropping land acquisition
The JMM, Citizens for Democracy (CFD) and NCPNR fully support the satyagraha of the 13 villages of Channapattana Hobli (Devanahalli Taluka, Bengaluru Rural Dist) 'Bhoo Swadheena Virodhi Horata' and call upon the state govt and the chief minister, who when in the opposition, had promised that, if voted to power, they would cancel the acquisition proceedings of the KIADB to acquire 1,777 acres of fertile lands of the farmers in 13 villages.

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], July 14 (ANI): All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday ruled out joining the INDIA bloc for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, stating that 'one-sided love' won't work. Instead, Owaisi's party is exploring alternatives, including potentially forming a third front. This development comes after Owaisi's party, AIMIM, sent a proposal to join the Mahagathbandhan, led by RJD chief Lalu Yadav, but received a lukewarm response. 'One-sided love is not going to happen. The people of Bihar should understand that the accusations that were made against us were based on lies and were made because they do not want a leader of the poor and oppressed people to become their political leadership,' Owaisi while speaking to ANI. Owaisi expressed his disinterest in joining the INDIA bloc, citing past experiences and accusations against his party as reasons for his decision. AIMIM Bihar president Akhtarul Iman has suggested forming a third front, which Owaisi seems to be considering as a viable alternative. Owaisi has announced that AIMIM will contest the elections, focusing on the Seemanchal region, where the party has a strong presence. Owaisi accused the INDIA bloc of not wanting a leader of the poor and oppressed to emerge, implying that they want to maintain their dominance over the people of Bihar. 'They just want you to remain their slaves, to walk behind them with your head bowed,' Owaisi added. Positioning his party as an independent political force, Owaisi said AIMIM is prepared to contest the upcoming elections on its own terms and 'form a third front.' He said, 'We will fight our elections well. Our president, Akhtarul Iman, has said that we should try to form a third front. This was an effort from our side. Everything has come before the people of Bihar for a reason.' Earlier, while speaking to ANI in Hyderabad, Owaisi also questioned the Election Commission of India's (ECI) authority to determine citizenship and criticised the body for not making official statements, instead relying on anonymous sources. He said, 'It is unfortunate that a constitutional body is not making a statement and things are being revealed through sources. Who are these sources? Who gave the ECI the power to determine whether someone is a citizen or not? Our party was the first to say that SIR is NRC through the back door.' Supreme Court on July 10 allowed ECI to continue Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls while advising them to consider allowing Aadhaar, ration cards, and electoral photo identity cards as admissible documents to prove voter identity. The decision of SIR comes ahead of Bihar elections which are expected to be held later this year in October or November; however, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has not announced an official date. While the NDA, consisting of the BJP, JD(U), and LJP, will once again be looking to continue their stint in Bihar, the INDIA bloc, consisting of the RJD, Congress, and left parties, will be looking to unseat Nitish Kumar. In the current Bihar Assembly of 243 members, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) consists of 131 with the BJP having 80 MLAs, JD(U)-45, HAM(S)-4, with the support of 2 Independent Candidates. "ECI has been exposed," says AAP's Saurabh Bhardwaj ahead of Bihar polls
New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Delhi President Saurabh Bhardwaj on Monday alleged that the Election Commission of India (ECI) is using the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar as a tool to manipulate voter lists ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls in the state. Speaking to ANI, Bhardwaj said that the Commission has been 'exposed' in past elections in Delhi, Haryana, and Maharashtra, and accused it of engineering large-scale irregularities in the voters' lists to favour certain outcomes. 'The Election Commission has been exposed in the Haryana, Maharashtra, and Delhi elections. Before the Delhi election, we proved how to rig the elections; the names of genuine voters were deducted, and thousands of new voters were added. The way the election commission was exposed in Delhi, they knew that this exercise wouldn't work,' he told ANI. Bhardwaj further added, 'They are devising methods to manipulate the voter list. This is not a way to conduct elections. This means you are going to decide who will cast the vote and who will win.' Reacting to the same, Independent MP from Purnea, Pappu Yadav, criticised the Election Commission of India, calling it 'Dhritrashtra' over their decision to revise electoral rolls in Bihar, and accused them of 'not respecting' the Constitution or following Supreme Court advice. Speaking with ANI, Pappu Yadav said, 'The Election Commission has already become 'Dhritarashtra'. They are neither following the Supreme Court's advice nor respecting the Constitution. The Supreme Court advised them and clearly stated that under no circumstances can you decide who is Indian and who is not. Work under the Constitution and include Aadhaar card along with other documents.' Meanwhile, the BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy supports the Election Commission of India on special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, saying it is the responsibility of the poll body to remove any 'Bangladeshi or Pakistani' from the voter list. Supreme Court has allowed EC to continue Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls while advising them to consider allowing Aadhaar, ration cards, and electoral photo identity cards as admissible documents to prove voter identity. A bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi stated in its order, 'We are of the prima facie opinion that in the interest of justice, the Election Commission will also include documents like Aadhaar, Ration Card, Voter ID card, etc. It is for the ECI to decide whether it wants to accept the documents or not, and if it does not, then provide reasons for its decision, which shall be sufficient to satisfy the petitioners. Meanwhile, petitioners are not pressing for an interim stay.' The Election Commission of India (ECI) said that till Saturday evening, 80.11 per cent of electors in Bihar submitted their forms, adding that the commission is moving ahead to complete the collection of Enumeration Forms (EFs) before the stipulated time of July 25. Bihar elections are expected to be held later this year in October or November; however, ECI has not announced an official date. "Why doesn't the EC hold a press conference?": Congress' Shama Mohamed slams ECI over their claims of foreign nationals in Bihar voter list
Kannur (Kerala) [India], July 14 (ANI): Congress leader Shama Mohamed on Monday slammed the Election Commission of India and asked the electoral body to hold a press conference to address their recent claim related to the presence of foreign nationals in the Bihar voter list. A large number of individuals from Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar have been found by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) with Aadhaar cards, domicile certificates and ration cards during house-to-house visits carried out as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar, according to sources. While speaking to ANI, Shama Mohamed asked why the ECI doesn't hold a press conference over the issue, stating that the Supreme Court has clearly said that the Election Commission has no right to decide the 'citizenship' of Indians in India. 'Why doesn't the Election Commission hold a press conference about all these Bangladeshis or Rohingyas, they claim were in the voter list of Bihar?... The Supreme Court clearly says that the EC has no right to decide on the citizenship of Indians in India. It is the right of the Home Ministry', Shama Mohamed told ANI. She asserted that the National Democratic Alliance won 30 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, which became 'null and void' due to ECI's claim of 'Rohingyas and Bangladeshis' in the Bihar voter list. 'Last year, the NDA won 30 seats in the Lok Sabha, so that all becomes null and void because they keep saying that there are Rohingyas and Bangladeshis in the voter list... We want to hear the truth', Mohamed said. ECI sources say that after a proper enquiry to be conducted from 1 Aug till 30 Aug, if found true, such names shall not be included in the final list to be published on 30 Sep 2025. Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said till Saturday evening 80.11 per cent of electors in Bihar submitted their forms, adding that the commission is moving ahead to complete the collection of Enumeration Forms (EFs) before the stipulated time, July 25. Bihar will have assembly polls later in the year. (ANI)
