#Showbiz: Last member of K-pop megaband BTS to finish military service

SEOUL: SUGA, a member of the K-pop megaband BTS, will officially complete his mandatory military service on Saturday, marking the full return of all seven members of the global supergroup from duty.
South Korea's most lucrative musical act has been on a self-described "hiatus" since 2022 as its members undertook the mandatory service required of all South Korean men under 30 due to tensions with the nuclear-armed North.
SUGA will be the last to complete his service, ahead of the group's widely anticipated return to activities as a full unit.
His final day concludes at 11:59:59 pm, according to the band's agency HYBE and South Korea's Military Manpower Administration.
The rapper, who served as a social service agent – an alternative form of military duty – effectively completed his service on Wednesday after using up his remaining leave, according to his label.
"Above all else, I wanted to... sincerely thank our fans who waited for me all this time," SUGA told the group's fans – collectively known as ARMY – on the platform Weverse.
"I've missed you so much."
Before entering military service, the megaband generated more than 5.5 trillion won (US$4 billion) in yearly economic impact, according to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute.
Analysts expect HYBE's operating profit to jump next year, driven in part by BTS's anticipated return to large-scale touring, with some projections forecasting a 71 per cent year-on-year increase.
"The importance of BTS's reunion to HYBE, K-pop and South Korea at large cannot be overstated. They are singular in their part of the Korean Wave," Grace Kao, a sociology professor at Yale University, told AFP.
"I think their next tour will be their biggest yet."
Since their release last week, band leader RM has appeared at Art Basel in Switzerland as the new global ambassador for Samsung's Art TV, while member V was spotted attending a piano recital in Seoul alongside "Old Boy" filmmaker Park Chan-wook.
BTS has long been considered one of the best examples of South Korea's soft power reach, even making a White House visit in 2022.
They have spoken candidly about mental health and anti-Asian crime and donated US$1 million to the Black Lives Matter movement in 2019, inspiring fans to contribute the same amount.
K-pop's surging popularity has also helped break down barriers for Asian artists, said Keung Yoon Bae, a Korean studies professor at Georgia Institute of Technology.
"Singers such as Eric Nam, born and raised in Atlanta, have discussed before how they had to go to Korea because they felt that attaining a music career in the US as an Asian felt impossible," she said.
"Today, groups such as BTS and Blackpink seem to be breaking down that sense of impossibility."
Despite the widespread acclaim, SUGA was fined 15 million won (US$10,933) for driving an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol last year.
On Saturday, he once again apologised for the incident in a message posted on Weverse.
"I'm sorry for the disappointment and concern I caused due to what happened last year. More than anything, knowing I caused pain to my fans broke my heart," he said.

Billy Joel closing beloved New York motorcycle shop after brain disorder diagnosis

Billy Joel's beloved Long Island motorcycle shop is closing down after nearly 15 years of offering fans a free peek at his personal collection of dozens of bikes. The music icon will be shuttering 20th Century Cycles in Oyster Bay, New York, in late September and auctioning off his collection later this year because of a brain disorder he has been diagnosed with, according to a spokesperson, Claire Mercuri. In May, Joel announced that he was cancelling upcoming concerts after learning he has Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, a fluid buildup in his brain that can affect thinking, concentrating, memory, movement and more, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The 76-year-old singer, composer and pianist was having trouble with his balance but otherwise felt good, he said in an interview last month on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast. Joel, who grew up in nearby Hicksville, opened 20th Century Cycles in late 2010 as a place to maintain and repair his motorcycles, restore and customise ones he bought and showcase his collection for the public at no charge. "It's basically promoting an aesthetic here," he said in a 2013 YouTube video filmed at the shop. "I like older style. I like the automotive style from the '30s to the '60s. I wanted to collect a whole bunch of those kinds of bikes, put 'em in one place and let people see what that era of bike looked like. Because it's starting to be a lost aesthetic.' He said he also wanted to bring foot traffic and business to downtown Oyster Bay - a ritzy waterfront community about 25 miles (40km ) east of midtown Manhattan - where part of the street that includes 20th Century Cycles was renamed Billy Joel Way in 2023. "I've been living in this community for a long time,' he said in the video. "I actually grew up not far from here. And I'd like to get a little interest going into the town and the village.' Joel's nearby home in Centre Island is listed for US$29.9mil, and he has been living in South Florida, while keeping a home in Sag Harbor on Long Island. The shop became a popular stop for motorcycle enthusiasts and tourists. It was home to Joel's collection of more than 75 bikes, dating back all the way to the 1940s and including Harley-Davidsons, Triumphs, Ducatis, Moto Guzzis, Indians and BMWs. One of the most valuable, he said, was a 1952 Vincent Rapide, which can sell for tens of thousands of dollars and sometimes more, according to auction sites. "I think everybody in Oyster Bay would agree that it's a big loss," said Ted Bahr, who owns a vintage rock poster gallery next to 20th Century Cycles. "Billy's place is visited on weekends by dozens and dozens of people, typically on motorcycles but also people in cars,. People come up and look at the window all the time. I mean it's a real destination. Billy Joel is a real superstar, and he is a hometown boy, so it's really unfortunate." The motorcycles that were in the shop have already been moved out. But it has been open on recent weekends selling new, used and vintage motorcycle parts that were still in stock there. Joel's enthusiasm for motorcycles dates back decades. In 1982, he was riding a motorcycle on Long Island when he was struck by a car that ran a red light, injuring his left thumb and dislocating his right wrist. He spent about a month in the hospital. He has also ridden motorcycles in various benefits for 9/11 first responders, breast cancer and other causes over the years. A date for the auction of his collection has not been set. – AP

(Video) G-Dragon Surprised Fans With Daisy Flowers On 37th Birthday

On 18th August 2025 (Monday), fans across the globe celebrate the 37th birthday of Korean superstar G-Dragon (지드래곤). While in most cases, the fans are the ones giving the gifts, the singer was the one who was more generous on his special day. In commemoration of his birthday, G-Dragon reportedly prepared two birthday events for his fans. Last week, the star had prepaid for 14 cafes across South Korea to offer 188 free drinks each throughout his birthday week, totalling 2,632 drinks. Later on his birthday, his fan club shared about a special 'Pink Spaceman' event that will take place around Hongdae and Hangang. For the event, a mysterious man dressed in a pink spacesuit walked around the two areas, handing out daisies for those who knew the special 'code name'. Daisies are flowers closely associated with G-Dragon and are even the motif for his lightstick. As such, fans in the area made time to find the pink spaceman to grab a daisy for themselves. However, upon meeting the spaceman, many were convinced that the man in the suit was G-Dragon. One fan explained, 'I think the Pink (Space)Man is GD. 1. His height is similar (to GD), 2. His dance moves stood out, 3. When I called 'Jiyong', he looked back automatically.' Unfortunately, the suit's helmet did too good a job at concealing the man's identity, and G-Dragon also never clarified the rumours. Nevertheless, fans are praising the BIGBANG (빅뱅) leader for preparing the event, even walking around in the suit to celebrate his birthday with fans. Besides the two events, G-Dragon was also featured in two new projects on his birthday. The rapper was featured in Vince's (빈스) new song, 'CHA CHA CHA (차차차)', and a video on comedian Yoo Byung Jae's (유병재) YouTube channel. At the same time, BIGBANG is also celebrating their 19th anniversary today (19th August 2025), with fans from all over the world chiming in with congratulatory messages for the K-pop group. Even on his birthday, G-Dragon can't hide his generosity and love for fans. We can't wait to see what the star has in store for fans in the future. In the meantime, check out his featuring on 'CHA CHA CHA' and his appearance on Yoo Byung Jae's YouTube video: Sources: Twitter (1)(2)(3)(4)

McDonald's Teases BTS TinyTan & Happy Meal Collaboration

A few years ago, McDonald's launched their collaboration with K-pop group BTS (방탄소년단), sparking a worldwide frenzy. Recently, the fast food giant teased that they're collaborating with the global sensations once again. Earlier this year, the official McDonald's Twitter account posted a vague tweet that read, 'idk about u, but I miss my K-pop era a Tiny bit too much'. While the account is no stranger to posting quirky tweets and memes, this particular post piqued the interest of many ARMYs (BTS fans). Many believed that the tweet was a hint that the company is launching a new collaboration with the K-pop group. To recap, in 2021, BTS and McDonald's launched a collaboration meal, dubbed the BTS Meal. The collaboration menu featured 10 pieces of chicken nuggets, a large fries, a large drink and two dipping sauces in sweet chilli and cajun flavours. More importantly, the meal also included an exclusive, limited-edition purple McDonald's packaging with the BTS logo. The collaboration was launched worldwide, including Malaysia. The collaboration was an instant success and helped introduce McDonald's second K-pop meal featuring NewJeans. Since then, ARMYs have hoped for another large-scale partnership between BTS and the fast food giant. After sharing the cryptic tweet, McDonald's shared another teaser, this time clearly highlighting a collaboration with TinyTan, the animated character franchise based on BTS. According to news reports, McDonald's will launch a new set of toys for Happy Meal featuring the TinyTan characters. The launch is said to be on 2nd September 2025 (Tuesday), but this detail hasn't been confirmed yet. Additionally, there is no news on whether the collaboration will be a US-exclusive or a global release. Nevertheless, ARMYs are excited about the new meal, saying they're already prepared to get a Happy Meal for themselves. From the looks of it, it does seem that this new Happy Meal collaboration will be another instant hit. Are you looking forward to this new BTS meal? Sources: Twitter, Instagram
