Fleadh hitchhikers score a lift with GAA legend

Two Fleadh-bound pals got more than just a lift when they stuck out their thumbs on a busy roadside – they hitched a ride with none other than seven-time All-Ireland winner and GAA legend, Eoghan O'Gara. Brandon Cassidy and a friend were stranded in Curracloe as taxi demand skyrocketed during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2025. Left with no other option, they decided to hitch a lift into Wexford Town. Having swapped the blue of Dublin for the black and amber of Wexford, O'Gara now lines out for Shelmaliers – helping the club to county glory in 2023. He lives locally with his family. Meanwhile, Fleadh Cheoil 2025 is lighting up Wexford this week with music, crowds, and even a surprise performance by Ed Sheeran, who dropped by for a few impromptu sets – a nod to his strong Wexford roots.

Fleadh hitchhikers unexpectedly nab lift with seven-time All-Ireland winner

A couple of hitchhikers were left pleasantly surprised when they managed to nab a lift with seven-time All-Ireland champion Eoghan O'Gara en route to the Fleadh in Wexford. Brandon Cassidy and his pal were stuck for a lift into Wexford Town from Curracloe due to the high demand for taxis. With Fleadh Cheoil 2025 taking place, they reverted to thumbing a lift roadside. Fortunately for the pair, they not only grabbed a lift but also shared the car with GAA legend Eoghan O'Gara. "No taxis to be got in Wexford, thumbing a lift from Curracloe to Wexford town for the fleadh. Brandon wrote on social media. O'Gara was part of the great Dublin team of the 2010s and won seven All-Ireland titles, from 2011 to his retirement in 2019, when Dublin completed the historic five-in-a-row and was ever-present in the Dublin panel at that time. He was the first substitute used in their 2011 All-Ireland win and also started in the 2017 final, a classic against Mayo. A regular feature for club Templeogue Synge Street, O'Gara transferred to Wexford club Shelmaliers and ended up winning a county title in 2023. He now lives in the county with his family. Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2025 takes place in Wexford between August 3rd and August 10th, and thousands are expected to flock to Wexford for the festivities. Pop sensation Ed Sheeran unexpectedly turned up at the festival, where he performed several sets. He has strong Wexford roots.

One boy's incredible journey from Ukraine to playing at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann

Like thousands of other Ukrainian children, Tim had been forced to flee his homeland as war shattered the rhythm of normal life. Now, just three years later, Tim is preparing to take the stage at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil, the country's most prestigious traditional music competition—an unlikely chapter in a story showing the power and warmth of Irish culture. Settling in Wexford after a long journey from Ukraine, Tim quickly found himself drawn to the vibrant local music scene. Though classically trained on the piano accordion back home, he had never encountered anything like the fast-paced reels and beautiful airs that flowed from local music sessions and school assemblies. Tim's parents made the decision to purchase a piano accordion locally for him to pursue his musical interests. Thanks to a local music school, Wexford Trad Hub – Carraig Bán and the music teachers there who spotted his talent, Tim was introduced to the the Irish style of playing piano accordion. Soon, he was attending weekly sessions at the local Carraig Bán Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann branch, where fellow young musicians welcomed him with open arms. 'When I first started playing Irish music I had difficulty understanding the rhythms' Tim says. 'Ukrainian music is very different from Irish, I was afraid that I would fail and I was afraid to let the group down. I had to rehearse a lot. Now, when I am surrounded by people who help and support me, I am not so afraid to perform. I continue to practice. I really enjoy playing in the group.' 'He was so interested,' says Eve Maloney, Chairperson of the music school. 'He picked up ornamentation, music techniques, and the Irish tunes very fast. The children were all in awe of the musical pieces he learnt in Ukraine that he would often share with them. Everyone in Wexford Trad Hub admires Tim's willingness to immerse himself in Irish culture and it was wonderful to see how quickly he gelled with everyone and to watch such great friendships through music develop.' While still in touch with Ukrainian music traditions, Tim has found a second home in Irish music. He now performs regularly with a group of local children from Wexford Trad Hub and even shares his own impressive tunes from home with his friends. This year's All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil will be held in Wexford Town —a town steeped in musical and historical heritage. Tim will be competing in the under-12 piano accordion category, representing both his adopted county and, in a way, the spirit of cultural resilience. 'The competition was a great achievement for me' Tim explains. 'I have also become more confident and regularly expand my repertoire.' His mother, Olena, often watches his rehearsals with quiet pride. 'Tim has been studying music at a music school in Ukraine online. Just him, a teacher, and a video camera. The war made its own adjustments to our lives.' Tim's parents began looking for an instrument and a group that he could play with locally. 'There were big difficulties with the language and then with understanding Irish music. A new group. New people. I was worried about him, but I was sure that he could handle it!' Tim has immersed himself in the Irish music scene and loves playing with all the children he has made great friendships with. 'It is difficult for him,' Olena goes on to say, 'but he is happy when he sees his achievements! We are very grateful to everyone who takes part in Tim's life.' Win or lose at the Fleadh, Tim's journey is already an amazing achievement —and a testament to how, in the right hands, music can build not just bridges, but entire new beginnings. Tim is scheduled to perform on August 9 in the Under-12 piano accordion competition and will be performing on the gig rig with Wexford Trad Hub this Thursday evening at 7.20pm.
