Indian equities set to open flat as traders eye domestic, US inflation data

Indian equity benchmarks are likely to open flat on Tuesday, chiming trends in broader Asian markets, as investors await domestic inflation data for July and a key U.S. inflation print that could influence near-term interest rate expectations.
The Gift Nifty futures were trading at 24,599.5, as of 7:53 a.m. IST, indicating that the Nifty 50 near Monday's close of 24,585.05.
Other Asian markets were tepid, with the MSCI Asia ex-Japan index edging 0.15% higher. Wall Street fell overnight as investors weighed trade and geopolitical developments ahead of data.
U.S. consumer prices, due to released later in the day, are likely to influence U.S. Federal Reserve's rate-cut trajectory, with markets implying around a 90% probability of rate easing in September and at least another rate cut by the year-end.
Traders showed scant reaction to U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order extending the tariff truce with China by another 90 days.
Trump is also due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday to discuss ending Russia's war on Ukraine.
Investors are keeping an eye on domestic retail inflation data, set to be released after market hours on Tuesday.
Cooling food prices likely reduced retail inflation to an eight-year low of 1.76% in July, below the Reserve Bank of India's 2%-6% tolerance band for the first time in more than six years, a Reuters poll of economists showed.
Both the Nifty and Sensex climbed nearly 1% on Monday, lifted by a post-earnings rally in State Bank of India and Tata Motors.
This rebound followed six consecutive weekly losses, driven by concerns over U.S. tariffs and subdued corporate earnings.
Domestic institutional investors have been net buyers of Indian stocks for 26 consecutive sessions, with the flows into equity mutual funds surging to a record high in July, lifting the DIIs' stake in Indian stocks to an all-time high.

India's retail inflation slows to 8-year low of 1.55% in July

NEW DELHI: India's retail inflation in July eased below 2% for the first time in eight years, on the back of falling prices of food items including vegetables and pulses, hurting some farmers, but will have limited impact on the central bank's policy decision. Annual retail inflation slowed to 1.55% in July as compared to 2.10% in June, and below a Reuters poll of 1.76%. The figure was the lowest since June 2017, according to a government statement, and below the Reserve Bank of India's tolerance band of 2%-6%. The RBI is mandated to not let inflation fall below or above the range for more than three quarters. 'These inflation numbers are on expected lines,' said Madan Sabnavis, an economist at Bank of Baroda, adding that the impact on the RBI's policy decision will be muted. The central bank lowered its inflation forecast for the current financial year to 3.1% from 3.7% earlier at its meeting earlier this month. The Reserve Bank of India held key interest rates steady earlier this month, saying the growth prospects of the domestic economy remained bright. That was before U.S. President Donald Trump imposed an additional tariff of 25% on India - raising duties on Indian goods to 50%, among the highest levied on U.S. trading partners. The Indian government has estimated about 55% of the country's merchandise exports to the United States will be subject to the tariffs. Some economists expect the low inflation and growth impact from tariffs to leave room for another rate cut. 'The RBI's already-lowered 12-month forecast may be undershot, raising the likelihood of further rate cuts, particularly as U.S. tariffs could shave 30–40 bps off GDP growth,' said Sujan Hajra, chief economist at Anand Rathi Group in Mumbai. Food prices have been the main driver for the drastic fall in inflation for the last eight months. Prices in July fell 1.76% compared to a revised fall of 1.01% in June. Vegetable prices fell 20.69% compared with a 19% year-on-year fall in June, while prices of pulses dropped 13.76% compared to a 12% decline in the previous month. Declining food prices are beginning to hurt farmers, Citibank's chief India economist Samiran Chakraborty said in a note earlier this month. Farm cost inflation has risen while food prices are entering deflationary territory, Chakraborty said, citing this as a key reason that Citi's rural consumption index has peaked. On a month-on-month basis, vegetable prices rose although the cost of pulses continued to decline. Core inflation, which excludes volatile items such as food and energy and is an indicator of domestic demand, was at 4%-4.12% in July versus 4.4%-4.5% in the previous month, according to two economists. India's official statistics agency does not publish core inflation data.

India's space regulator picks Google-backed PixxelSpace for home-grown satellite constellation

India's space regulator has picked a consortium led by Google-backed startup PixxelSpace to build a commercial home-grown constellation of earth observation satellites, with an investment of more than 12 billion rupees (nearly $137 million) over the next five years, it said on Tuesday. The consortium, comprising local space tech firms Piersight Space, Satsure Analytics India and Dhruva Space, will design, build, and operate the satellites, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) said. The PixxelSpace-led consortium won the project, outbidding Indian defence equipment makers Astra Microwave and Bharat Electronics. The Indian government wants to reduce its dependence on foreign systems, including the widely used U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS), and says its regional navigation satellite system, called NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), provides more accurate domestic navigation and that its use would benefit the economy. This is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's drive for self-reliance, which has also expanded the use of NavIC. India has also been pushing tech giants to make smartphones compatible with its home-grown navigation system within months, worrying the likes of Samsung, Xiaomi and Apple.

India's stock benchmarks inch lower ahead of inflation data

Indian equity benchmarks inched lower on Tuesday as a drop in financials weighed ahead of key U.S. and domestic inflation readings. The Nifty 50 fell 0.4% to 24,487.4 points and the BSE Sensex shed 0.46% to 80,235.59. Investors await U.S. CPI data due later in the day which will guide the Federal Reserve's rate-cut path. Lower U.S. rates typically boost the appeal of emerging market equities, including India, as yields on U.S. Treasuries fall. Eight of the 16 major sectors logged gains. The broader small-caps were flat, while mid-caps slipped 0.3%. Financials, which gained 0.9% in the previous session, reversed course and fell 1% on Tuesday. IT rose 0.4%, on the back of a U.S.-China tariff truce extension that averts triple-digit duties that is expected to shield U.S. growth, curb inflation risks, and support corporate discretionary spending, including on technology. Pharma advanced 0.7%, buoyed by strong results from Abbott India and Alkem Laboratories. The sector, like IT, counts the U.S. as a key market. Indian shares gain ahead of US-Russia talks; SBI, Tata Motors rise post earnings Investors also await India's July retail inflation data, due after market hours, with a Reuters poll forecasting an eight-year low of 1.76% on cooling food prices. The modest sized drop in benchmark indexes 'reflects reluctance among investors to make significant moves ahead of key inflation data, while uncertainty also lingers with a second round of tariff hikes scheduled later this month,' said Devarsh Vakil, head of prime research at HDFC Securities. Among stocks, Marksans Pharma and Astral fell 11.1% and 8.1% after reporting weaker quarterly profits. Bata India dropped 4% after quarterly profit declined due to sluggish footwear sales and higher costs. Yatra Online extended its post-results surge, jumping after a fourfold rise in profit prompted price target hikes from Investec and Antique Stock Broking.
