The 'horrific' experience that almost derailed Bake Off legend Prue Leith's entire TV career - before major showbiz U-turn
Prue Leith is one of the foremost celebrity chefs currently on our screens.
The Cordon Bleu-trained cook, 85, started out in catering, before opening a Michelin-starred restaurant in Notting Hill and a school for budding chefs.
She is also a prolific cookbook writer, columnist and author, publishing cookbooks, novels - and her 2013 tell-all memoir Relish.
All this while sustaining a near 60-year TV career, judging BBC 's Great British Menu, and, more famously, The Great British Bake Off, replacing Mary Berry when the show moved to Channel 4 in 2017.
But despite her now huge success, one major moment at the start of her career meant it all nearly did not happen.
From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop.
Her first foray into telly came in the seventies, presenting a show for housewives for Tyne Tees Television, the precursor to the ITV franchise for North East England.
But Prue said she had such a 'horrific' experience, it left her close to abandoning a career in TV altogether.
She told Candis Magazine: 'With no previous presenting experience, it would be fair to say I wasn't a natural.
'I was very bad at it and didn't enjoy it at all. I think [the show] died a death.'
The ordeal put her off entirely - and for years after this, she did virtually no TV work.
In fact, despite receiving offers to make further appearances, she turned most of them down in this period.
Instead, the cook chose to feature as a guest on a handful of documentaries in the eighties on topics that interested her.
But everything changed in the early noughties, when her beloved husband, South African author and property developer Rayne Kruger, died in 2002, aged 80.
The tragedy saw her join the panel on Great British Menu, which sees the country's best chefs compete for the chance to cook a course at a prestigious meal - for diners ranging from royals, to ambassadors, to veterans.
Prue adored being part of the programme - and stayed for 11 years, until her departure for Bake Off.
And now, not only do viewers love to watch the baker, along with her iconic funky jewellery, in Britain - she has won the hearts of audiences across the pond too.
As The Great British Bake Off has proved popular with stateside viewers, it got its own American spin-off, The Great American Baking Show, in 2015.
Prue's GBBO colleague Paul Hollywood had simultaneously been a part of the American iteration since 2017 - and she joined him in 2022.
With both the British and American versions of the series to enjoy in the USA, Prue now always gets stopped in the street when visiting the country: 'I get asked if I am that lady from the baking show.'
Her judging schedule is packed to the rafters - and it meant she stepped down from judging the celebrity version of the baking competition this year.
She was replaced by her friend Lady Caroline Waldegrave, the managing director of Leiths School Of Food And Wine - which Prue founded.
The celebrity chef (pictured with fellow judge Paul last month) has previously said it was simply to get a break from back-to-back filming
The celebrity chef has previously said it was simply to get a break from back-to-back filming - aged 85, she wants to travel, have days off and spend time with her husband.
She tied the knot with fashion designer John Playfair, 77, in 2016.
Speaking to journalist Holly Rubenstein on her podcast The Travel Diaries, Prue said: 'I haven't got much longer, I'm 85, I want to spend as much time as I can with him.'
The constant travelling to the US puts a strain on her: '[My agent] doesn't quite say, "She needs a carer", but it's pretty close.'
Praising John, she gushed: 'One of the wonderful things about him is that he is totally without ego, he doesn't feel threatened by the fact that I have a higher profile than he does.
'When I introduce him [to people], he always just says, "I'm the handbag carrier, I'm her chauffeur".'
Last year, Prue and John shared the details of the start of their relationship during a sweet joint appearance on Loose Women.
The chef revealed she bolted from their first meeting at a dinner party at a friend's house.
When she first arrived, there were only two men and two women there, including John, making it obvious it was a double date set-up - which she was put off by.
The TV personality said she made her excuses to leave as quickly as she could, never anticipating what would happen next.
Prue revealed the following day, John turned up on her doorstep - and he admitted during the Loose Women interview he instantly 'knew she was the one'.
The chef quipped: 'I paid him to say that.'
Prue also said her husband is the inspiration behind her eye-catching outfits: 'Colour is influenced by you...
'I ask for John's advice and he always says, "No, it's not enough - bigger earrings or more colour.
'He pushes me further. It's great because most women who hit 50 think they have to wear grey and I think you need colour.'
Prue has also previously spoken out about the 13-year affair she had with her late first husband Rayne.
She revealed their long marriage started as an affair, after she fell for her mother's best friend's husband.
The baker decided to speak out about the experience in her 2013 memoir.
She said on the White Wine Question Time podcast several years ago she had no desire to be 'discreet' about her personal life.
Prue told presenter, journalist Kate Thornton: 'If there are things in your life you're not exactly proud of, but they would be interesting to the reader, you should try to tackle them.
'I thought, "You know, to skip it, when Rayne was the most important person in my life... how could I not tell his whole story?" So I did.'
Prue, born in Cape Town, worked with Rayne while he was married to the late South African actress Nan Munro - Prue's mother's best friend.
'I never asked him to leave his wife because I was very happy,' she explained of their affair.
'I had none of the duties of life and all of the pleasures of somebody who loved me. I wasn't pressing for marriage.
'We did have 13 secret years and nobody ever guessed because we were discreet.
'But it was easier in a way because he was a family friend, chairman of my company, and he had helped me enormously and everyone knew we were great friends.'
Eventually Rayne left his wife, who was 17 years his senior, to start a life and a family with Prue.
They have a daughter, Li-Da Kruger, who they adopted from Cambodia. She is now a filmmaker.
They also share son Danny Kruger, now the Conservative MP for East Wiltshire.

Great British Bake Off's Prue Leith addresses future on show after 'planning to quit'
The Great British Bake Off's Prue Leith has spoken out about her future on the show, after admitting that she threatened to quit the Bake Off universe entirely Dame Prue Leith considered her departure from the Great British Bake Off empire due to its demanding nature but opted to remain in parts of it after a pivotal chat with Love Productions. Alongside The Great British Bake Off are various spin-offs such as the celebrity edition, Junior Bake Off, and the Great American Baking Show, which Prue found intense, prompting thoughts of stepping down entirely at 85-years-old. On the Spooning with Mark Wogan podcast, she spoke about the impact of her non-stop schedule since joining the hit Channel 4 series. She said: "What happened was I thought I've got to have a summer holiday. This is ridiculous, I've been working from April to September without a break for eight years. "At that point it was for seven years. So, I went to the bosses, 'I'm going to quit. I can't do this anymore'. And it hadn't occurred to me to say, 'Can I quit some of it?'. "I just thought I had to do it all which was, at the time, Celebrity Bake Off, Great British Bake Off, Great American Baking Show, which is the same thing, and I had been doing junior bake off." The response was a pleasant surprise to Prue, who acknowledged how amenable the producers were when she broached the subject. She revealed: "And they said 'Why don't you just quit enough to get the summer holiday you want?' And I said 'Can I do that?' and they said 'Yeah, why don't you choose one that you don't want to do?' "On the new schedule I'd like to stay for a while. I want to go before I'm pushed. I don't want some poor executive to be told to tell me." Rumours about her future on the show have circulated before, and Prue has previously addressed them. Earlier this year, there were reports that Prue's friend, Caroline Waldegrave OBE, would replace her on a celebrity version of Bake Off, the Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer. In an interview with the Independent, Prue shared her feelings about the show. She said: "I absolutely love working on Bake Off and am looking forward to filming the next series and meeting our new bakers. "I am only stepping back from the Celebrity series, which is just a question of the filming commitment involved as we make these shows back to back."

RAF pilot's final flight in North Yorkshire after 45 years
An RAF pilot has said he was "quite emotional" after making his final solo flight after a 45-year flying career which saw him amass about 16,000 hours in the Lt Richard "Ricko" Offord, 64, from Richmond, North Yorkshire, first took to the skies for the air force in 1980 and has been based at RAF Leeming since his career, he piloted several different models of fast jet and in 1995 was forced to eject from his Tornado F3 after a mid-air Lt Offord said he was "a bit sad" about his retirement, and was saluted by fire engines upon landing at RAF Leeming and surprised by colleagues, family and friends, but added: "I've had a pretty good innings." After his final flight, Flt Lt Offord, who is RAF Leeming's longest serving fast jet pilot, said: "I started flying fighters in 1982. It's quite a long time, so I'm not too upset."However, he said his time in the sky had not fully come to an end."I'll carry on flying, but I can't do it in military planes," he explained."You can only do it up to age 65, unfortunately, and I'm 65 on Tuesday, so this is it." Asked about any dramatic incidents during his long career, Flt Lt Offord said: "I was once knocked out and woke up on the ground in Lincolnshire."We were doing air combat and I bumped into the other aircraft, so his tail and my wing came off. They don't fly very well without tails or wings."Pondering his lucky escape further, he added: "I didn't fly for a year due to back injuries, but all four of us ejected and everyone walked away, so that's the main thing."Speaking about the surprise welcoming committee and celebrations waiting for him after he landed for the final time in his Hawker Hunter at RAF Leeming, Flt Lt Offord said: "I had a little tear, to be fair.""I had no idea they were going to be here," he said."The whole reception with mates and fire engines, it's made me a bit emotional." Watch the moment Stephen Mulhern is left red-faced as he makes HUGE blunder on Catchphrase puzzle
STEPHEN Mulhern made the ultimate slip-up during the latest episode of Celebrity Catchphrase. The TV host was seen on Saturday in the latest episode of the gameshow favourite, joined by Jeremy Vine, Charlie Hedges and comedian Luke Kempner. 6 6 As the group got to grips with the latest game – which shows famous sayings turned into cartoons for contestants to guess – Stephen found himself slipping up. Encouraging the gang to make a guess, the encouragement resulted in him accidentally spilling the answer himself. As the clip showed a man going into a coffee shop with rapidly increasing price tags until they burst through the ceiling, Stephen declared: "Literally, the prices have gone through the roof!" The contestants then stood in silence for a second as an embarrassed Stephen clocked what he had said. Jeremy Vine eventually broke the silence, pressing his buzzer and asking: "Sorry, what? Was that the answer?" Stephen then embarrassingly nodded and burst into fits of laughter alongside the cast and studio audience. "I have never in my life done that. In 10 years!" he admitted. Luke Kempner then joked: "I was just thinking 'this is a very tricky one, if it's not that!" before declaring Stephen had won himself £200. "We've got a bit of Catchphrase history here!" added Jeremy, poking fun and adding: "Roy Walker never did that." Stephen was soon crying with laughter before eventually regaining his composure and continuing with the game. Watch as three celebs fail to work out popular Catchphrase - but would you have got it on first try? Hopefully Stephen has learned his lesson - considering the show has already been given the go-ahead for an 11th series. If the three celebrities can 'say what they see' they could get the chance to win £50,000 for their chosen charity. ITV commissioner Gemma John-Lewis said: "We're delighted to announce a further series of the much loved family favourite, Celebrity Catchphrase. "The only show where you say what you see, the hugely popular series continues to win legions of fans and with Stephen's infectious and playful humour it's a firm favourite with our viewers." It is good news for the star after his other ITV programme, In For A Penny, was shelved after six years. 6 6 6
