What's spring in St. Joseph without the community markets? Well, the wait is over because this Saturday is the return of Market Days.
Supporting local businesses has never been easier with a wide selection of flowers, baked goods, pottery, jewelry and more. These markets are an excellent opportunity to find the perfect gifts for yourself or a loved one, get to know local businesses and engage with the St. Joseph community. The first community market of the season goes from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Center for Joy, located at 1202 Felix St.
St. Joseph is officially entering the wedding season with the warm weather, but St. Joe's Comedy Wedding is no typical ceremony.
St. Joseph residents have been cordially invited to the most outrageous wedding of the year. Lora and Billy are tying the knot, despite a long-standing, bitter and hilarious feud between the groom and the bride's family. What could go wrong? Get ready for an evening of dancing, laughing, auctions and an incredible meal. This isn't just a wedding, it's an experience! Guests should arrive between 7 and 7:15 p.m. with the nuptials beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at 515 S 6th St. Regular and VIP table tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 816-279-1225.
What better way to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend than with a party hosted by one of St. Joseph's most popular pubs?
D&G Pub is hosting its first-ever Memorial Day celebration. There's going to be a free fireworks display, an ice-cold beer station, grilled brats, a campfire pit and roasted marshmallows. Come for the celebrations and stay for the bonding and camaraderie. The celebration goes from 7:30 p.m. to 1:15 a.m. at D&G, located at 1918 Frederick Ave.

Here's the thing about having a stack of unfinished manuscripts. At some point, each one needs to have its ass kicked out of the nest. Big Shield gets its big shove today. The pre-orders were surprisingly solid. I have no idea whether anyone will like it. I'm too close to it to know whether it's any good. I've read it at least twenty times. Refined it. Added to it. Subtracted from it. It's ultimately a word-by-word exercise in reading and re-reading and re-re-reading with no clear ending point other than deciding one day that it has to end. On the Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend, the first thing I thought when I woke up (other than, 'I need to piss') was that it's time for Big Shield to leave the logjam. It has officially exited, joining Father of Mine, Son of Mine, and On Our Way Home. You can get the Big Shield ebook for only 99 cents. It's stupid, I know, to sell it for so little. I don't care about the money. (I really don't.) PFT pays the bills. I like having a creative outlet to balance out the endless stream of (as Simms calls it) copy/paste/snarky comment about football. Big Shield is the first one about football. Pro football (but for legal reasons not the NFL). Football, gambling, the mob. The goal is to tell a good story, with circumstances that seem realistic and dialogue that rings true. Conflict. Tension. Twists. Turns. An ending that is surprising but, in hindsight, inevitable. Big Shield has all of that. I hope you'll give it a try. I hope you'll like it. If you do, I hope you'll check out one of the other three. I hope you'll anticipate the next one. And the next one. And the next one. Currently, there are six others stuck in the hopper, and a seventh one is under construction. (There's also a short story that scared the shit out of me as I was writing it; I'm still figuring out what to do with that one.) The goal is 20 novels. If I get to 20, I'll probably go for 30. At some point over the past five years, writing became part of the routine, the same as doing PFT Live every weekday morning and then looking for things to write about here until I unplug from the real world around nine o'clock and spend a couple of hours in the strange realm of make believe. I never have writer's block. I start typing, and the words roll out. When it gets going, there's a trance that's as potent as any liquor or drug. And probably as addictive. I'll keep writing because it's fun. Hopefully, it's fun for you to read what I've written. I hope you will. I enjoy hearing from people who found themselves whisked away to a different time, different place. Wanting to know what happens next. Caring about characters who don't exist but who seem very real. If you haven't read anything I've written (other than the stuff you read here), Big Shield is the perfect place to start. Especially since, at 99 cents, I'm basically giving it away.

I did not have 'Bella Thorne proposal controversy' on my 2025 bingo card. Though given the chaotic state of the world, I probably should have. On Sunday, Aug. 17, Bella Throne shared an Instagram post showing her proposal to fiancé Mark Emms. The sweet post, captioned '3 years ago we met, 1 year later he proposed, now 1 year later so did I,' was meant to celebrate the one year anniversary of their engagement and Mark's original proposal. Instead, it quickly devolved into a debate about gender roles in the comments. 'Okay ladies, let's not normalize this, okay?' reads a top comment—it currently has 93, 847 likes. Another asks, 'If he already proposed why did you do it lol I'm confused.' More critics flocked to the comments, adding in confused emojis and GIFs, prompting debates among fans. Things got so chaotic, Bella herself addressed the discourse in a since-deleted Instagram Story. 'The comments on my post are hilarious,' she wrote, per E! News. 'Totally split down the middle. Half of you are like let's not normalize proposing to your partner—other half is like f--k yeah girl power this is the sweetest!!' While I'm glad Bella isn't letting the negativity in her comments affect her happiness, there is a dark side to the criticisms that can't be ignored. This isn't just a case of trolls hating on Bella for the fun of it, it's sexism. When people criticize Bella's decision to propose, they're implying that she shouldn't have done it because that's not her role as a woman. Her actions, then, threaten the gender binary they seem to hold so dear. This 'controversy' isn't about Bella, it's about gender roles within the patriarchy—most posters are just good at hiding it. One commenter, however, said the quiet part out loud, writing, 'Men don't need more encouragement to be more energetically feminine than they already are.' It's hard not to see these criticisms as related to growing transphobia and backlash to LGBTQ+ rights, as well as the rise of trad wife content—Nara Smith cooking videos, the Princess Treatment trend, etc.—all of which promotes traditional gender roles. Not only that, but the brazenness of these critiques—why are we posting this on former child star Bella Thorne's Instagram?—points to a growing conservative slant in American culture and media that allows people to feel comfortable spouting these views on a stranger's Instagram post. This might seem like harmless Instagram drama, but assuming these commenters are serious in their beliefs, it's actually a pretty dark indicator of where we are right now, and where we might be headed.
