Mizoram begins recruitment for Mizo Territorial Army battalion to combat drug trafficking

Guwahati: The Mizoram government has started recruiting for a Mizo Territorial Army (MTA) battalion to address drug trafficking and other law and order issues. A Mizoram Home Department official said that 70 male candidates will be recruited for the first batch, with more batches to follow. Successful candidates will undergo nine months of rigorous training at the Assam Regimental Centre in Shillong before being posted in different parts of Mizoram, particularly in border areas. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, during an earlier visit to New Delhi, discussed the MTA's formation and other matters with Home Minister Amit Shah. 'The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to the Home Minister for supporting his proposal to establish the MTA battalion, describing it as a crucial initiative to employ Mizo youths while contributing to national security,' the official said. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has also proposed setting up a zonal office in Mizoram. NCB Director General Anurag Garg recently met the Chief Minister, suggesting the creation of a full-fledged office in the state and stressing the need for more personnel who understand the local language and the ground realities.

Dog squads, raids: Bengaluru cops intensify action on drug menace

BENGALURU: The city police have intensified their crackdown on drug abusers. Earlier, they had limited the number of cases booked for drug abuse but are now registering more cases as part of efforts to curb the menace. Vigilance has been stepped up at courier centres, and dog squads are being deployed to detect drugs. A senior police officer said that about a year ago, the city police had stopped booking cases against drug users, focusing instead on gathering information about peddlers. This approach treated abusers as victims rather than offenders. However, users with previous criminal records continued to be booked. The officer noted that drug abusers are booked under Section 27B of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which carries a fine of ₹10,000 or imprisonment of up to six months. Speaking to TNIE, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime-2) Raja Imam Kasim P said that operations against drug abusers have been intensified. Raids are being conducted at courier offices, and luggage from interstate buses is being checked with the help of dog squads. Synthetic drugs, he pointed out, are difficult to detect as they are odourless and tasteless. Kasim added that the police recently met officials from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Customs to coordinate efforts. Police are also tracking foreign nationals suspected of involvement in peddling. Another officer said that most drugs are sourced from Delhi and transported to Bengaluru through various channels. Recently, the West Division police, along with sniffer dog squads, inspected vehicles and bus stands, including interstate buses, to curb drug smuggling.

Odisha government directs HEIs to establish Shaktishree Empowerment Cells

BHUBANESWAR: Colleges and universities under the Higher Education department have been asked to establish Shaktishree Empowerment Cells by August 25. It is part of the Shaktishree initiative announced by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi last month to ensure safety of women in public higher education institutions. In a letter to all the vice-chancellors and college principals on Saturday, director of higher education Kaliprasanna Mahapatra said the Shaktishree Empowerment Cells will be established as a permanent, round-the-year body in all colleges and universities across the state. The student-led cell will promote security, empowerment and safe environment on campuses for female students and staff. It will comprise a Shaktishree Sanjojika (female faculty member), Shaktishree Saathi (peer leader among girl students), and female class representatives from both UG and PG classes. A calendar of activities will be prepared for the cells which will include addressing issues related to gender-based violence. These cells will conduct a six-day training programme on self-defence, legal rights, and mental health. Apart from constituting the cells, the institutions have been asked to select Shaktishree Saathis after constituting screening committees for the purpose. The Saathis will coordinate with the Shaktishree Sanjojika to conduct training sessions and workshops on campus safety, selfdefence, among other things. The Shaktishree initiative not only aims to prevent atrocities but also empowers female students through self-defence training, legal awareness, and mental health support. It is designed to create a robust safety framework across 16 universities and 730 government and aided colleges under the Higher Education department. As a part of the initiative, a dedicated app will also be developed to provide access to internal complaints committees (ICCs), facilitate anonymous complaint registration via text, audio, or video, mental health support through Tele-MANAS, and an SOS button for immediate assistance. The app will also connect students to local committees for unresolved issues.
