Indore: Indore experienced a humid and overcast Sunday with light, scattered rain providing only temporary relief amid the ongoing
monsoon season
. The city recorded 2.8 mm of rainfall during the day, while the day temperature rose slightly to 28.2 degrees Celsius—still 4°C below normal.
The day temperature on Saturday dropped to 26.4 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperature remained steady at 23.4 degrees Celsius.
Though the skies remained largely overcast throughout the day, brief spells of sunlight occasionally broke through the clouds. Humidity levels peaked at 95% by 8:30 am and stood at 92% at 5:30 pm. Winds blew from the west-southwest direction at 17 km/h, contributing to the damp and sticky conditions.
As of Sunday, Indore received 145.1 mm of seasonal rainfall—around 45 mm below the average for this time of year. According to Dr Divya E. Surendran, Senior Meteorologist at IMD Bhopal, three active weather systems are influencing the current conditions: two monsoon troughs and a cyclonic circulation over eastern India. "These are the strongest systems of the season so far, majorly impacting the eastern parts of MP.

Rainfall activity over the Indore-Ujjain division is expected to intensify from July 8," she said, adding that the showers may weaken again by July 10. The synoptic situation includes a monsoon trough extending from northwest India to the Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal, and an active trough line from the northeast Arabian Sea crossing central Madhya Pradesh. While heavy rain alerts are in place for parts of eastern Madhya Pradesh, areas like Indore may continue to see moderate rain and cloudy skies in the coming days. The IMD forecasts similar weather on Monday, with a possibility of increased rainfall as the systems move westward across the region.

Delhi sees rain and cloudy skies, air quality declines to moderate

New Delhi: Parts of the city saw light to very light rain, mostly towards the afternoon on Saturday. However, the intensity of rain is likely to drop over the week. Delhi experienced an overcast sky, and the day remained humid. However, rain in many areas during the late afternoon brought some respite. Meanwhile, the air quality index (AQI) on Saturday was 105 (moderate), compared to 79 a day earlier, thereby breaking the 16-day trend of it being satisfactory. The maximum temperature at the base station, Safdarjung, was recorded at 34.8 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal, compared to 33.2 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The humidity oscillated between 67% and 100%, while the wind speed peaked up to 8 kmph in the easterly and northeasterly directions. On Saturday, the base station Safdarjung recorded 12.9 mm of rainfall till 5.30 pm, while Palam saw only a trace, which is too low to be recorded. Lodhi Road recorded 12 mm of rain, Ridge recorded 0.8 mm, Ayanagar recorded 0.4 mm, Rajghat recorded 11 mm, PUSA recorded 0.5 mm, Mungeshpur recorded 2.5 mm, and Mayur Vihar recorded 0.5 mm of rainfall. The IMD classifies rainfall as 'light' when it is up to 15.5 mm, as 'moderate' when rainfall is from 15.6 mm to 64.4 mm, and as 'heavy' when rainfall is more than 64.4 mm in 24 hours. The IMD has predicted that the city may receive very light to light rain from Sunday, July 13, to July 18. So far, the city has received 69.7 mm of rainfall in July. According to the weather department, for Sunday, the minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to range between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius.

Bridges submerged, boats on roads: Heavy rain hits normal life across MP

Bhopal: Heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has thrown normal life out of gear in parts of Madhya Pradesh. Several bridges, roads, ghats, and low-lying areas are submerged, severely affecting normal life in the town. The situation remained worst, to say the least, in Vindhya region. At Chitrakoot town in Satna district, a boat was seen moving at the Lanka trisection on Saturday morning, highlighting the alarming rise in water levels of the Mandakini river following continuous heavy rainfall. In Maihar town, several areas remained inundated, and a portion of the boundary wall of the newly built Rewa airport also collapsed. In Chitrakoot, a swollen river encroached upon areas near Ramghat and Jankighat, prompting the local administration to issue warnings and restrict public movement near the banks. Several shops and makeshift structures were flooded, while residents living close to the river were advised to move to safer locations. "Around 200 pilgrims who had came to Chitrakoot were rescued. Food arrangements were made for most of them. Around 50 shopkeepers were also rescued," SDM Majhgawan, AP Dwivedi, told TOI. In other districts of Vindhya, Maihar remained affected as waterlogging was reported from several areas of the town. However, it did not rain much on Saturday, bringing a respite. The situation would have been worse if it rained in Rewa on Saturday too, said sources. In Mauganj, the rivers and nullahs remained overflooded, and commutation in several rural areas was hit.

City Parks Cooler, Lack Facilities: Study

New Delhi: An audit of 50 parks across Delhi found that the shaded green areas were up to 20 degrees Celsius cooler in some parks than nearby unshaded concrete spaces outside. However, the report also highlighted issues such as limited access to the parks and the lack of basic amenities in many of them. The audit by green and social organisations found that the average temperature difference between shaded areas of parks and unshaded concrete right across their boundaries was 10 degrees Celsius. In one instance, even the concrete zones peaked at 53.3 degrees Celsius while tree-covered spots within the same park remained at 35 degrees, underscoring the critical cooling power of urban forests. However, despite this natural relief, eight out of 10 parks lacked drinking water facilities and none had official provisions for nests or birdhouses to protect urban birdlife from soaring temperatures. The report also stressed that parks are a necessity and not a luxury, advocating for their round-the-clock access to the public, especially in the densely packed residential areas with high heat stress. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi The audit, held by Greenpeace India in collaboration with COHAS and Youth For Climate Justice, South Asia, aimed to show how the city's green spaces serve as vital buffers against extreme heat and meet the needs of residents and fauna during peak summer months. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo The report found that while Delhi is said to have green cover across 25% of its geographical area, most parks are concentrated in just five districts, leaving large swathes of the city, particularly low-income, congested areas, with minimal access to green relief. This inequity, combined with the concretisation of urban forests, further enhances heat vulnerability in the capital. It stated that the nests or birdhouses installed were by local public and authorities. According to the report, the average surface temperature was 39.2 degrees Celsius in unshaded concrete spaces and 28.9 degrees under tree cover. About 78% of the parks lacked public drinking water, 73% lacked provisions for wildlife like water bowls, and only 28% had waterbodies, many of which were dirty or drying up. Additionally, 74% were closed at some time of the day, with 64% shut during night hours, limiting respite for residents in heat-stressed areas. "In many low-income neighbourhoods, the heat lingers late into the night, yet most parks are locked. It made us realise that parks aren't luxuries; they're life-saving infrastructure. Parks should be open 24/7, with water facilities and shade, as these are basic, life-saving necessities," said Priyanka, a member of the audit team from COHAS. "We also noticed how tree roots were choked with concrete, green patches were disappearing under paving and drinking water was missing," she added. "This audit clearly shows that green cover lowers temperatures dramatically, yet our policies prioritise concrete over canopies. The forest cover in Delhi is still under threat of being converted into big infrastructural projects," said Aakiz Farooq, climate & energy campaigner at Greenpeace India.
