Downed cell tower has left many Thorhild County residents without service for weeks

Yahooa day ago
Many residents in Thorhild County, Alta., have been without cellphone service for three weeks, after thieves downed a 106-metre Telus tower.
Businesses are scrambling, while families worry about their inability to reach each other or access help during an emergency.
Monique Janice Chartrand, who owns a roofing company, sends her children to stay with their father in the hamlet of Thorhild when she is working out of town.
"Just in case something ever happened — like if one of the kids fell down the stairs, or something like that, and you need to call 911," Chartrand told CBC News Friday.
She recalled how much she relied on her mobile phone during the wildfire evacuation of Fort McMurray, Alta., where she used to live. Residents in parts of Thorhild County, about 85 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, were forced to flee wildfire in May.
"Just imagine trying to get a hold of your loved ones and you're in a panic trying to get all your stuff out of your house," Chartrand said.
Just after 9 a.m. MT on June 14, RCMP say officers responded to a call about the downed cell tower on Range Road 233. All of its copper wiring was stolen.
Investigators believe the vandalism occurred around 5 a.m. that day, when the roughly 150 farmers served by the tower lost service, police say.
Telus customers between Clyde, Alta., and Thorhild County have had wireless services disrupted, a company spokesperson told CBC News via email. They did not specify how many customers have been impacted.
"As a temporary solution, our teams have adjusted nearby antennas to provide as much coverage as possible to the community, though there may be some customers who experience intermittent or no service," the spokesperson said.
"We are working quickly to build a new tower, which we anticipate will be completed in September."
Telus encourages anyone with information about the incident to contact police, they said.
The incident is the second such act of vandalism to affect a Telus tower north of Edmonton in less than three months, the company spokesperson said.
RCMP confirmed to CBC News that, in late March, vandals destroyed another tower near Bruderheim, Alta., a town roughly 45 kilometres northeast of Edmonton and 50 kilometres south of Thorhild County. Although, police said nothing was stolen.
Police said a cut guy wire — a tensioned cable used to stabilize freestanding structures — caused the tower, located off of Highway 15, to collapse.
"We are deeply concerned about the increasing frequency of these acts of vandalism," the Telus spokesperson said.
That tower's rebuild is expected to be finished at the end of the month, they said.

Investigation continues after boy, 5, falls to his death from Edmonton apartment building

Police continue to investigate after a child died in a fall from an Edmonton apartment building last week. In a statement Monday, Edmonton police said they continue to investigate the death of a five-year-old boy who fell to his death in the area of 121st Street and 101st Avenue on July 2. Police said the child fell from the rooftop of an apartment building in the area, but declined to provide further details on the child's death or the status of the investigation. Property management company Hazelview Properties confirmed the building was its high-rise apartment building, The Pinnacle. Company officials described the boy's death as a heartbreaking tragedy. They have offered free counselling services to the family and residents of the building. "We are heartbroken to confirm that a tragic incident occurred at The Pinnacle, where a young child fell from an upper floor and sadly lost his life," Atiya Khan, director of marketing and communications for Hazelview Properties, said in a statement. "Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go out to the child's family and loved ones during this unimaginable time." Company officials said they have been co-operating with authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the child's death. The company said it would not be providing additional details on the incident out of respect for the family's privacy and the ongoing investigation. "At this stage, we have no indication to believe that the incident was caused by any structural issue or defect with the building. All balconies at the property meet the safety requirements set out in the building code," Khan wrote. Company officials said the boy's death has been felt widely among residents. "This is an incredibly difficult moment for the entire community."

Toronto police issued more than 3,000 tickets during 2-week enforcement blitz

During a two-week enforcement blitz last month that targeted drivers in no-stopping zones, Toronto police say they issued 3,220 tickets and towed 245 vehicles across the city. The initiative took place from June 16 to 27, police said in a release Monday. During the blitz, officers increased enforcement during peak periods on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. across high-traffic roads in downtown Toronto. No stopping zones are areas where motorists are banned from stopping except to avoid conflict with other traffic or to comply with a police officer or traffic signals. Drivers who stop in no stopping zones in Toronto face $190 tickets, police said. Toronto police said the initiative was intended to remind drivers of the importance of obeying traffic signs, especially during rush hours, and as a way to support the city's congestion management plan. "This is an intensification of what we do every day to try and help keep Toronto moving during the afternoon rush hour," Mike Harrison, manager of Toronto police's parking enforcement unit, told CBC Toronto ahead of the blitz last month. Police are reminding drivers that while the campaign has come to a close, parking enforcement officers will continue to patrol and fine violators. There is also another enforcement blitz planned for September, police said.

Bethel said officers had already responded to the same block late Saturday night into early Sunday. Police made arrests during that earlier incident and continued to monitor the area throughout the weekend. Officers then returned Sunday after receiving reports of loud music. While responding to a separate incident nearby, officers heard gunfire and rushed back to the block. Bethel said he believes there were around 40 individuals who may have been present at the time of the shooting. He added there may have been an exchange of gunfire and dozens of shell casings were recovered from the scene. Police said one person was taken into custody with a weapon, though their role in the shooting is unclear. Officers had been monitoring the block earlier in the weekend after responding to prior disturbances and arrests related to loud music and gatherings. Police were dispatched to a nearby priority call when they heard gunfire on their return. Bethel described the incident as part of a violent Fourth of July weekend in the city, which saw six homicides and numerous shootings. Over the weekend, eight people were injured after a shooter, possibly multiple shooters, opened fire at a South Philadelphia nightclub. Bethel says the city remains down more than 12% in homicides and 10% in shootings year-over-year. He added that the department's Homicide Unit has a 95% clearance rate, while the Shooting Investigation Group has cleared 36% of its cases.
