Anne Burrell's friends ‘can't believe' she meant to end her life: ‘She was always smiling'

New York Post5 days ago
Close friends of late chef and Food Network star Anne Burrell are in shock and disbelief that the charismatic gourmand ended her life.
The 'Worst Cooks In America' star's death was ruled a suicide due to acute intoxication from a combination of drugs according to the New York City medical examiner's office.
Sources close to the 55-year-old chef and cookbook author, survived by husband Stuart Claxton, say she was in great spirits just hours earlier.

'She looked like she was having the time of her life at Improv,' a source close to Burrell told The Post, trying to make sense of her sudden passing.
'Who knows what happened after that. It's all sort of puzzling. She lived life. She was not a downer – she lived. For her, everyday was a party in Anne's world. She lived every day. Everyone was shocked. There was no one that was like, 'the last time I saw Anne she was in the gutter.'

And friends acknowledge the spiky haired chef partied hard, but feel she may have made a spur-of the moment decision while inebriated which she'd never make otherwise, leading to tragedy.
'For it to be the night of the performance [doesn't make sense]. She nailed it. She was on Cloud 9. She couldn't wait for it. It was such a moment,' the source added.
Burrell was found unresponsive in her Brooklyn home on June, 17, with diphenhydramine (commonly sold as Benadryl) ethanol (alcohol), cetirizine (allergy medicine) and amphetamine in her system.
It is not clear if Burrell had a prescription for an amphetamine-based medication, or she had taken a street drug containing the stimulant.

She was 'discovered in the shower unconscious and unresponsive surrounded by approximately (100) assorted pills,' according to a police report cited by the New York Times.
Weeks before her death, Burrell appeared to be relishing the excitement of her new project, sharing a selfie with a group of her improvised comedy friends and another selfie inside an improv studio in Brooklyn, teasing her June 16 show.
'Soooooo… as I have mentioned I have been taking Improv classes @thesecondcitytc and having an ABSOLUTE blast!!!' she wrote.

'She was having so much fun with this group of new friends. Anne just loved making friends. She put herself out there. Everywhere she goes, she'd make friends. She loved the party, she loved being around people, she loved entertaining,' the first source said.
Phil Casaceli, Burrell's former business partner at Phil and Anne's Good Time Lounge, the restaurant the pair ran together from May, 2017 to April, 2018 in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn told The Post he was also shaken by the news.
'I was like, 'No way. I don't believe it.' It doesn't all make sense. She goes out, she has a great night. I don't believe it,' Casaceli said.
'That [the drugs] with alcohol – to me it just seems like an accidental thing. To me, it just doesn't add up. She was always smiling.'

The network also included a Public Service Announcement for a crisis line for those suffering and in need of help.
A third source close to Burrell told The Post they wondered if the chef's tragic decision could have been made on an impulse.

'Maybe she never thought about it [suicide] before, and decided to take all the pills in the cabinet [that night].
I knew Anne, she partied. Maybe if she made it through the night, and got her stomach pumped [she would have been okay],' the third source said.
A fourth source, a friend of Burrell's, previously told Page Six: 'I know she kind of struggled — once she was on TV and was on her way to be a TV celebrity chef,' the friend told Page Six shortly after the chef's passing.

'She was famous, she was doing the food and wine circuit stuff. She was busy — I kind of felt like she wasn't totally happy,' the friend added to Page Six. 'People with big personalities sometimes mask things.'

‘Weapons' was the big gun at the box office, raking in $18.2M on its opening day

The theaters were definitely locked and loaded. 'Weapons' blasted to No.1 on Friday as its opener pulled in $18.2 million, according to The Numbers. The flick, which The Post praised as 'the best horror movie of the summer' could be enjoying an over $30 million opening weekend. Its star, Josh Brolin, who plays the father of one of 17 children who run away on the same night, told Collider why the film stands out amongst others in the genre. 'Right now, with so much content, you're just watching things on whatever streaming service you're on, and you're just going, 'F–k, why is this so boring, man? Why?' And just go to the next thing. 'It's all the same s–t.' 3 Julia Garner stars in the mystery horror 'Weapons.' ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection 'Freakier Friday,' which The Post called 'a decent comeback movie' for its star Lindsay Lohan, landed in second place with sales of $12.7 million. The long-awaited sequel to 2003's 'Freaky Friday' — which has Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role — could be looking at an up to $32 million opening weekend haul. Curtis explained to USA Today why the sequel took more than two decades. 3 Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reprise their roles in 'Freakier Friday,' a sequel to the 2003 original. ©Walt Disney Co./Courtesy Everett Collection 'There was no possible way we could have done a sequel to 'Freaky Friday' until Lindsay was old enough chronologically to be the mother of a 15-year-old,' she told the outlet. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' flew down two notches to third place, earning $4.5 million on its third Friday in theaters. The superhero film, distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, saw a 66% drop during its second week at the box office and Disney CEO Bob Iger addressed the elephant in the room during a recent Q&A with analysts. 'Even though, for instance, there have been 'Fantastic Four' movies before, we kind of consider the one that we did an original property in many respects because we're introducing those characters to people who are not familiar with them at all,' he said. 3 Pedro Pascal plays Mister Fantastic in 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps.' ©Walt Disney Co./Courtesy Everett Collection In fourth was the family animated comedy 'The Bad Guys 2,' down two spots from last Friday, with a $3.07 million take. In less than a week in theaters, the Pixar film earned $50 million globally, surpassing the entire box office earnings of the animation company's 2021 movie 'Luca,' according to Collider. 'The Naked Gun' fell two places to fifth, with $2.37 million in sales. The legacy sequel, which was released last Friday, is star Liam Neeson's highest-grossing movie of the decade.

Howard Stern staffers prepping for show's demise, withholding best material as future uncertain

The writing has 'been on the wall for well over a year now' that SiriusXM wouldn't be renewing Howard Stern's colossal contract — and his employees have been taking advantage, 'coasting' on the clock and trolling for new gigs, two current show staffers told The Post. This week, reports surfaced that the 'Howard Stern Show's' '19-year run at SiriusXM was nearing its end, with his $500 million contract expiring at the end of the year and an audience that's apparently dwindled from 20 million a day to 125,000. Some of the show's writers have been their best jokes for themselves, to use after the show's eventual demise, one worker said. Advertisement Staffers said they're certain the show's ending this winter, whether by Howard's choice or SiriusXM's. GC Images 'Most of us have been coasting at work the last year,' because 'we know he's retiring, whether by choice or because he's forced out,' admitted one of the longtime staffers who dished to The Post this week. Stern's employees have been putting out feelers for other showbiz gigs, the two said. Advertisement 'It's been hard, because the industry [in New York City] is so incestuous, so you don't know who's talking to who,' the first employee said. 'I'm just hanging in there until this is all sorted out, and then I will take some time to unwind after all this,' the staffer continued. 'I'm a fan and it's been a big part of my life for so long, but it hasn't been fun for a while.' Before taking his annual summer break, Stern, 71, hinted in staff meetings his retirement is nigh. The staffers said they've only heard rumors regarding Stern's future at SiriusXM — nothing definitive from management or the self-proclaimed 'King of All Media' himself. The looming end of the once mighty radio personality comes after a sharp change in Stern's politics. Advertisement The radio host used to maintain a friendship with President Trump, but came out against him when he ran against Hillary Clinton in 2015. Once a strong supporter of Republicans like former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Governor George Pataki, Stern has been accused of going woke and was an infamously ardent backer of President Biden and Kamala Harris. Stern's audience has gotten smaller since his 'woke' turn in the late 2010s. GC Images 'I don't know if its wokeness that alienated some of his audience, or if he just got tamer with age, but whatever it is, its apparent no one wants to hear it anymore,' the second staffer offered. Advertisement The political U-turn was done to appease the Hollywood elite, the employee said. 'I think he's content to be out in there in the Hamptons with his celebrity friends,' the first staffer offered. 'He likes being liked by famous people. That seems more important [to him] than his legacy.' Some ribbed Stern, calling him 'Hollywood Howie' after he started hanging around with the likes of Jimmy Kimmel, Jennifer Aniston, Jerry Seinfeld, and John Stamos during the late 2000s and early to mid 2010s. But since COVID Stern's become 'a hermit,' the second staffer said. 'Everyone knows he hasn't been the same since COVID. He does the show from his [Southampton] basement. And it's been sad to see how irrelevant he's become,' the employee added. Stern has also suffered immense loss in recent years, with the deaths of his father, Ben, in 2022, his best friend and stylist, Ralph Cirella, in 2023, and then his agent, Don Buchwald, in 2024. Fans have complained for years about the show's dwindling quality, and Stern's kids-gloves approach with certain guests he once would've skewered. Advertisement 'His passion hasn't been there, and that can be infectious,' the first staffer said. 'When your boss doesn't even seem like he wants to be there, its like, why should I bust my ass?' Stern and SiriusXM did not return requests for comment.

Planet Hollywood welcomes nineties A-list investor to new venue

He said 'I'll be back' — and meant it. Arnold Schwarzenegger has stayed true to his 'Terminator' mantra — and has already hit Midtown's new Planet Hollywood, a venture he invested in when it launched in the early nineties. 'Arnold the Governator was in New York, just around the time that we opened earlier this year because he was filming a Santa Claus movie and he came to the opening. Then he threw his wrap party for the movie there and started hanging out again,' Planet Hollywood's CEO and founder, Robert Earl, told The Post. Advertisement The world-renowned eatery, which reopened at 136 West 42nd Street in Midtown in February, originally launched in 1991 on West 57th Street. Back then, it had the backing of Hollywood elite, namely Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore. Now, Earl also finds it surreal to be welcoming his former investors' offspring, who are now grown up and making their own way in the industry — like Patrick, the son of Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver. 4 Arnold Schwarzenegger and his son Patrick have already visited the new Planet Hollywood in Midtown. Bruce Glikas Advertisement 'Patrick, who used to just be a little young man coming with his family. Now he came by himself. And he's an amazing young man. Celebrity doesn't get to him. Like, I tried to force him to take a car from me to get back to his hotel, and he insisted he was going on the subway by himself,' Earl gushed of Patrick, who starred in Season 3 of 'The White Lotus' this February. The British restaurateur has also been keeping up with the children of Willis and Moore. 'I've even been chatting with Tallulah Willis. We asked her if she wants to have a look at doing a few things with us. She's an artist now and has got some exhibits and maybe we'll do them inside the New York restaurant,' he said. 4 The world-renowned eatery originally launched on West 57th Street, with the backing of Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore. But I do plan on hitting them up,' he said. Planet Hollywood is now going 'Back to the Future' with new lunch specials — serving the same items that were on its original nineties menu and at the same price point. 4 Planet Hollywood in Midtown is now serving items — like the Hollywood club and margherita pasta — from their 1991 menu at their original prices. Planet Hollywood Advertisement 'I think that there is a trend. I've seen a few other people now doing this. And I think that it brings you through the door,' Earl said of the retro pricing. 'And of course, it's fascinating for people to say, 'Just a minute, my entree is under $10. You mean the turkey burger with the fries and everything else is only $7.95?' Which is unheard of in Manhattan, in a sit-down restaurant that cost $20 million to build.' 4 Founder and CEO Robert Earl reopened Planet Hollywood, which closed its Times Square location during COVID, at 136 West 42nd Street in February. Michael Nagle The vintage menu — which includes items like margherita pasta for $9.95 and a Hollywood club for $8.95 — will last until October 22nd, when the restaurant celebrates its 34th anniversary. There's also a vodka-rum-gin cocktail called 'Hasta La Vista Baby' for $9.91, paying homage to Schwarzenegger's famous line from 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day.'
