Green Pune monsoon marathon to be held on July 13, 3-km ‘Pawathon' the key highlight
This year, the marathon introduces several measures aimed at environmental sustainability, including race T-shirts made from recycled bottles, seed ball giveaways, and saplings for all runners.
Organised by city-based Gold Leaf Entertainment, the event returns following what organisers described as a 'tremendous response' in its inaugural edition.
'The marathon promotes a net-zero carbon footprint. With the Pawathon, we want to celebrate fitness and the outdoors with our furry companions. I had a pet. So, I know the companionship they carry, and I see people around Pune taking them out for walks. So why not arrange a race for them?' Iyer told the Indian Express.
He said such mass events have the potential to raise awareness and scale impact, highlighting the mass-scale tree plantation drives to be held as part of the marathon. 'We bring together around a thousand participants on the ground, who plant trees in the forested areas near the venue,' said Iyer. 'In a single location, we plant 500 to 600 trees, and across the region, the number goes beyond 2,000,' he said.
Participants will run across various categories, including the 21-km half-marathon, 10-km and 5-km races, a 2-km fun run, and the 3-km 'Pawathon'.
The half marathon will cover routes through Taljai Hills, Padmavati Parking, Treasure Park, and Aranyeshwar Temple, looping back to the starting point.
The event's emphasis on low-waste management and green mobility aligns with growing efforts to blend community participation with climate consciousness in urban sporting events.
It is supported by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, Belvalkar Group, and Eco Factory Foundation, among others.
Electric bikes will be used for coordination and route support, and water stations will offer recycled cups. Over 5,000 saplings will be distributed to promote afforestation efforts.
Plans are underway to expand the event to other cities. 'We are trying to do it not only in Pune, but also in Bombay. Every city has a different problem. Bombay has a problem with flooding. We can have something related to that,' Iyer said.

'Lack of sting, application': What's worrying coach Vimal Kumar most about Lakshya Sen's poor form
Lakshya Sen, the biggest Indian name in men's singles badminton, is experiencing a horrendous 2025, suffering multiple early exits in the tournaments. Coach Vimal Kumar explains what is wrong with Sen's game. read more Indian badminton sensation Lakshya Sen is having a tough 2025 as he struggles for form and consistency, suffering seven first-round eliminations in 10 tournaments. His best performance so far has been the quarter-finals at the All England Badminton, which has also been the only tournament in 2025 in which he has managed to go beyond the Round of 32. His latest defeat came at the Round of 32 in the Japan Open, where he lost 21-19, 21-11 to World No.7 Kodai Naraoka of Japan. World No.18 Sen, who hails from Almora, started brightly in the Thursday match as the scores were levelled 17-17 in the first game at one stage, but his inability to close out the game came back to bite him as he went to to lose 21-19. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Coach Vimal Kumar explains Lakshya Sen's struggles Sen had faced similar issues at the Paris Olympics 2024 when he lost the bronze medal match to Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia despite winning the first game. He had also blundered three game points in the first game of the semi-finals against Viktor Axelsen before losing the match. Former Indian badminton coach Vimal Kumar, who is also Sen's childhood trainer, is worried the young prodigy is failing to apply himself in the closing stages. 'I'm disappointed and a little concerned. Till 17-all ( in the first game against Naraoka), he was OK, but Lakshya should have taken the first game," Vimal told the Indian Express. 'He's still not applying himself in those crucial situations. He needed to push pace for Kodai can be beaten when you vary pace.' Naraoka made a blistering start to the second game but faced stiff resistance from Sen as the Indian took the score to 6-10 after being 1-8 down, but once again lost momentum as the Japanese upped the ante with lethal smashes in the absence of any significant net play from the Indian shuttler. Vimal Kumar was also quite critical of Sen's game at the net. 'Lakshya was not sharp at the net and Kodai was comfortable playing him. The shuttle wasn't spinning in dribbles or tumbles leading to errors and lifts were not great,' the former Indian badminton player told Indian Express. While Sen has recovered from shoulder and ankle injuries, Vimal said his smash shots have also lost a lot of sting over the years. 'When I speak to him he says shoulder is OK. But maybe back of his mind, he's still wary and hence tentative (about injury). But the big problem is when he comes under the shuttle (ideal position), his hard smashes on the body lack sting,' the coach said. 'Last couple of years it's becoming a little ineffective.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'He tends to play slices and half smashes, but he's not employing the hard smash from good positions. Typically if he hits one and it gets returned, the next two three shots lack the same power and sting so he can't finish the down stroke,' he added.

Star India Fast Bowler Suffers Injury During Practice Ahead Of 4th Test: Report
The fourth Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester from July 23 to 27. The fourth Test of the ongoing five-match India-England series will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester from July 23 to 27. After suffering a heartbreaking defeat by 22 runs in the third red-ball match at Lord's earlier this week, the Indian team would like to come back with a big performance in Manchester next week and level the series ahead of the series finale at The Oval in London. Ahead of the big match in a venue where India has never won a Test match in the last 89 years, India suffered a big setback in the form of an injury to a star pacer. According to a report in Indian Express on Thursday (July 17), Team India hit the nets on Thursday, and during the practice, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh injured his bowling hand. 'Arshdeep, who is yet to feature in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, suffered a cut while stopping a ball hit by Sai Sudharsan on his follow-through. After the session concluded, the medical team swung into action, checking if the 26-year-old would require stitches," the report read. India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said, 'Arshdeep took a ball while he was bowling there; Sai hit a ball, and he tried to stop it, and it's just a cut. So we have to see how bad the cut is. Obviously, the medical team have taken him off to see a doctor, and obviously, if he needs stitches or doesn't need stitches, it's going to be important to our planning for the next few days." Arshdeep, who was picked in India's Test squad for the first time on May 24 for the red-ball series in England, warmed the bench in the first three matches, but there was a possibility of his inclusion in India's playing XI for the fourth Test in Manchester in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah, who tops the ICC Test bowler's ranking, is expected to miss the fourth Test next week as part of his workload management. If Bumrah misses the match due to workload management and Arshdeep due to injury, then India will have no option but to include Prasidh Krishna or Shardul Thakur in the playing XI once again. Prasidh played in the first two Tests of the ongoing series but failed to impress with his bowling, and he also faced heavy criticism for leaking too many runs whereas Thakur also didn't impress with his batting and bowling in Leeds Test. Arshdeep's record in First Class cricket Arshdeep is a left-arm pacer and has played 21 first-class matches so far, in which he has dismissed 66 batters. His best bowling figures in the red-ball format of the game are six wickets for 40 runs, and he has two five-wicket hauls to his name. In the past, apart from representing Punjab in the Ranji Trophy, Arshdeep has played for Kent in county cricket. view comments First Published: July 17, 2025, 18:25 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
