Three jailed over RM24.2 million bank fraud

KOTA KINABALU: Three individuals were each sentenced to five years in prison by the High Court here on Friday for assisting an organised criminal group involved in a RM24.2 million fixed deposit fraud. Self-employed Sugumaran K. Ponniah, 56, teacher Subramaniam Thangavelu, 57, and fisherman Hasran Magin, 47, pleaded guilty separately before Judge Datuk Duncan Sikodol.
Advertisement The offences took place at the MBSB branch here between April and July last year. They were convicted under Section 130W of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 10 years' imprisonment. 'WHAT could a royal family member be possibly doing in a nightclub'? 'Or is this a typo when it should be a high school literature club. 🙏🏻' Such are the questions playing in the mind of netizens after Malaysiakini reported that the police are investigating a member of the Pahang royal family who allegedly stabbed a man in a Kuantan nightclub last month. Kuantan district police chief Wan Zahari Wan Busu who confirmed receiving a report on the May 8 incident further told the news portal that an arrest has been made to facilitate investigation into the case. However, he declined to confirm whether the royalty mentioned in the report was the individual arrested or whether he was the same individual who was implicated last year in an attack against road construction worker Alias Awang who was allegedly stabbed and shot at. Wan Zahari added that investigations are being conducted under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means. The investigation paper on the case will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor once the probes are completed 'in the near future'. Going by the Malaysiakini report, digital creator JalalMisai (@jllmisai) expressed amazement at the stabbing incident which is said to have stemmed from the 30-year-old victim 'having bumped into the royalty figure twice previously (at a separate entertainment establishment)'. 'The victim was asked (by a friend) to go to a nightclub in Kuantan (to settle the matter) … Upon arriving, the victim handed over RM1,200 as angpow before his head was hit with a glass jug and stabbed in the buttock,' the poster recounted the incident based on a June 5 police report making the rounds on social media. They were charged with committing the offence which caused Alias to be injured on the right thigh at a horse stable in Jalan Teluk Sisek, Kuantan about 12.20am on June 6, 2024. The five pleaded not guilty at the Kuantan Magistrate's Court to the charge of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means to the road maintenance worker who was apparently also shot at (but the bullet missed him). Following the incident, Pahang Crown Prince Tengku Mahkota Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah had ordered the police to conduct an immediate, transparent and fair investigation into the case while stressing that 'nobody – even royalty – is above the law'. – June 14, 2025

One dead, two injured in shooting at Brickfields restaurant
KUALA LUMPUR: A man died while two of his friends were injured after being shot at a restaurant in Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields here, on Friday (June 13) night. Brickfields district police chief ACP Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said in the incident at about 10.50pm, the three local men aged between 30 and 50 were eating with several friends before being approached by two men on a motorcycle who fired several shots at them. "One of the victims was confirmed dead at the scene due to gunshots and his body was sent to the University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) for a post-mortem. "Two other victims are receiving treatment at PPUM with one of them suffering serious injuries while the other sustained minor injuries," he told reporters at the scene early on Saturday (June 14) morning. Ku Mashariman said further investigations are underway including examining closed-circuit camera footage, identifying the motive for the incident and the suspects involved. "There is nothing to alarm the public at this time and the police will investigate this case from various angles. "Members of the public with information about the incident are advised to contact the police or the nearest police station to assist in the investigation," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code. - Bernama

Retired doctor loses nearly RM4mil to family friend
IPOH: A retired doctor lost about RM3.9mil to a non-existent financial scheme he had continually invested in for over a decade with a woman he met through his late wife. The 74-year-old was introduced to the scheme more than 10 years ago through a family friend, said Perak police chief Comm Datuk Noor Hisam Noordin. The doctor was cheated by the female suspect with whom he got acquainted by his late wife in 2014, he said. 'The suspect had offered him the opportunity to invest in a scheme. 'Having been briefed by the suspect, he got interested and trusted her because she was his wife's friend,' Comm Noor Hisam said in a statement yesterday. The doctor first invested in the scheme in December 2014, when he gave the suspect RM12,000 in person at a bank in Ipoh. 'Over the years until April 9 this year, he continued making payments, both in cash and through bank transfers to the suspect's personal account, amounting to RM3.9mil. 'The victim only recently realised that he had been deceived after never receiving any returns or profits from the investment scheme,' Comm Noor Hisam said, adding that a report was lodged at the district police station here on Thursday. 'Each time he asked about the money, the suspect would give various excuses,' he added. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
