A Pixie Cut For Thick Hair Can Be Transformational - Here's How To Do it Right

Elle3 days ago
Pixie cuts are the ultimate statement haircut; short, choppy and completely exposing in the best way. Where long hair can be used as an accessory to shy behind, there's no hiding behind a bold, powerful pixie cut. On fine hair, the cut can be relatively effortless to achieve – for naturally thick hair, it's a completely different story. Similarly to getting a dramatic bob haircut, nobody should venture into the world of pixie cuts without the help of an expert stylist.
'Having a pixie isn't just a haircut. It's a whole vibe,' says Hershesons' hairstylist Dale Herne. 'With short hair, there's something really empowering about it. But it's not just about the hair itself. You've got to think about how it's going to work with your lifestyle, your energy, and your overall look.'
Here, he outlines the need-to-know details of getting a pixie cut for thick hair, including how to style it.
Unfortunately, getting a pixie cut for thick hair is far more complicated than just buzzing or snipping your lengths. There are many elements to consider beyond just looking at your face shape and hair texture.
'When you're getting a pixie on thick hair, it's got to be cut extremely well,' explains Herne. 'You need to loosen it up at the root when removing weight or adding texture — otherwise, it can end up looking like a little microphone, or even a small afro. A pixie is all about movement and texture. If it's cut too thick or heavy, it'll just sit there as a silhouette of hair, instead of giving you that lived-in texture and flow.'
While we always recommend taking a reference photo to your appointment too, it's important to remember than not all styles will necessarily work for thicker hair densities. 'When it comes to what type of pixie suits thick hair, that's a tricky one. Because when you're cutting hair, it's never one-size-fits-all,' he adds. 'It's about what suits the person. Their face shape, their bone structure, and their character.'
That being said, when done right, a pixie cut for thick hair can be totally transformational. Just don't skip the consultation appointment first.
Surprisingly, pixie cuts also require a certain level of styling finesse. It's very rarely as simple as waking up and stepping out as is.
'Whatever pixie you go for, the key to styling thick hair is to keep the texture soft and defined,' says Herne. 'Misting in Air Dry Spray UV gives that undone, natural finish — adds grit, definition, and movement — without weighing the hair down. Plus, the built-in UV protection helps keep the hair healthy and protected, especially in the summer.'

The 7 Biggest Easter Eggs You Missed In '1923' Season Two

If there's one thing that Taylor Sheridan, the brain behind Yellowstone and 1923, has finessed it's his ability to make each detail — each glass, grave, and gesture in his intricately woven stories — a portal through which the past is never truly past. A case in point is 1923's second season, in which Sheridan's penchant for layered storytelling reveals itself through even more intricate, history-laden Easter eggs. Don't be mistaken, though: these are not simply nods to the Yellowstone universe or winks to attentive fans, but thoughtful narrative correspondences and motifs that hint at the show's meditation on American identity. These are the Easter eggs you may have missed from 1923 season two. Throughout season two of 1923, the Duttons use a remote cliff to get rid of dangerous enemies — a tradition fans may recognise as 'the train station' from Yellowstone. In 1923, we see earlier Duttons use the exact same spot, hinting at how this dark family 'solution' has been passed down through generations. Cara's letters in season two don't just serve as narration; some lines are lifted almost word-for-word from the journal entries of Margaret Dutton in 1883 and from voiceovers in Yellowstone. This is a nod to how Dutton women have always shaped and remembered the family's story. The set of vintage whiskey glasses — used by Cara and later seen in John Dutton's hands on Yellowstone — get extra screen time. One scene even has Cara hiding them during a Prohibition raid, linking the items specifically to the family's American saga across the decades. In season two of 1923, Spencer hands down a knife once belonging to his sister Elsa (from 1883) to another family member. The knife's journey is a direct, physical link between Dutton generations — and a symbol of the family's history of survival. When new graves are dug in season two, cameras linger on the headstones of 'Margaret' and 'Elsa' — names that may ring a bell with fans of 1883. Cara even whispers lines Elsa once said. Each grave can be interpreted as a historical marker, quietly tying all three shows together. Some of the rancher rivals in season two have family names that pop up as enemies in later in the Dutton's stories in Yellowstone. Sheridan's delicate weaving of intergenerational trauma hints at the fact that the major feuds don't simply end, instead they're passed on to each generation. A tribal character warns that 'the land will have the seventh,' echoing the legend mentioned in Yellowstone about the Dutton family's seventh generation being fated to 'return' the land. This subtle secretive undercurrent hints at an unresolved mystery spanning the entire franchise. 1923 is available to stream now on Paramount+. 'Absolute Travesty': Fans Shocked By Huge Awards Snub For 'The Handmaid's Tale' And Elisabeth Moss

After an absolutely action-packed finale that had viewers on the edge of their seats and critics lapping up each plot-turn, many would've thought The Handmaid's Tale was a sure thing in yesterday's Emmy announcements. However fans (and critics, many of whom had predicted a slew of nominations for the show and its star Elisabeth Moss) of The Handmaid's Tale were shocked yesterday when the huge awards show - arguably the biggest television awards in the world - snubbed the show. The Handmaid's Tale received only one nomination for Cherry Jones, who played Holly, June's mother. She was nominated in the category of Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Many expected the show to sweep the nominations board as it was the last series and the final chance to celebrate a show that's been loved by so many fans. But a nomination for Elisabeth Moss' portrayal of June, which saw her experience every emotion under the sun and lead a revolution in the show's sixth series, seemed a dead cert. Her failure to receive an acting nomination was marked as one of the biggest snubs by most industry publications, many of which had themselves put her at the top of the list for mentions. Some have speculated about the political nature of the show and whether that made nominating it particularly tricky. Of course it could just be that, in a particularly strong year for television, the show was crowded out. Severance and Adolescence in particular led the lists of show received 27 nominations and The Studio beat Ted Lasso's previous record for nominations for a new show with 23 mentions. Other shows that got nominations include Andor, The Diplomat, The Last Of Us, Slow Horses, The White Lotus and Paradise. So, while it is a crowded year, fans will also wonder why the quality of The Handmaid's Tale didn't make that cut. The show has had nominations before - 77 in total - and, in 2017, Elisabeth Moss won the award for Lead Actress In A Drama Series. That year the show also won Outstanding Drama Series. Regardless, fans of the show were outraged on social media. On X, one fan wrote: 'The Handmaid's Tale got no Emmy nominations? Absolute travesty.' Another cited the performances of Yvonne Strahovski, saying: 'The fact that the handmaid's tale ended and this queen never got to hold an emmy for her portrayal of Serena Joy should be considered a crime.' This New Video of Beyoncé's Daughter Rumi Shows Just How Much She's Grown on Tour

THE RUNDOWN Rumi Carter is gaining confidence each time she appears on her mom Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter Tour—and her growth is especially clear in a video her grandmother Tina Knowles shared on July 13 from the Atlanta show. The 7-year-old joins her mom and big sister, Blue Ivy Carter, while Beyoncé sings 'Protector.' Rumi twirls as she steps out onstage, waves at the crowd, and later mouths the words 'I love you' to them. She beams when Bey tells everyone to 'give it up for Rumi.' The clip is adorable, and her grandmother couldn't contain her pride on Instagram. Knowles gushed about Rumi, writing, 'My grandbaby girl Rumi in Red ❤️' Watch the clip, which already has 535,000 views, in full below: Rumi has wanted to be onstage for years. In June, Tina told ELLE UK that Rumi began asking her mom during the 2023 Renaissance World Tour if she could join. 'Rumi, for the last tour, just every day, said, 'I want to go out there. I want to,'' Tina said. 'She wanted to experience it, too. And so Beyoncé is allowing her to do it this time. And I'm really happy about it, because she has fun out there. She gets to be a kid, and when she gets offstage, she's right back to being Rumi, the little kid, you know, the little 7-year-old, adorable.' In May, Tina noted that Rumi was learning from Blue, calling it 'big sis energy in training. 🥹' 'The way she watches Blue and mirrors her every move… you can tell she's taking notes,' Tina wrote. 'She doesn't just want to join the legacy…she wants to SLAY it too! Rumi said on last tour that she was ready to hit the stage. She learned choreography and was ready. I'm so happy to see her on stage with her mommy and her sister. She really did straight out there. One day she's gonna cut loose and walk down the runway one day you watch!! Rumi❤️❤️ is also a great songwriter already! She will be a force to be reckoned with just wait!❤️❤️'
