GMRL extends tender for Phase 1 till May 1, cites extensive pre-bid queries
The Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has extended the deadline for submitting tenders for the construction of the first phase of the Gurugram Metro project to May 1, a senior GMRL official said, citing delays caused by extensive pre-bid queries. The tenders were to be opened on April 22.
The corporation floated the tender on March 8 for the proposed stretch from the Millennium City Centre station to Sector 9, including a 1.85-km spur to Dwarka Expressway and a ramp for a depot in Sector 33.
'The date for opening the tender will now be May 1, from the scheduled April 22. Bidders had several questions with regards to the project and these were answered. Apart from this the corporation is working with GMDA and other agencies in the city to expedite the start of civil construction work,' said Chander Shekhar Khare, CEO, GMRL and managing director, HMRTC (Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Limited).
According to the tender document, the contractor will build a 15.22-kilometre Metro rail viaduct and 15 stations. It is estimated to cost ₹1,286 crore. Stations are proposed at Millennium Centre—through an interchange with the DMRC network, Sector 46, Cyber Park in Sector 46, Sector 47, Subhash Chowk, Sector 48, Sector 33, Hero Honda Chowk, Udyog Vihar Phase 6, Sector 10, Sector 37, Basai, Sector 9 and Sector 101, which will be connected the main through a spur.
The contractor, besides conducting surveys, constructing viaducts and stations, and other civil works, will also set up a control room with round-the-clock radio communication or telephone switchboard links with all safety offices, works sites, site offices, batching plants, casting yards, workshops and all locations, according to the tender document issued on March 8.
Another senior GMRL official said they have already started a ground-penetrating radar survey at the 27 station sites to identify utilities and structures below the ground for easy shifting. 'The contractor has also started the ERT survey to check the water level and character of soil under the stations and along the alignment,' the official said.
GMRL also decided in principle to construct a GMDA-funded underpass at Bakhtawar Chowk and five grade separators along the Metro alignment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the ₹5,452-crore Metro project on February 16, 2024. The total project is expected to cover 28.5 kilometres, and have 27 elevated stations.

Bhubaneswar: Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved two major semiconductor manufacturing units worth Rs 4,009 crore for Odisha. The two projects, to be set up in Bhubaneswar's Info Valley, will generate thousands of high-skilled jobs, catalyse electronics manufacturing and help place Odisha on the global semiconductor map, sources said. The two manufacturing units will be built by SiCSem and 3D Glass. Given the growing demand for semiconductors in telecom, automotive, data centres, consumer electronics and industrial electronics, the newly approved projects will significantly contribute to creating an ' Atmanirbhar Bharat ', official sources said. SiCSem Pvt Ltd, in collaboration with UK-based Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd, will set up India's first commercial compound semiconductor fabrication facility here. The plant will manufacture silicon carbide (SiC) devices, known for their efficiency in high-power applications, with an annual capacity of 60,000 wafers and 96 million packaged units. The SiC devices will have applications across critical sectors, including missiles, defence equipment, electric vehicles (EVs), railway, fast chargers, data centre racks, consumer appliances and solar power inverters. The facility is expected to give India a strategic edge in producing next-generation power electronics domestically. The second project, by US-headquartered 3D Glass Solutions Inc (3DGS), will introduce the world's most advanced semiconductor packaging technology. The unit will manufacture glass interposers, silicon bridges and 3D heterogeneous integration (3DHI) modules. The component are crucial for miniaturisation, high performance and energy efficiency in electronics. With a planned capacity of about 69,600 glass panel substrates, 50 million assembled units, and 13,200 3DHI modules annually, the facility will cater to applications in defence, high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, RF and automotive electronics, photonics and co-packaged optics. Officials said the two projects will not only bring cutting-edge technology to Odisha but also create a ripple effect in the state's electronics ecosystem, encouraging ancillary industries and boosting technical skill development. Apart from two Odisha projects, the Cabinet also approved one project each for Punjab and Andhra Pradesh under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan hailed the Cabinet's decision to set up the two units in Odisha. He said the decision is a pivotal moment for the state, emphasising its potential to create jobs and generate substantial revenue. "Won't Compromise, Will Find New Markets": Shivraj Chouhan Slams US Tariffs
New Delhi: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his determination to protect the interests of farmers despite tariff pressure and said it has been decided that there will be no compromise with the interests of the farming. Speaking at an event in Subrahmanyam Hall in New Delhi, Mr Chouhan emphasised that India's population is its strength and the country will also find new markets. In a veiled reference to the United States imposing 50 per cent tariff on India and apparent pressure in trade talks for greater access to India's agriculture and dairy sectors, Mr Chouhan said there is vast difference in the size of landholdings and agricultural practices and cost of production in the two countries. "The whole country was apprehensive, know how much land they hold: 10,000 hectares, 15,000 hectares. Meanwhile, our farmers have land ranging from one acre to three acres, with many having just half an acre. We have a little land. Is this competition fair? You use GM seeds. There are different kinds of perceptions about our GM. The whole country was apprehensive, what will happen? They want their soybean to come here, their wheat, maize, rice," the Agriculture Minister said. "The cost of production per hectare is less there because GM seeds and other things are used, so the yield is more and the cost is less. The cost of production per hectare here is much higher than there, and if it had come openly, the prices of the crops here would have fallen further in our country. Where would the farmer go? Therefore, it was decided that no matter what happens, there will be no compromise with the interests of the farmer," he added. Farmer groups hail PM Modi's bold stand against US trade tariffs
NEW DELHI: Representatives of several farmer organisations from across the country on Tuesday expressed their gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his bold decision to not compromise with farmers' interests during trade talks despite pressure from the US. The farmer leaders, who attended a meeting with Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, extended their support to the Central govt. Chouhan asked them "not to worry" about the current "testing times" due to higher US tariffs, saying the huge agricultural sector will explore new geographies for exporting its produce. The farmer representatives specifically referred to Modi's remarks, made while addressing the M S Swaminathan Centenary International Conference last week, that he won't compromise with farmers' interests and was even ready to pay a heavy personal price to protect them. Modi's remarks came hours after US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff burden on Indian goods. Though both the countries had been discussing bilateral trade issues for the last few months, they got stuck over US' demand for greater access to India's agriculture and dairy market. "PM Modi has made an unwavering statement in the interests of farmers, livestock rearers, and fishermen... The announcement not only brings relief to millions of food providers but also strengthens the self-reliance of agriculture and rural India," said Dharmendra Choudhary, national president of the Indian Farmer Chaudhary Charan Singh Organisation.
