Thousands raised for family of ice hockey star who died at Ibiza hotel

STV News5 days ago
Over £8,000 has been raised for the family of a Dundee ice hockey player who died at a hotel in Ibiza.
Gary Kelly died while on holiday at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio in the early hours of Monday morning after reportedly falling from the third floor.
Tributes poured out for the 19-year-old, with his team, Aberdeen Lynx, describing him as one of their 'brightest young stars' while his girlfriend, Louise Essery, said he had been 'inspiring'.
A fundraiser was launched on behalf of the family on Tuesday, which read: 'We are all feeling the loss of young Gary Kelly.
'And I know you can't put a price on life, but hopefully we can help the family through this as a nicer young man and family you would struggle to find.'
The GoFundMe has so far raised £8,234. You can donate to the cause here.
'I never thought I would be sat here writing a goodbye,' Gary's girlfriend, Louise Essery, wrote in a post on Facebook.
'For those who knew Gary, oh you were so lucky. His passion and dedication was inspiring, whether in hockey, work, or with loved ones. I'm struggling to understand how you are no longer with me.
'It hasn't really hit me yet. Gary taught and showed me valuable lessons that I'll carry with me forever. I think it's important to remember the good times and to celebrate the love he brought into our lives.
'Everything feels heavy, and words can't express the love I have for Gary. I wish you could see how much you are loved. Even though our experiences together have paused, the memories we made will stay with me forever. I miss you so much already.
'Thank you for the kind messages about Gary; they mean a lot.
'I love you forever and always, Gary Kelly.'
The teenager died exactly two weeks after fellow Scot Evan Thomson, 26, who also fell from height at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel.
The hotel has suspended all events following the deaths 'out of respect for those involved' and says it will fully assist authorities.
A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil on the island added: 'For now, it appears to have been an accident. As always, an investigation is underway, and we're awaiting an autopsy to determine the cause of death with certainty.'

Scottish mountain biker first woman to complete tough downhill race

Scottish mountain biker Louise Ferguson has made history by becoming the only woman to complete the final course of the Red Bull Hardline in Wales. The 29-year-old from Fort William, who is based in New Zealand, became the first female rider to qualify in the history of the event, which is held in the Dyfi Valley, on Saturday. In the event's 11 years, a female rider has never completed the course – hailed as one of the toughest downhill mountain bike races in the world – in full. The run is well known due to the scale of its jumps and the challenging terrain. On Sunday, Louise made history by battling slippery conditions to complete the run, becoming the first ever rider to win the women's category in the event's history. She beat some of the world's best female riders including Vaea Verbeeck, Kirsten Van Horne, Cami Nogueira and Hannah Bergemann. Ferguson, currently ranked 14th in the world, recently won the British National Championships the week before attending Red Bull Hardline UK for the second time. She said to get through the finish line was the 'craziest feeling'. 'It doesn't feel real, to be honest'. 'I'm just taking it all in, and I'm super proud and happy with the effort. I can't explain how nervous I was at the top, so to get through to the finish line was just the craziest feeling. It was super greasy at the top – some of the guys are making it look easy, but it's not.' 'It's hard to explain how much it means to achieve this. The other girls have definitely got this and I would've loved to have come down with them. 'I know it's just a matter of time and it's going to be something I can do with them in the future. To see them at the finish means so much. The support is unreal and our community is something else. I'm just so happy.' Celtic 'raise' Jakob Breum transfer offer with winger search surging as Daizen Maeda to Brentford addressed

Brendan Rodgers is keen to add more firepower to the Scottish champions frontline this summer Celtic have reportedly raised their offer fo Go Ahead Eagles star Jakob Breum. ‌ Brendan Rodgers is on the hunt for wide men and is said to be interested in the 21-year-old this summer. ‌ The Hoops are in dire need of reinforcements on the flanks after Nicolas Kuhn joined Como in a £17.2million deal - while Jota is sidelined until next year which has left Celtic short. ‌ But the Glasgow Times report that interest in Breum is now intensifying after an original £1.5million offer was knocked back. The Scottish champions are said to have returned with a £1.75million that included add-ons - but it has now been raised again with £3million "put on the table." It is claimed that a £6.5million price tag has been placed on Breum by the Eagles - with the Dutch Cup holders unwilling to accept a "knockdown" offer. In terms of outgoings, versatile forward Daizen Maeda is reportedly on Brentford's agenda as they look to replace Bryan Mbeumo following his move to Manchester United. Despite Maeda stating his focus is on the Hoops going into the new season, the murmur has persisted amid reports of a £25million valuation from Parkhead chiefs. ‌ But former Celt Charlie Mulgrew insists the time is not right for the Japan international to seal a Premier League switch. Mulgrew told Go Radio: 'He probably could (handle the Premier League) with that pace and power. There is a lot of pace and power down there now. ‌ "There is a lot of off-the-ball pressing, which he would be perfect for, and counter pressing. He counter-presses teams by himself. "As soon as he loses it in their third, he chases three or four men, and he is a dream to play with. "As a defender, when somebody presses that high up the pitch. It makes your job so much easier because you can stand on the halfway line and kind of people rush passes back to you. ‌ 'He could do it down south. But he is getting towards 30 now, so I don't think he will go." Millwall in transfer talks to sign Luton Town star Alfie Doughty in latest move

EXCLUSIVE: Millwall are looking to bolster their attacking options with a deal for Alfie Doughty, who could leave Luton Town as they gear up for their League One opener Millwall are in talks with Luton Town in a bid to try and strike a deal for Alfie Doughty. ‌ The 25-year-old left wing-back was one of Luton's star performers in the Premier League before the Hatters suffered consecutive relegations and has been the subject of transfer interest this summer with the club now preparing for life in League One. ‌ And Mirror Football understands that Millwall have made a play to try and sign Doughty ahead of Luton's season opener next Friday. ‌ The Lions are admirers of Doughty and would deploy him in a more advanced role in their attack rather than at left-back, where they are currently well stocked. Landing a player of Doughty's quality would be another statement of intent from Millwall, who broke their transfer record to sign Josh Coburn from Middlesbrough earlier this summer. A return to the Championship would appeal to Doughty, who was also linked with a move last summer before staying put at Kenilworth Road. The player was pulled from the starting XI shortly before kick-off in Luton's pre-season friendly against Tottenham on Saturday. Matt Bloomfield revealed after the game that transfer speculation was behind Doughty's absence. 'Listen, Alfie has had interest all through the summer because he's a player who played at a very good level,' the Hatters boss said, via Luton Today. ‌ 'In the Premier League he had a very good season and last year he showed some real top moments, so he has had some interest, Alfie, and I'm sure that will go on for the rest of the window. 'It was the right decision I made before the game, post team sheets, was that he wouldn't play, so that was the way the game went. I just said in the other room, there's a lot going on in pre-season. 'It's very rare, I think, that both teams change their left full-backs between team sheets and kick-off, which happened today, so it was the right decision for Alfie not to play but I'm sure he'll be absolutely fine and we'll welcome him back into the group as soon as we can, but he'll be fine.'
