Mizoram begins recruitment for Mizo Territorial Army battalion to combat drug trafficking
A Mizoram Home Department official said that 70 male candidates will be recruited for the first batch, with more batches to follow. Successful candidates will undergo nine months of rigorous training at the Assam Regimental Centre in Shillong before being posted in different parts of Mizoram, particularly in border areas.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, during an earlier visit to New Delhi, discussed the MTA's formation and other matters with Home Minister Amit Shah.
'The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to the Home Minister for supporting his proposal to establish the MTA battalion, describing it as a crucial initiative to employ Mizo youths while contributing to national security,' the official said.
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has also proposed setting up a zonal office in Mizoram. NCB Director General Anurag Garg recently met the Chief Minister, suggesting the creation of a full-fledged office in the state and stressing the need for more personnel who understand the local language and the ground realities.

The annual pilgrimage this year was held months after three Pakistani terrorists affiliated to the Lashker-e-Taiba brutally gunned down 26 innocent men, including 25 tourists, in Pahalgam in front of their horror-struck families. The attack led India to launch Operation Sindoor, during which its armed forces destroyed key terrorist bases in Pakistan and hit its military assets.

Mizoram's Peace City project draws 18 bidders
1 2 3 4 Aizawl: Eighteen leading companies, including multinational giants, have entered the competitive bidding process to design the master plan for the ambitious Peace City project proposed for Thenzawl town in Serchhip district. The project aims to create a modern, sustainable urban space for around 10 lakh residents. During a review meeting on Monday, chaired by CM Lalduhoma, urban development & poverty alleviation secretary Lalmalsawma Pachuau said the Request for Proposal was issued on July 22. The consultant selection is expected by early Sept, with work commencing in Oct and major planning phases concluding within the current financial year. The Peace City initiative, backed by a Rs 10 crore allocation from the ministry of housing & urban affairs (MoHUA), has ignited political controversy. Opposition parties, led by the Mizo National Front (MNF), accuse the CM of harbouring a hidden agenda to relocate the state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl, his constituency. MNF leader and former CM Zoramthanga likened Lalduhoma's actions to those of medieval ruler Muhammad bin Tughlaq, notorious for his erratic capital relocation. In response, the urban development & poverty alleviation department clarified that there are no plans to move the capital, attributing the confusion to a miscommunication from the Centre. However, the yatra was affected by heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, which rendered the roads unsafe. Authorities announced that the yatra would be suspended from August 3 due to the need for track maintenance along both the Baltal and Pahalgam axes of the route.
